Roundup: Media & The Election, Fashionably Westport, Rach’s Hope …

The state of democracy and the media’s impact on it, globally and locally — plus AI, TikTok, fact checkers and more — were debated for nearly 2 hours yesterday.

A capacity crowd filled the Westport Library, to hear the Y’s Men of Westport and Weston-sponsored discussion.

Senator Richard Blumenthal; television journalists Alisyn Camerota and Dave Briggs of Westport, and John Berman (all now or formerly with CNN), along with “06880”‘s own Dan Woog answered questions from moderator John Brandt.

Staples High School Inklings advisors Mary Elizabeth Fulco and Joseph Del Gobbo, with editors Nina Bowens and Lily Hultgren, added student perspectives.

Click below to view the full event. It was fascinating.

Then again, I’m a biased media participant.

Last year, Rach’s Hope Walk the Extra Mile raised more than $20,000. The funds helped the non-profit that supports families with critically ill children in the ICU with an additional 100 nights of hotel stays, so parents can rest and recharge while staying close to their kids.

Rach’s Hope — which honors Rachel Doran, the Staples High School graduate and rising Cornell University senior, who died after developin a rare reaction to common medications — is getting ready for their 6th annual Rach’s Hope PJ Gala.

(Rachel was a talented Staples Players costume designer, and founded a pajama company.)

The date is Saturday, March 29 (7 to 11 p.m., FTC, Fairfield).

Festivities include an open bar with Tito’s cocktails, beer, wine and prosecco; heavy appetizers and desserts by AMG Catering; live music kicked off by Westport’s own Michael Cantor and Frog Salon, plus Rach’s Hope’s signature band, Ellis Island — and live and silent auctions too.

Tickets are on sale now (with early bird pricing through January 31). Click here to purchase, and for more information.

But your images can be even better if you know what you’re doing.

She’ll do it at the perfect place: Sherwood Island State Park.

Attendees should meet at the main pavilion. There is an optional donation of $10 per family, to support the Friends of Sherwood Island garden team.

You can’t celebrate Valentine’s Day with Elvis. The “Love Me Tender” dude is booked. (And dead.)

But you can enjoy the day after with him.

“Love is in the Air” — which calls itself “Connecticut’s #1 Elvis Show” — comes to VFW Post 399 on February 15 (6:30 p.m.).

The Riverside Avenue club invites you to “celebrate the love of your life with the love songs of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

Tickets ($35 member, $40 non-member) include a buffet.  Click here to purchase. Questions? Call 302-312-3774. (Hat tip: Andrew Colabella)

Elvis was in the (VFW) building last month, with radio personality Matt Zako and VFW Auxiliary vice president Patty Kondub.

Speaking of music: The New York Times says, “Ringo Starr maintains his perpetual optimism in ‘Look Up,’ the title track of his new, Nashville-centered album.

“Written by T Bone Burnett and Daniel Tashian, the song posits, ‘There’s a light that shines in the darkest days,’ bolstered by richly twangy guitars and an unmistakable Ringo backbeat.”

What makes this “06880”-worthy is that Tashian is the son of Barry and Holly Tashian. The Staples High School Class of 1963 graduates have made their home in Nashville for many years, where they wrote and recorded.

Barry also played with Emmy Lou Harris and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Before that, he played guitar and sang lead vocals with the Remains.

The Boston-based band were called “how you told a stranger about rock ‘n’ roll” (by Jon Landau), along with — had they not broken up — a contender with the Rolling Stones for the title of “World’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band.”

In 1966 — after appearing on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “Hullabaloo” — they opened for the Beatles, on their final US tour.

Nearly 60 years later, Barry’s son and Ringo have kept the Remains/Beatles connection alive.

If you were like most Westporters (including me), you spent yesterday indoor.

There were football games to watch, cups of cocoa to drink, cold to stay out of.

If you were this woman named Tanya, however, you headed to Compo Beach, took off most of your clothes, and walked right into the water.

(Photo/Patricia Auber)

Patricia Auber — who was there, though presumably dressed a bit more warmly — reports that Tanya stayed in, up to her neck, for at least 5 minutes.

Hopefully, hot cocoa was waiting at home.

And finally … Happy Stephen Foster Memorial Day!

Today commemorates the death of “the father of American music.” Foster died on this day in 1864. He was just 37 years old — perhaps by his own hand — but had already written more than 200 songs.

Among them:

Roundup: Dunville’s, Fashionably Westport, AWARE …

When Dunville’s closed last month, rumors flew around town.

Some said: It’s gone forever!

Others countered: No! It’s been bought by Little Pub!

No one seemed to know what was happening with the iconic 42-year-old Saugatuck restaurant/bar.

And no one who would know was speaking publicly.

Yesterday, Doug Grabe — who owns the 5 Little Pubs, in Fairfield, Wilton, Greenwich, Stratford and Old Saybrook — emailed “06880.” He said: “Dunville’s is not going anywhere. And neither is beloved owner Steve Carpentieri.

“He and I recently decided to work together to return Dunville’s to a full-service, 7-day-a-week lunch and dinner restaurant. We had to shut down for a bit to do that.

“Dunville’s is now back open every day from 4 to 11 p.m. for dinner service, takeout and delivery.

“Lunch service should start around April 1, with Dunville’s brunch returning shortly afterwards.

“We’re still sorting out the various systems, interfaces and platforms. But the current menu is up. Click here.

“There’s still lots to do. But we’re back open, and we hope to see everyone at Dunville’s 42nd annual St Patrick’s Day Celebration on Sunday March 17.”

Generations of Westporters can breathe a sigh of relief.

And look forward to another 4 decades of food, drinks and friendly vibe on Saugatuck Avenue.

In a town filled with high-profile, high-impact organizations working hard to make the world a better place, Westporters should be aware of AWARE.

Its name is not as well known as some others. But the group — whose acronym stands for Assisting Women through Action, Resources and Education — quietly and efficiently gets stuff done.

And they do it in a unique way.

Each year, AWARE selects a women’s cause — female veterans, say, or breast cancer, literacy, or refugees and immigrants,

Then they partner with a charity working in that area. Through a fundraiser, hands-on activity and educational event, AWARE shines a light on specific women’s issue, all year long.

This year’s partner is Inspirica. The Stamford-based non-profit strives to end homelessness and housing insecurity by helping individuals and families achieve stability through support services, and affordable housing.

A fundraiser and awareness raiser on Saturday, March 23 (3 to 4 p.m.) includes a quick walk. It starts at Green & Tonic (all participants get a free smoothie), then goes up Main Street to Parker Harding Plaza, for a stroll along the Saugatuck River. It ends at the Westport Library.

The walk is organized by AWARE’s 3 high school clubs: Staples, Weston and Ridgefield.

Donations are requested, but not mandatory. Click here for details, and to donate.

Roundup: Long Lots Timeline, Antisemitism Forum, SXSW …

The Long Lots building project is moving ahead.

The review for the appropriation for design documents for the new elementary and Stepping Stones Preschool, including the site, will be heard by the Board of Finance tomorrow (Wednesday, February 7).

The Representative Town Meeting will hold a special meeting next Tuesday (February 13).

Both meetings begin at 7:30 p.m., in the Town Hall auditorium.

First Selectwoman Jen Tooker says that the next phase of the project includes “requesting appropriations for needed studies and plans as well as the ability to perform the appropriate due diligence on critical issues such as impact studies on neighboring properties, drainage, parking, wetlands, etc.

“All land use and funding bodies will have the opportunity to opine on their given expertise and authority in public meetings throughout each stage.

“Although time is of the essence in order for construction of the new school to begin before the end of 2024, proper process and public participation will not be compromised. Most importantly, we need to ensure the Long Lots School and Stepping Stones School community is heard, and that the goal of a safe, secure environment for our children to learn and grow is realized.”

“06880” loves every creature we feature on “Westport … Naturally.”

But we have a special place in our heart for barred owls. Even AI could not come up with something this cool.

“06880” Podcast: Dave Briggs

In a town filled with interesting people, Dave Briggs still stands out.

He’s a longtime national broadcaster with CNN, NBC Sports, Fox News and Turner Sports. He still does media work, but has branched out into business – with Cann Social Tonic, a drink micro-dosed with THC and CBD. He’s fully immersed in town activities, as (among other things) a Westport Library board member and Fashionably Westport MC.

Our wide-ranging chat last week at the Library ranged from national politics and the media to kids (he has 3), his varied career, and — notably — his passion for all things Westport.

Unsung Heroes #277

Westport’s calendar is packed with fundraising events.

Each week, there are galas to choose from. They feature food, drinks, silent and live auctions, and entertainment.

Westporters support them all generously. We pay good money, for great causes.

But these events don’t just happen. They take a ton of behind-the-scenes work, by corps of hard-working volunteers. Committed to the non-profits they serve, they spend countless hours making sure everyone has a good time (and buys tickets, bids on items, etc.).

Some are singled out for thanks. Many are not. Of course, that’s not why they help. They just want to make our community a better place for all.

Last Saturday’s “Fashionably Westport” was one of those very important benefits. Organized by the Westport Downtown Association, to raise funds for Homes with Hope — our wonderful supportive housing and food pantry organization — the 2-day event includes shopping and store promotions.

The centerpiece was a fashion show at the Westport Library. Over 60 models showcased apparel from 21 local businesses. Hair and makeup was done by 6 salons. Restaurants and spirit shops provided food and drink.

On the runway at Fashionably Westport. (Photo/Dan Woog)

It was an enormous undertaking, involving months of preparation and attention to detail.

Sometimes things go wrong. Saturday’s MC rubbed some attendees the wrong way. She mocked some merchants, made inappropriate “jokes,” and sent at least a dozen people to early exits.

Yet none of that detracts from the real heroes of the event: the men and women who worked tirelessly to put on a great fashion show (and more); the many local businesses who donated goods and time, and the Westport Downtown Association and Homes with Hope, who partnered for a crucial cause in a creative, fun (and fundraising) way.

“06880” salutes all the individuals, businesses and organizations that make “Fashionably Westport” — and so many other events like it — so successful. You are our Unsung Heroes of the week.

(Do you know an Unsung Hero? Let us know: 06880blog@gmail.com.)

Coming May 10: the 17th annual “Taste of Westport.” The Inn at Longshore event benefits CLASP Homes.

Roundup: Dream Event, Women’s History, Fashionably Westport …

Westporters have plenty of fundraising galas to choose from.

All are worthy. Nearly all are well-organized, and fun.

But for inspiration and impact, few compare with A Better Chance of Westport’s Dream Event.

ABC — the program that provides both a home and an educational opportunity for up to 8 outstanding and academically-gifted young men of color each year — celebrates its 20th year on April 1 (7 p.m., Pinstripes at the SoNo Collection, Norwalk).

There are cocktails, dinner, entertainment, a silent auction — all important elements at many fundraisers — plus bowling at Pinstripes’ 12 lanes.

But what sets the Dream Event apart from many other galas are the speeches. Hearing about A Better Chance’s life-changing power — directly from those involved — is well worth the ticket price.

Speaking of the Library:

First they announced that the Smithereens and Marshall Crenshaw would headline the Friday night (March 31) show at VersoFest 2023.

Now comes news of the opening act, on Thursday, March 30: Sunflower Bean.

The Brooklyn-based band kicks off the 4-day festival at the state-of-the-art Verso Studios’ Trefz Forum. Hysterica does the DJ honors.

Sunflower Bean singer-songwriter Julia Cumming returns to her home base of Fairfield County, hot off the band’s headlining presence at South by Southwest 2023.

The band’s “Headful of Sugar” was named #41 on Rolling Stone’s “100 Best Albums of 2022.”

Sunflower Bean formed in 2013. The next year, Jon Pareles of The New York Times described their sound as “… what might have happened if psychedelia had emerged after punk and the Police rather than before.”

The band has toured extensively with artists like Beck, Cage the Elephant, Interpol, Courtney Barnett, The Pixies, The Kills, DIIV, Courtney Barnett and Wolf Alice.

Tickets for the show are $25; click here.

A new mixed-use development — with 136 apartments, more than 6,800 square feet of retail space, and a pool, dog run  and walking trails — has been okayed for the Westport border.

“Nancy on Norwalk” reports today that the Norwalk Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously approved plans for the proposal on Renzulli Road. It currently runs from Kings Highway South in Westport — between Rivard Crescent and Strathmore Lane — to Westport Avenue (Route 1) in Norwalk. Kings Highway South marks the Westport/Norwalk border.

Renzulli Road begins on the Westport/Norwalk border.

Renzulli Road would now become a cul-de-sac, with no outlet onto Westport Avenue.

The principal engineer for the project promises a “significant amount of landscaping” including trees around parking areas and the back property as a buffer with neighbors, and plantings throughout. The site will also include feature an improved storm water management system.

The site now houses a dry cleaner, and a vacant building that was once a liquor store.

The next step: approval from the Connecticut Department of Transportation. Westport Avenue is a state road. (Click here for the full story. Hat tip: Sal Liccione)

Staples High School is justly proud of its Players theater troupe and Orphenians, the elite a cappella singing group. Both have been around since the 1950s.

But Soundings — the award-winning literary magazine — is a decade older.

Founded in 1947, it’s now an annual print and digital magazine showcasing student submissions ranging from prose, poetry and short stories to 2D, 3D and digital art.

But a few years ago, Board of Education funding was cut. Soundings now relies on a GoFundMe appeal. The goal is just $1,000 — but ever dollar helps. Click here for more information, and to contribute.

(Need more incentive? Click here to browse the archives.)

Meanwhile, Soundings seeks submissions from students. This year’s theme: “The world is your playground.”

Short stories, essays, visual media and more (and questions) can be sent to Soundings@students.westportps.org. To be eligible for a cash prize, include a $5 submission fee (not mandatory).
