Oh My 06880 — Photo Challenge #60

Last week’s photo challenge proved surprisingly difficult.

We’ve all passed the large wooden sign at Sconset Square on Myrtle Avenue — a jillion times.

But the stylized ships at the top — well, most of us never notice them.

Patricia Blaufuss, Julia Schorr and Wendy Cusick do. They’re the only 3 alert “06880” readers who nailed last week’s photo challenge. (Good guess, but wrong: Mike Calise’s Settlers & Traders real estate company.)

With all the kids in town — and all the brouhaha over the Westport YMCA’s move to Mahackeno — I thought last week’s photo challenge would be a snap.

But what do I know?

Johanna Rossi’s photo of a faux-old sign at Camp Mahackeno, not far from the Bedford Family Center — “Notice! Cursing & swearing will be cause for removal” — stumped just about everyone.

Despite a near-record 47 comments, it took more than 10 hours for Bobbie Herman to come up with the correct answer. Dorothy Abrams followed 12 minutes later. (Click here to see the photo, and read the many wrong guesses.)

Once again, “06880” readers prove there is no nook or cranny of Westport they don’t recognize.

Last week’s photo challenge — a stone lion — took us to the furthest corner of town. As 8 of you knew, it’s 1 of 2 statues on Beachside Avenue, a few feet from the Southport line. They stand at the driveway entrance to Mortimer and Mimi Levitt’s home. (To see the photo and all the guesses, click here.)

Oh My 06880 — Photo Challenge #55

Last week’s photo challenge was not much of one.

From the moment the image of a waterfall was posted, correct answers cascaded in.

Susan Shuldman, Diane Silfen, Rich Stein, Tom Ryan, Marcella Lozyniak, Hallie Stevens, Ann Moore, Gerald Romano, Bruce Kent, James Weisz, Virginia Clark, Robert Swift, Gary Singer, Jill Turner Odice, Eva Toft, Tor Sporre, Morley Boyd, LuAnn Giunta, Tom Wall, Claire Ford and Jill Nash (of course) von Schmidt all knew it was the dam at Nash’s Pond, visible from Kings Highway North.

Also, apparently, from the Great American Toy Company.

“Anyone ever shopping for a playground set there would know that,” sniffed Seth Schachter.

Well, I never have. So excuse me.

It don’t take no Einstein to figure out this is the Taylortown Salt Marsh.

But where is it located? (No Googling!)

Oh My 06880 — Photo Challenge #51

Last week’s photo challenge had everyone thinking one direction — downtown — but it was another place entirely.

The image of woods, framed in a window, reminded people of a view of Winslow Park, the Senior Center or library.

Nope. It was the Mahackeno campus, taken from the Westport YMCA stairs heading to the fitness center and pool. (So, in a way, it was connected to downtown — the Y used to be there.)

Oh My 06880 — Photo Challenge #28

Hmmmm….where did I see that guy before?

Andrea Berkley knew the answer to last week’s photo challenge: Custom Upholstery, on Riverside Avenue.

Okay, she admitted — her 9-year-old son Alex got it. He passes by every day on his way to school.

But most of us are on Riverside Avenue a lot too. We should take a page from Alex’s book, and really observe the Westport around us. (Click here to see last week’s photo challenge, and read all the other wild guesses.)
