Be Careful Out There

There’s something about the Compo Shopping Center parking lot.

With scary regularity, cars plow into storefronts there.

This afternoon, it was Little Kitchen.

Fortunately, no one yet has been seriously hurt.

[UPDATE] Banking On Fitness

[UPDATE] Apparently — based on comments from readers below — this is not an actual Equinox gym. Rather, it’s a sales location, for people interested in signing up for the new Southport site. Thanks for setting us straight!

For years, Westporters have joked about the presence of banks on 3 of the 4 corners at the Post Road/Compo Road intersection. (The only reason it’s not 4 is Winslow Park.)

But Patriot Bank recently moved across the street, near Gold’s.

Moving into its old space — which before the bank was Sam Goody, and long before that, Franklin Simon — is Equinox.

This will be the 4th Connecticut location for the high-end, Manhattan-based gym. The others are in Southport, Darien and Greenwich.

So now that it’s just a few fast steps from SoulCycle, we can make jokes about how many fitness centers there are in Compo Acres Shopping Center.

Best Worst Parking Job. Ever

I have no idea what went on here, earlier this afternoon:

But it goes without saying:

It happened in the Compo Shopping Center parking lot.

Unfortunate New “06880” Feature: Today’s Car Plowing Into A Storefront

This happened just moments ago.

And yes, once again, it’s Compo Shopping Center.

Yesterday I said, “Be careful out there.”

Today I’ll add, “Be afraid. Be very afraid.”

Meanwhile, Right Across From Westport’s Greatest Parking Job…

… was this:

CVS parking lot

Referring to today’s earlier post about a cute little car at Trader Joe’s, alert “06880” photographer Steve Lunt calls this “Westport’s comical yin and yang parking.”

I call it “just another day in the CVS lot.”

Just When You Think You’ve Heard Every Parking Story Imaginable…

Alert “06880” reader Cindy Mindell-Wong writes:

Last week, I went back to my car in the notorious Compo Shopping Center parking lot. I found a note on my windshield:

I backed up leaving Little Kitchen, and may have grazed your car’s rear fender. I took a picture of your rear fender for my records. If you would like to discuss, please call me at [number]. Thank you.

This is the 1st new car I’ve owned since I started driving 36 years ago. My previous car, an old beater, was a magnet for parking lot hit-and-runs, not one of them accompanied by a note on the windshield. So I didn’t hold out much hope that I was dealing with an honest broker.

But boy, was I ever! This afternoon, I learned from the note-writer’s insurance company that a check for repairs was on its way.

The week-long process has been a welcome lesson in gratitude, trust, and the magic one person creates in the world with a simple act of integrity and honesty.

There’s a sweet footnote to the story: The woman who grazed Cindy’s car is Ashley Gayanilo, a social studies teacher at Staples High School — and she had Cindy’s daughter  in class last year. When Cindy sent a small gift of thanks — and asked if she could share this great story publicly on “06880” — Ashley replied:

I am humbled that you thought to acknowledge me. Character building is something we emphasize here at school, with Westport 2025. I’m happy to share this as an example. I’ve never been in print before!

Arrivederci, Villarina’s

Villarina’s is closing very soon. The popular Compo Shopping Center seller of homemade pasta, sauces, prepared dinners, fresh bread, cheese, party trays and specialty items is the latest victim of rising rents.

“It’s been there about 18 years. Sales were strong, and margins fine,” says Joe Filc, owner of the Danbury-based company.

“But the rent doubled. And as I understand it, the landlord wants to consolidate the vacant space next door.” That’s the site of the former AAA office.

Villarina’s has been in Westport for nearly 20 years. There are 7 other stores in Connecticut, New York and Austin, Texas — like this one, all individually operated. Filc says that unlike Westport, most own their property.

Much of his business comes from private labels, Filc says. Products are also available at select restaurants and food stores.

Meet The Most Important Person In Westport

Most over-entitled, self-absorbed and really obnoxious drivers take up 2 spaces with this type of parking maneuver:

Compo Shopping Center

This ass-hat took 3. No one could park in the spot behind him, either.

And no, it was not an empty lot. Alert “06880” reader Bart Shuldman took this photo in the middle of the day, when Compo Shopping Center was crowded with people.

People trying to find just 1 parking spot.

Playhouse Square: Parking Paralysis

For years, a pair of shopping centers — Compo (CVS, Gold’s, etc.), and Compo Acres across the street (Trader Joe’s, Silver’s, etc.) — reigned as Westport’s Worst Parking Lots. Parker Harding gave it a valiant effort, but no other place came close.

Suddenly, a challenger has emerged.

Over the past couple of weeks, Playhouse Square roared out of control. A combination of the holiday post office rush, the opening of the very popular Granola Bar, and snow that makes the narrow lanes even more congested, created — well, the perfect storm.

But don’t take my word for it. Here’s an email from an exasperated “06880” reader:

Today as I drove east on the Post Road, I noticed an enormous line of cars waiting to enter the Playhouse Square parking lot. I’ve made several visits to the post office in the past couple of weeks, and the situation has gotten progressively worse.

Cars stack up on the Post Road, waiting to enter Playhouse Square. It happens both westbound and eastbound.

There are not enough spaces, and when you park near the entrance, it is difficult to exit from your space due to the line of cars entering the lot. But today was the first time that I saw a line on the Post Road itself.

Once they enter the lot, drivers face a long -- often unmoving -- line of cars. This photo shows at least 7.

This is a traffic hazard for everyone, and the police should be concerned too. I thought about ways to avoid this problem but even if I found a parking spot somewhat nearby and walked, there are no snow-cleared sidewalks, nor is there a reasonably close crosswalk for the Post Road in the vicinity.

They can't move because the cars in front of them are waiting for spots. And there are no spots, because drivers can't back out because cars can't move!

I am not sure where to direct a complaint, so I hope our selectmen will take notice. How long does the post office lease last? This is not a good location for a post office. At least the old one was surrounded by many lots, and one could walk there easily.

Sometimes, 2 exit lanes work. Often, they don't.

Sometimes, 2 exit lanes work. Often, they don’t.

This location has only one access point, in a very busy area in the best of times. When you add snow to the holiday season, it is abysmal. Is it not possible for the postal service to open a satellite location like we used to have near exit 17?

There are 2 answers. One is to use the Green’s Farms post office — but that’s way out of the way, for anyone not in the neighborhood.

The other is to use the Westport Country Playhouse parking lot. At least for now, the gate is open to Playhouse Square. But leaving via the narrow Playhouse driveway is no picnic either — because there is no traffic light, and cars may be lined up in front of you waiting to enter, yes, Playhouse Square.

Meanwhile, there are more problems in the "upper" lot. These 2 drivers parked illegally by the left curb, creating even narrower driving lanes -- and more chaos.

Should I even mention the dozens of Dattco buses, spewing smoke as they stack up outside the tiny entrance to their yard across the street?

Nah.

And, past the post office, the sidewalk juts unnecessarily into the lot, near the flagpole. That funnels drivers into yet another bottleneck.

All That’s Missing Are Dorothy, Toto And Her Bike

In the span of about 8 seconds — just a few minutes ago — the skies  over Compo Shopping Center and Playhouse Square went from bright blue, to this:
