Westport Arts Scene: Drawing Out The Back Story

Westport’s arts scene is robust. And it has been, for over a century.

Right now the 2 major visual arts players are MoCA\CT, and the Artists Collective of Westport.

In this first of a 4-part series, “06880” culture correspondent Robin Moyer Chung explores how we got here.

Sources asked for anonymity, to describe sensitive issues.

The management of any institution is rife with roadblocks. And in an institution for the arts, financial realities can sometimes guide, or perhaps overwhelm, artistic missions.

Which brings us to the highly anticipated — and controversial — 2019 opening of MoCA Westport (now MoCA\CT).

As early as the 1920’s, Westport’s arts scene drew attention. In 1929 a newspaper called this “the home of the most distinctive arts community in the world.” (Um … Rome? Paris?)

James Earle Fraser was one of Westport’s earliest, and best known, artists. He designed the buffalo nickel, the “End of the Trail” sculpture of a Native American slumped over a tired horse, and the Theodore Roosevelt statue at the Museum of Natural History.

In 1934 the town of Westport provided $3,000 ($75,000 today), to kick off the Westport- Weston Arts Council (WWAC). The goal was to encourage and nurture the burgeoning arts scene, including writers, actors, fine artists, cartoonists, illustrators, musicians and more.

WWAC thrived for decades, in a variety of venues. In 1983 it found a physical home in what had been Greens Farms Elementary School. After years of declining birthrates, it and 2 other elementary schools were closed.

The WWAC leased the building from the town, for $1 a year. They changed their name to the Westport Arts Center (WAC). They rented the school’s classrooms at affordable rates, as studios for members.

The WAC also built an exhibition space for shows and performances, in the former gymnasium. In return, they were responsible for the building’s maintenance and upkeep.

From 1983 through 1998, this was the Westport Arts Center.

Gradually, the school population rebounded. In the late 1990s, town officials decided the building would revert back to a school.

They broke the WAC’s lease, leaving members without economical studio options or dedicated exhibition space.

After a years-long search the WAC landed in a brightly renovated Riverside Avenue gallery, not far from the Post Road. They sponsored exhibits from members and other artists around Connecticut, and offered arts education for youngsters.

The long, narrow space was not adequate, however. Offices were cramped, and it could not accommodate large pieces.

Around 2018, the executive director of the WAC and supporting board members decided they needed a larger, more suitable location. After examining the Baron’s property on Compo Road South, and Martha Stewart’s former television production facility, they chose the latter.

A press release gushed, “Thanks to 50 years of connecting an entire community around a love of the arts, it will open its new doors at 19 Newtown Turnpike under an evolved identity and mission.”

A town official added, “We are excited to see the Arts Center expand to meet the creative demands of our active, artistic town … the new campus will be a regional cultural destination, drawing audiences to Westport from all over Connecticut, Westchester County and New York City.”

WAC member sources for this article say they were not made aware of either the search, the new name or the new mission — which mentioned a local audience but not local artists.

Nor did it say that the building is primarily in Norwalk, with most taxes paid to that city.

Instead, members learned the news from the press release.

Roundup: Coleytown Actors, Staples Musicians, Blondinit Shabbat Dinners …

This being Westport, the middle school drama program is as robust as many high schools’ elsewhere.

And — this being Westport — when Coleytown Company plans a fundraiser, it’s Broadway quality.

Literally.

“Carrying the Banner: A Broadway Concert” — set for February 2 (7 p.m.), in support of the troupe’s March production of “Newsies” — features 4 original cast members from Disney’s “Newsies,” with a live professional band.

And one of the performers is from Westport.

Adam Kaplan — a 2008 Staples High grad, and former Players star — played the lead role of Jack Kelly, and was in the ensemble. He also starred in “A Bronx Tale,” the national tour of “Kinky Boots,” and “Show Boat” with the New York Philharmonic.

Another Westport/Broadway connection: The evening is produced by “John Proctor” and “Hunger Games” producer — and Coleytown Company director — Ben Frimmer.

He’s working with Broadway music director Mat Eisenstein (“Newsies,” “Frozen”), on this show. It features songs from “Newsies,” and other hits.

Proceeds will support costumes, sets, lighting, sound and more for Company’s spring production, along with future needs.

Speaking of the arts: Staples musicians made a record this year.

But it’s not the vinyl kind.

A record 69 students earned acceptance into the Connecticut Music Educators Association Western Region Music Festival.

That’s the highest number of students from any school in the region, encompassing more than 50 public and private high schools in Fairfield County.

Students audition through a rigorous process that includes prepared repertoire, scales and sight reading. Performers are selected for honors band, orchestra, choir and jazz ensembles.

Festival participants spend 2 days in intensive rehearsals with guest conductors. It culminates in a concert this weekend at Wilton High School.

Western Region Music Festival students can audition for the All-State Music Festival.

Speaking still of the arts: Among the Broadway and film stars performing last night in “The Pancake Club” — the first Script-in-Hand-reading of the 2026 series at the Westport Country Playhouse — were Tony Award recipient (and Weston resident) James Naughton, 4-time Academy Award nominee Marsha Mason, and 2-time Tony Award recipient Judith Ivey.

New York Polyphony — acclaimed by NPR for a “rich, natural sound that’s larger and more complex than the sum of its parts,” and by The New Yorker as “singers of superb musicianship and vocal allure” presents a “Sky of the Heart” concert at Christ & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (January 24, 5 p.m.).

The vocal chamber ensemble’s innovative programming spans Gregorian chant to contemporary commissions. Their focus on familiar and rare works of the 12-17th centuries brings early music to modern audiences.

Longtime Westport resident and former Westport Public Schools employee Marjorie Santella died last month in Siesta Key, Florida. She was 91.

Marge grew up in Westport, and attended local schools. She then returned as a beloved educator and administrative assistant.

Marge had 3 children with her husband Lou Santella, the well known owner of Saugatuck’s iconic Riverside Barber Shoop.

She proudly embraced his Italian heritage in many ways, from her collection of Pinocchios to memorable trips to Italy. Marge and Lou were active members of the Sons of Italy, and helped organize many Festival Italianos.

In 2003 the couple retired to Siesta Key. Marge was an avid theatergoer, and Rummikub player. Her family says, “She lived Florida life to the fullest, and brought everyone else along for the ride.”

Marge was predeceased by her husband Lou, and sons Michael and Louis, and sisters Nancy Soyak and Carol Less. She is survived by her son Mark; daughters-in-law Joanne, Emily and Rosé; grandchildren LJ, Adriana, Amy, Christopher, William and Alyse; great-grandchildren Liam and Millie Jean, and sister Loretta Hornyak.

A celebration of life will be held this spring, at Assumption Church.

Remembering Paul Kelleher

Former Westport superintendent of schools Paul Kelleher died December 24 at his Cape Cod home, after a long illness. He was 82.

The Worcester, Massachusetts native played football and basketball in high school. He received a scholarship to Harvard College, where he was earned a bachelor’s degree in English cum laude, and a Masters of Arts in Teaching English.

He was awarded a doctorate in education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Kelleher taught in Newton, Massachusetts, for 5 years before starting an administrative career. He was principal of Scarsdale (New York) High School, and superintendent of schools in Bedford, New York; Westport, and Lawrence, New York.

He later served as the Norine R. Murchison Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Education at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Paul Kelleher

During his superintendency in Westport, Kelleher received a Golden Shield Award from the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents, for courage in the field of education after “repeatedly confronting racist policies expressed in public fora.”

His obituary says, “Courage was perhaps Paul’s most formidable characteristic, always advocating for what was moral, just, and right in educational issues no matter what career risks were involved.”

Kelleher also devoted himself to improving staff development techniques, especially for administrators and educational leaders.

As professor emeritus he continued to work as a consultant in this field. He wroteseveral books, articles, and grants on educational leadership, resiliency, and implementing high standards and expectations.

Kelleher lived in East Orleans, Massachusetts for his final 2 decades. He enjoying boating, reading, writing, consulting, and offering courses at Snow Library’s Lifetime Learning Program and the Beacon Hill Seminars in Boston.

He was predeceased by his brothers Robert and Richard (Steve) Kelleher. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Peggy; their son Sean Joseph Murphy, and Paul’s children Timothy (Natalie), Christine (Steve) Kelleher Okun, and Melissa (Jim) Kelleher Lunchick; grandchildren Amanda Okun Quadrini, Ben Okun, Zach Okun, Kaity Kelleher Claeyssens and Augustus Lunchick, and great-grandchildren Charlotte Claeyssens, and Harper, Leo, and Isla Quadrini.

A remembrance reception will be held at the Barley Neck Inn in East Orleans on January 24 (12:30 p.m.).

Historic Marker Honors Revolutionary War Patriots

Jennings Trail is named in honor of Bessie Jennings. Her family settled in this area around 1650.

A beloved educator and authority on Westport’s past, she originated and led tours of local historic sites, for decades of elementary school students.

Conceived in 1974 as part of Westport’s plans to celebrate the Bicentennial, the Trail was initiated by the Westport Historical Society in collaboration with the Westport Young Woman’s League.

23 markers were installed throughout Westport. Jennings Trail is now under the stewardship of the Westport Historic District Commission.

Four additional markers are now being added. Historian Morley Boyd explores the story behind the most recent one.

At 1 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 1777, the Meeker household was wide awake.

Thirty-six-year-old Benjamin Meeker stared out the window at a scene that would have defied description. On the narrow, muddy road beside the Meekers’ 50-year-old Cross Highway residence, a heavily armed force from one of the most powerful nations on the planet came into view.

Suddenly there was shouting. The column of 1,850 soldiers – stretching into the darkness for nearly a mile – halted in front of Benjamin’s house.

The expedition was under the command of British Major General William Tryon. Three regiments had participated in the battles of Lexington and Concord. One had been at the Battle of Bunker Hill. These were seasoned professionals.

The “Meeker house” in the 1930s. After the Revolutionary War, Benjamin Meeker built the barn in back. It, and the house, still stand.

Benjamin probably knew that, around 5 p.m. the previous afternoon, a dozen British transports and 3 warships had arrived at the mouth of the Saugatuck River.

Because it had taken 6 hours to get the men and materiel off the ships and assembled, there was time for word to spread. Although the Americans had previously received intelligence that the British — desperate for food, tents and other supplies — likely intended to capture the Continental supply depot in Danbury, no one in those early hours could be completely sure of the enemy’s true plans.

The British had no idea how to get to Danbury, but they were guided by men who did. They also knew the loyalties of every resident in every house along the way.

Though we don’t know the scope of Benjamin Meeker’s efforts during the Revolutionary War, documents and testimony indicate he was a patriot. He would have particular concern about the force now standing outside his house.

After the order was given to halt, there was likely a knock at the door. When there was no response, someone probably started calling for Benjamin.

When that did not have the intended result, a British Regular was ordered to fire his weapon at the heavy plank door. The musket ball imbedded itself, but did not pierce it.

Benjamin faced a decision. If he continued to resist, his house would likely be set ablaze. Or perhaps the artillerymen would be ordered to open fire on the residence.

Either way, Benjamin knew that continued resistance could put his wife Abigail and their children – Anna, age 10; Sillivant, 8; Rachel, 3, and Benjamin Jr., less than 1 month – in mortal danger.

He opened the door, and was arrested. His older brother Daniel, a sergeant in the local militia, was arrested too.

Though Tryon had issued explicit, written orders forbidding plundering during the expedition, the house was ransacked. The family’s livestock were slaughtered. This kind of treatment (and worse) by British forces was typical near the coast in what is now Westport.

After Benjamin and Daniel were made prisoners, the column resumed its march. Arriving in Danbury the next day, things did not go as planned.

Although the original objective was to carry off everything possible from the Continental supply depot, Tryon’s men could not secure wagons to do so.

British forces landed at Compo Beach, marched to Danbury, headed back south and — after the Battle of Compo Hill — retreated to Long Island.

Then came word that American forces were rapidly closing in on the British position. Perhaps even worse was news that Benedict Arnold was among the 3 American generals  preparing to challenge the British, as they attempted to return to their ships at the mouth of the Saugatuck River.

Though Arnold was a pharmacist by trade with no formal military training, he was feared by the British for good reason: In the first 2 years of the war, he had proved to be a brilliant tactician, with astonishing endurance.

With time running out, the British decided to destroy the Continental supplies and get out of Danbury.

Presumably, Benjamin and Daniel Meeker — joined by over 50 other American prisoners — not only witnessed what happened at Danbury, but were dragged along on the harrowing retreat back to Compo.

Exhausted, out of ammunition and pinned down at Compo by American forces, only a do-or-die fixed bayonet charge got the British expedition back to the safety of their ships.

Although it’s impossible to imagine what the previous 48 hours must have been like for Benjamin, Daniel and the other American prisoners captured along the way, their situation soon got  much worse.

As Abigail Meeker watched her arrested husband and brother-in-law disappear into the night, she knew their chances of returning alive were slim.

It has been said that British-occupied New York was more of a gulag than a garrison. After the British filled the debtors’ prison with rebels, they turned the city’s non-Anglican churches into cages. When those exceeded capacity, prisoners were packed into New York’s massive, multi-story sugar warehouses. Finally, 16 decommissioned ships floating off Brooklyn were used to hold American prisoners.

It was a nightmare of brutality, starvation, disease and death. Over half of the estimated 18,000 American prisoners did not make it out alive.

Both Meeker brothers were thrown into a sugar house prison. They managed to survive for 18 months. before being released as part of a prisoner exchange.

The men returned to their families. Life resumed as best it could. When Daniel died 6 years later at age 45, his wife Abby interred him in the Lower Green’s Farms Burying Ground (now the corner of Greens Farms Road and the Sherwood Island Connector).

Benjamin supported the family of his younger brother Stephen, who had just been killed in action in Pennsylvania. He also supported his younger sister Molly, whose husband was badly wounded during the Battle of Stony Point. Benjamin died in 1817, at 75. When the ground thawed that spring, his wife buried him the Green’s Farms Church’s Upper Cemetery.

The Meeker homestead still stands at 188 Cross Highway, bearing silent witness to those who bravely fought for America’s independence.

“06880” Podcast: Erik Barbieri

Erik Barbieri is nearing the end of his first year as director of our Parks & Recreation Department.

It’s a key job — and he’s earned plenty of praise for his leadership. He’s visible. He’s proactive.

And he seems to be enjoying himself, and the town.

Roundup: MLK, Lyman, Christmas Trees …

A reminder: The upcoming Martin Luther King holiday includes 2 important local events.

The speaker for the 20th annual celebration is Jelani Cobb. The renowned journalist, scholar, and dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism will be in conversation this on Saturday (January 17, 1 p.m., Westport Library) with novelist, playwright, filmmaker — and Westport resident — Trey Ellis.

Cobb is a Peabody Award winner, Pulitzer Prize finalist, MSNow political analyst, and New Yorker staff writer. He has written books on Barack Obama and the hip hop aesthetic, in addition to editing other volumes and producing numerous documentaries.

The annual MLK celebration is a partnership between the Library, TEAM Westport, Westport Country Playhouse, Westport Museum for History & Culture, and the Westport/Weston Clergy Association. The event is free; click here to register.

Jelani Cobb

On Monday (January 19), the Westport Country Playhouse hosts a free screening of the Emmy-winning 2019 documentary “True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality.”

The film focuses on Stevenson’s life and career — particularly his indictment of the US criminal justice system for its role in codifying modern systemic racism — and tracks the intertwined histories of slavery, lynching, segregation and mass incarceration.

The film also documents the monumental opening of the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice, dedicated to the more than 4,400 lynching victims.

The screening is followed by a discussion with Ellis — one of the film’s executive producers — and TEAM Westport chair Harold Bailey Jr., along with questions from the audience. Click here for more information.

The New York Times ran a photo of Lyman, Ukraine yesterday.

There were 2 connections to Westport — and an ominous caption.

The image — illustrating a story about Russian President Putin’s silence in the wake of President Trump’s capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro — showed a Ukrainian artillery brigade near Lyman. The town, in the Donetsk region has been a sister city of Westport since shortly after the Russian invasion.

The caption in the online version said simply, “A Ukrainian soldier from the 63rd Mechanized Brigade firing toward a Russian target in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday.”

The print version was much more ominous. It added: “Capturing Lyman is currently a top Russian priority.”

The other connection: The shot was taken by Tyler Hicks. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Times photographer is a 1988 Staples High School graduate.

New Plan Could Slow Historic Home Teardowns

Among Westport’s many charms, historic homes are high on the list.

But — like the venerable trees that surround many — they’re disappearing at a rapid rate.

Residents express frustration with developers who demolish old houses, and at the Historic District Commission that cannot save them.

Part of the issue though, is regulatory. Town rules sometimes disincentivize developers from saving older structures.

Tonight (Monday, January 12, 6 p.m., Zoom), the Planning & Zoning Commission discusses a text amendment that could help keep those homes from the wrecking ball.

The language of Amendment #859 — submitted by Wendy Van Wie, on behalf of the Historic District Commission — is dry:

to delete the existing regulations and add a new … Historic Residential Structure (HRS), which clarifies and strengthens the intent to preserve and ensure continued use of Historic Structures explicitly tying incentives to Page 2 of 3 preservation outcomes; requires formal designation by the HDC before HRS application with criteria to be used by HDC; limits structures to pre-1940, with flexibility for later structures of exceptional integrity or significance; adds explicit definition of alteration for purposes of the section, as any exterior change, including enclosed historic feature; requires all exterior alterations reviewed, regardless of visibility; requires mandatory HDC review for changes impacting significant features or additions; clarifies process for ongoing review by HDC Administrator and Planning & Zoning for all future exterior changes; retains incentives but more explicitly ties them to demonstrated preservation necessity and scale compatibility; clarifies subdivision incentive, generally limited to pre1800 structures, with limited extensions for exceptional cases and prohibited in Local Historic Districts or after demolition; adds clear timelines (generally 18 months from notification) for required maintenance and repair; clarifies procedures, including 72-hour notice, repair plans, and restoration deadlines, adds explicit enforcement authority, including nullification of approvals for unauthorized alterations and permits greater flexibility in incentives provides by the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Yet, Van Wie says, there is a long and interesting history to the historical homes story.

In the early 2000s — during the hot housing market that preceded the 2008 financial crisis — there were many teardowns. The land beneath some older homes became more valuable empty, than with the house still on it.

An 1803 farmhouse, in fine condition, sat across Cross Highway from Van Wie’s house (which predated the farmhouse by another 80 years).

The farmhouse sat close to the road, on 2 acres. But in a AAA zone, which permits only 1 single family house on the lot, the farmhouse had to be demolished before a new large house could be built.

Van Wie wondered why the lot could not be split in 2 — preserving the farmhouse in front, and allowing the new home to built in back.

Demolition notices are a common sight in Westport. 

In 2007, the Planning & Zoning Commission adopted a special permit regulation. Recognizing that zoning can sometimes be an obstacle to historic preservation, it allowed relief from some requirements like setbacks and coverage.

In exchange, the owner grants the town a preservation easement, to perpetually protect the historic structure.

Over time, a few situations arose where the only practical way to save the historic house was by carving out a piece of land with a subdivision that would not ordinarily be permitted. The regulation was amended to allow such Historic Preservation Subdivisions.

But they applied to very few instances.

The 1803 Cross Highway farmhouse — now long gone — would not have been saved. But the Coleytown Mill house was.

It is scrunched between Coleytown Road — with almost not setback — and the Aspetuck River. No one would buy the property until it was subdivided. Then a new, large house was constructed in the field on the other side of the river. (Click here to read that 2015 “06880” story.)

But — frustrated by still not having enough tools to save historic houses when they came before the HDC for demolition — a few years ago the commission wrote the regulation that finally, tonight, comes before the P&Z.

The proposal has more rigorous historic preservation standards than the original regulation. But it potentially allows for more subdivisions, for the purpose of saving important historic structures.

Several preconditions must be met before a house is even considered for a historic preservation subdivision. It must have been built:

  • Before 1800
  • Between 1800 and 1940, but be of exceptional integrity and importance
  • Between 1800 and 1940, but among the last examples of its architectural style in its neighborhood.

If the HDC concludes that — under the above criteria — a house is historic, the P&Z must agree.

If the regulation is adopted, one beneficiary may be 125 Riverside Avenue.

That’s the 1756 home near the foot of Burr Road now owned by an LLC. Lucien Vita — principal architect of Vita Design Group, whose office and own home are in historic buildings, and who is working on the Riverside project — calls the new regulation “well considered, and a big improvement. We’re very supportive of the way it could preserve historic structures.”
