Photo Challenge #537

Nearly every Sunday, Andrew Colabella nails our Photo Challenge.

Not only that: He’s usually one of the first to respond with the correct answer too.

Not last week.

Of course, there’s a good reason. Andrew was the photographer who contributed the image.

It was a tough one. His black-and-white shot from inside Viva Zapata — of a door leading outside (click here to see) — stumped everyone except Brian Taylor, Sue Iseman, Sal Liccione and Matt McGrath.

Would it have stumped the champ, Andrew himself?

Nah.

There are several cupolas in Westport.

But only 1 person incorrectly identified last week’s Photo Challenge (guessing National Hall, which does not have one).

The correct answer was Kings Highway (click here to see). It’s familiar to generations of students who went to elementary school there (and — in its much earlier incarnation — the original Bedford Junior High).

And to countless drivers who pass by (and are stuck at the traffic light) on Post Road West.

A broken clock is right twice a day.

And 8 readers were right last week. They correctly identified the clock in our Photo Challenge as the one at Rive Bistro. (Click here to see.)

It’s been broken for years. But we don’t go to the Riverside Avenue restaurant to tell the time.

We go there to have a good time. The food, the vibe and the view are all great.

Photo Challenge #534

The tidal gates regulating the health of Sherwood Mill Pond have been in the news lately. They need repair.

That doesn’t stop people — nearby residents, and those from further away — from standing on the bridges over the gates, and enjoying the view.

To one side is the pond itself, with its wildlife, boats and Hummock Island. On the other side is Old Mill. Between it is the handsome, gated Compo Cove community.

For decades, the bridge closest to the parking lot has been a spot not just for contemplation, but fishing and (illegal) jumping.

For that reason, I thought plenty of people would recognize last week’s Photo Challenge: the image of a bass, affixed to the bridge. (Click here to see.)

Surprisingly, only 3 readers — Andrew Colabella, Jeff Jacobs and Beth Berkowitz — knew the answer.

Maybe everyone else who loves that spot is too busy gazing in the distance to look down at the railing.

It’s a tossup which is more popular in Westport: Mrs. London’s Bakery, or Champagne.

Both were part of last week’s Photo Challenge. Seth Schachter’s image showed the unique beverage vending machine, at the Church Lane café. (Click here to see.)

That combination made this one of our easiest Photo Challenges ever.

Robyn Levy, Linda Gates, Eileen Flug, Joelle Berger, Andrew Colabella, Marjolijn Baxendale, Molly Alger, Jeri Silverman, Claudia Sherwood, Cindy Zuckerbrod, Brian Schwartz, Joelle Malec, Lynn Untermeyer Miller, Lisa Hayes, Micheal Simso, Neil Cohn, Tom Felley, Wendy Schaefer, Seth Braunstein, Sal Liccione, Amy Saperstein, Micil Ryan, Karen Como, Paul Edward Cahill, Linda Vita Velez, Rachel Sara Halperin, Marina Levin-Berman, Todd Ehrlich, Tanaz Mody, John Lisée and Ivy Gosseen all correctly (and quickly) identified the spot.

We’ll drink to that!

But as slam-dunk as last week’s challenge was, here’s are 2 tough questions: Has anyone ever actually used that vending machine, to buy a bottle? Or seen anyone do it?

Who cares? It’s a cool thing to have in town.

Photo Challenge #532

Last week’s Photo Challenge showed a Christmas wreath, still hanging (on) on the top of a building.

It was the Westport Weston Family YMCA, as Fred Cantor, Andrew Colabella, Ed Simek, David Meth, Sal Liccione, Will Gibson, Richard Hyman, Jonathan McClure, Linda Vita Velez, Rew Travis, Jalna Jaeger, Naree W Viner, Amy Schneider and Tanaz Mody all knew.

None of them — or anyone else, for that matter — knew why it was still there, 67 days after Christmas.

No matter. It was gone a couple of days later.

Coincidence? “06880”-related? Who knows.

Just call it another Christmas miracle.

It will be a miracle, meanwhile, if no one gets today’s Photo Challenge. It’s easy — we’ll drink to that!

Photo Challenge #531

Most Photo Challenges show a Westport scene that’s been here a while.

That’s why it’s a “challenge.” The goal is to be difficult — not impossible.

But every once in a while, you get a curveball.

Last week’s Photo Challenge showed a sign (“A Life Without Anything Good is Bad”) inside a place that serves food. (The hint: a napkin dispenser on a table. Click here to see.)

I figured since the Van Leeuwen ice cream shop opened to large crowds on Church Street last month, it would be familiar to many “06880” readers.

Then again, it’s still winter. We’re not exactly in mid-ice cream season.

Still, 3 readers — Andrew Colabella, Rachel Sara Halperin and Joelle Malec — nailed the challenge.

If I ran this a few months from now, many more would have.

Speaking of winter: It’s been 67 days since Christmas. We’re closer to May Day than to that holiday.

The Westport Library is one of the most popular spots in town.

And the Library Café is one of the most popular spots inside that very versatile building.

So it was no surprise that nearly 2 dozen readers quickly guessed last week’s Photo Challenge.

Pam Docters’ image showed a once-well-used card catalog, now repurposed to hold utensils, condiments and sugar, for patrons sandwich eaters and coffee  drinkers.

The Green’s Farms post office is one of Westport’s hidden gems.

Still, when I ran a Photo Challenge of a holiday display inside its lobby 2 months ago, over 2 dozen readers knew exactly where it was.

They sure didn’t look outside.

Only one reader — Fred Cantor — correctly identified last week’s Challenge. Scott Smith’s photo showed an antique lamppost and modern cell tower, just past the post office.

It’s opposite the only house, just before the mulching/composting operation tucked between the railroad tracks and I-95. (Click here to see.)

I guess that lamppost and cell tower are even more hidden than the hidden gem that is the Green’s Farms post office.

The Black Duck is a simple place.

And the answers to last week’s Photo Challenge were simple.

“The Duck!” many readers said. A few shortened it to just “Duck.”

They were right. Mary Lou Roels’ image of a sign that said “A good drinking place is a good place to be” — a direct quote from that famed drinker, Benjamin Franklin — hangs oveer the bar. (Click here to see.)
