Playhouse Square: Parking Paralysis

For years, a pair of shopping centers — Compo (CVS, Gold’s, etc.), and Compo Acres across the street (Trader Joe’s, Silver’s, etc.) — reigned as Westport’s Worst Parking Lots. Parker Harding gave it a valiant effort, but no other place came close.

Suddenly, a challenger has emerged.

Over the past couple of weeks, Playhouse Square roared out of control. A combination of the holiday post office rush, the opening of the very popular Granola Bar, and snow that makes the narrow lanes even more congested, created — well, the perfect storm.

But don’t take my word for it. Here’s an email from an exasperated “06880” reader:

Today as I drove east on the Post Road, I noticed an enormous line of cars waiting to enter the Playhouse Square parking lot. I’ve made several visits to the post office in the past couple of weeks, and the situation has gotten progressively worse.

Cars stack up on the Post Road, waiting to enter Playhouse Square. It happens both westbound and eastbound.

There are not enough spaces, and when you park near the entrance, it is difficult to exit from your space due to the line of cars entering the lot. But today was the first time that I saw a line on the Post Road itself.

Once they enter the lot, drivers face a long -- often unmoving -- line of cars. This photo shows at least 7.

This is a traffic hazard for everyone, and the police should be concerned too. I thought about ways to avoid this problem but even if I found a parking spot somewhat nearby and walked, there are no snow-cleared sidewalks, nor is there a reasonably close crosswalk for the Post Road in the vicinity.

They can't move because the cars in front of them are waiting for spots. And there are no spots, because drivers can't back out because cars can't move!

I am not sure where to direct a complaint, so I hope our selectmen will take notice. How long does the post office lease last? This is not a good location for a post office. At least the old one was surrounded by many lots, and one could walk there easily.

Sometimes, 2 exit lanes work. Often, they don't.

This location has only one access point, in a very busy area in the best of times. When you add snow to the holiday season, it is abysmal. Is it not possible for the postal service to open a satellite location like we used to have near exit 17?

There are 2 answers. One is to use the Green’s Farms post office — but that’s way out of the way, for anyone not in the neighborhood.

The other is to use the Westport Country Playhouse parking lot. At least for now, the gate is open to Playhouse Square. But leaving via the narrow Playhouse driveway is no picnic either — because there is no traffic light, and cars may be lined up in front of you waiting to enter, yes, Playhouse Square.

Meanwhile, there are more problems in the "upper" lot. These 2 drivers parked illegally by the left curb, creating even narrower driving lanes -- and more chaos.

Should I even mention the dozens of Dattco buses, spewing smoke as they stack up outside the tiny entrance to their yard across the street?

Nah.

And, past the post office, the sidewalk juts unnecessarily into the lot, near the flagpole. That funnels drivers into yet another bottleneck.

Parking, Part 2

This morning, I posted photos of a pair of overnight delivery service truck drivers — one UPS, one FedEx — making their own rules in the Fresh Market parking lot.

Here’s one of a regular BMW driver doing the same:

Parking

But — to give him or her the benefit of the doubt — this was in the upper lot at Compo Acres, behind Trader Joe’s. It’s usually empty.

So, “06880” readers, weigh in:

  • Is it okay to park this way if there are few other cars around?
  • Or is it still the epitome of selfishness to hog extra spaces — because if everyone did it, then where would we be?

Splash!

At last — a photo of the Compo Acres Shopping Center that does not involve a crazy driver.

Just a couple of cars in this afternoon’s sudden downpour.

Rainy day

Thankfully, no one was getting out of the white car when Craig Patton took this photo.

We hope.

Compo Acres Paint Palette — Part 2

If you’re holding your breath waiting for the return of the Compo Acres paint palette — first reported in Wednesday’s “06880” — you can exhale.

Unfortunately.

Alert “06880” reader Suzanne Sherman Propp tracked down the property owner (Equity One in New York City), and the man responsible for the Westport shopping center property (Glenn Wilson, Northeast Regional Manager).

She wrote:

Hi! My name is Suzanne Sherman Propp and I’ve lived in Westport since 1966. I’ve always been a huge fan of the light blue Compo Acres Sign in the shape of a paint palette that was leaning up against the tree at the corner of the Post Road and Compo Road North. Can you tell me what happened to it?

His one-sentence reply:

We had that replaced and I believe it was thrown out.

Equity One’s tagline is “improving retail real estate in urban communities.”

Suburban communities — not so much.

The Compo Acres paint palette is gone...

...but we do have this huge granite slab not far away.

Compo Acres Paint Palette

The other day, alert “06880” reader Suzanne Sherman Propp noticed something.

Or, more accurately, she noticed something missing.

It was the “paint palette” sign at Compo Acres Shopping Center.

For decades it’s stood at the very-tough-to-maneuver entrance, on the corner of Post Road and South Compo.

I would say “next to Patriot Bank,” but no one in the history of finance has ever been there. So I’ll say “next to where Sam Goody’s used to be,” and hope you get the reference.

The “paint palette” sign was straight out of the 1950s, when the shopping center was built (obviously, from the parking situation). The sign was there when folks ate at Morris’s luncheonette (closed — like every other “luncheonette” in the world), bought toys at Carousel (burned to the ground), and shopped at Franklin Simon (gone to that great retail space in the sky).

Now the sign has disappeared too.

That would be the end of this blog post, except I needed a photo of it. I looked in all the usual places (Google Images, Facebook), and then the unusual (the website of the property owner).

Without a shot of the sign, I couldn’t run this story.

Suzanne’s friend Anne Hardy came to the rescue. She wracked her brain, thought of Google Maps Street View — and, voilà!

Paint palette

No, it’s not the greatest photo in the world.

But after sitting there for more than half a century, this may be the only evidence of the “paint palette” sign to be found, online or off.

A new granite sign stands at the entrance to Compo Acres Shopping Center, next to Trader Joe’s:

Now all we need are new sight lines. New traffic patterns.

And new drivers.

Stupid Parking Tricks (Bike Division)

Alert “06880” reader Terry Brannigan snapped this photo today at Compo Acres Shopping Center:

Bike

No word on whether the Very Entitled bike owner exited the parking lot the right way, or if he followed the new trend of zipping directly over the curb, and into Post Road traffic.

If You Have A Large Car And Can’t Parallel Park…

…you shouldn’t try to fit into a spot near Robeks.

Or at least you could try a little harder.

Stupid Driving Tricks

There must be a story behind how the driver of this Range Rover ignored the arrows, sailed past a parking lot full of cars parked the opposite direction in front of Silver’s, Robeks and other stores — on both sides of the Compo Acres lane — before blithely pulling in this way.

There must be a story — but I don’t want to hear it.
