Photo Challenge #113

Some photo challenges can be figured out by current Westporters, and those who lived here many years ago. The anchor by Ned Dimes Marina — installed in 1958 — was a great example, 3 weeks ago.

But you need to live here now — or have visited in the past 2 summers — to know last week’s image. John Videler’s shot showed the tile ramp at the “new” Levitt Pavilion, leading down to the lawn. If you’ve never seen it, be sure to stop by next summer — it’s a beauty! (Click here for the photo.)

Saugatuck Night Lights

Lynn U. Miller had dinner last night at Parker Mansion.

If you or I were there, we would have eaten, chatted, maybe glanced out the window of the former Mansion Clam House.

Not Lynn. The wonderfully talented photographer — who knows Westport better than just about anyone — snapped this shot:

Photo Challenge #111

It took Michael Calise just 1 minute to nail last week’s photo challenge. He knew that Lynn U. Miller’s image was part of the anchor that sits in a small grassy area a few yards from the Ned Dimes Marina at Compo Beach.

Of course, Michael is a Compo regular, in all kinds of weather. He should have known it!

Joining Michael in the winner’s circle are Kathie Bennewitz, Seth Schachter and Tom Wall.

NOTE: The base of the anchor contains a plaque: “In memory of John J. Benjamin, 1926-1958.” Does anyone know who he was, what he did (and why he died so young)?

Photo Challenge #110

Last week’s photo challenge was stunning. Lynn U. Miller’s image showed a door, set in a brick wall, with “Stop War” painted in strong black letters. It almost looked like a movie set. (Click here to see the photo.)

Readers’ guesses were stunning too. They ranged from the beach and railroad to the Staples principal’s office and Aleppo (!).

Even Jacques Voris — who knows everything about Westport — got it wrong.

In fact, only Chip Stephens knew that the door could be found at the side entrance of the old YMCA building on Main Street, near the old Bobby Q’s. Score one for the Planning & Zoning Commission (and Staples’ Class of 1973).

Photo Challenge #106

Sometimes the photo challenge is hidden in plain sight.

Last week’s photo showed a Corinthian pilaster with acanthus leaves, and a brick building — but it wasn’t the original library building. It wasn’t the old Y. It wasn’t one of our first schools, like Bedford Elementary (now Town Hall), Saugatuck Elementary (now elderly housing) or Bedford Junior High (now Saugatuck El).

No. It was the longtime Westport Bank & Trust — now repurposed as Patagonia.

Many of us pass by it, probably every day. But only Nina Skaya, Shirlee Gordon, Sarah Neilly, Ann Friedenberg and Linda Parker (who provided the architectural description I stole above) guessed correctly.

Photo Challenge #105

I said last week — on Christmas — that that day’s photo challenge was my holiday gift to my readers.

I wasn’t kidding.

A record 26 of you nailed my slam-dunk shot: the lancet windows at Christ & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

Only 3 readers guessed incorrectly. One said Assumption Church; another thought the photo showed the old Fairfield Furniture Store (now National Hall), and a 3rd said (I hope as a joke) Chartres Cathedral.

Love To Lee

Like many Westporters, Lynn U. Miller is a huge Lee Papageorge fan.

Yesterday — as the popular Oscar’s owner battles lung cancer — the noted Westport photographer stopped by his Main Street deli.

“Lee fills every room with his goodwill, kindness, generosity, wonderful smile, and genuine interest in and concern for everyone,” Lynn says.

She’s learned a lot from him. She wanted to show Lee and his family how she — and many others — felt about him.

She gathered 7 of Lee’s staff — Harry, Joyce, Cris, Javier, Joachim, Devan and Wally (Imis was off) — for a heartfelt, loving shot.

Bob Weingarten has driven up and down North Avenue for over 10 years. But until recently — when Aquarion started work on the water tanks opposite Staples High School — he’d never noticed them. To be fair, they’re hidden behind tall evergreens.

But Rebecca Wolin, Edward Bloch, Matt Murray, Carl Volckmann, Jane Sherman and Susan Huppi sure did. That’s how they nailed last week’s photo challenge.

Oh My 06880 — Photo Challenge #65

I thought last Sunday’s photo challenge image would draw plenty of ribald comments.

I thought wrong.

It sank like a stone. Only a few people hazarded guesses. Richard Stein, Nathalie Fonteyne and Wendy Cusick all knew it was a closeup of a sculpture in front of the Westport Arts Center, on Riverside Avenue. (Click here to see my flop of a photo challenge.)
