Another Opening, A Hell Of A Show

Great food stories just follow Lloyd Allen around.

Westporters know him as the owner of the beloved Double L Farm Stand. But last night — in the midst of the blizzard — he found himself at the Westport Inn.

Starving.

Along with the rest of the packed-to-the-rafters guests.

Fortunately, the inn’s brand-new Red Hen restaurant — run by Hunter King, of the very popular King’s Kitchen at Southport Beach — was open.

Well, not exactly.

It was their very 1st day in business. They’d planned a nice, soft  opening.

It didn’t happen.

As the hordes descended, things got crazy.

Fortunately, a few diners jumped in to help.

People named Jed and Lexi cooked. Another guy — Christian — prepped food, waited tables and did everything else except slaughter a cow.

Luca Kupper — of Double L fame — chopped vegetables.

Ethan Lindenbaum and his mom Jamie walked to Stop & Shop to get more food.

And Lloyd himself washed dishes.

Breakfast this morning was even wilder.

Tonight, Lloyd says, they’re doing Mardi Gras: crawfish gumbo, Texas buffalo burger sliders with mozzarella, Cajun tacos and po’ boys.

Kinda makes you want to be stranded for a while, doesn’t it?

Finding Nemo: Kids, Animals And Snowed-In Cars Edition

Whatever got Westporters outside today — bright sunshine, brisk wind, the need to walk dogs or shovel walks — we brought our cameras.

Here’s a snapshot of our town, the day after the Blizzard of 2013 blew in.

Gatsby Gala A No-Go

The Westport Library’s “Great Gatsby Party” scheduled for tonight has been postponed to the spring. “Too many complications due to the snow,” organizers say.

Looks like Westporters will be mixing their own gin martinis tonight.

And While You’re At It, Shovel Those Hydrants!

Alert “06880” reader Pippa  Bell Ader says:

Fire hydrant shoveled outI shoveled out my fire hydrant.

I called the Fire Department. They appreciate any help in clearing hydrants of snow, or even just making a path to the hydrants. They don’t have the manpower to get to all of them.

But don’t throw the snow back onto the street!

Now is a perfect time to do this, with no cars on the road.

How We’re Finding Nemo

“06880” readers shared these photos this morning.

Now we’re looking for good action shots of kids, old folks — even dogs — playing or romping. Send ’em to: dwoog@optonline.net.

Enjoy! Stay warm! Have fun!

Mike The Mailman Does Deliver

Amazingly, this is my 2nd “inspirational mailman” story in 2 days.

Yesterday I highlighted Westport’s George “Nooky” Powers.

Today it’s Mike the Mailman. You may not have heard of him, because he works at Penn State University.

Mike the Mailman… (Photo courtesy of CBS News)

Then again, you may have heard of him. If, that is, you were like Hedi Lieberman: snowed in, and watching “CBS Evening News.”

Mike Kerr is a much-loved postal worker in State College. He’s worked there for 38 years.

He was grand marshal of the Homecoming parade. One woman buys stamps when she doesn’t need them, just to see Mike.

So what does 16801 have to do with 06880?

Mike Aitkenhead.

...and Mike the Teacher.

…and Mike the Teacher.

“You really have no idea who you’re going to influence and when you’re going to influence them,” says Mike, who CBS’ Steve Hartman identified as “a high school teacher in Connecticut,” but who we know as both an outstanding Staples High School educator and the Wakeman Town Farm steward.

But let CBS Evening News take it from there:

(Mike Aitkenhead) got his master’s at Penn State, and although he didn’t know Mike the Mailman very well, years later, when he was awarded teacher of the year in his district, guess who he thanked for his success.

“The one person I’m always going to remember and probably taught me the most about life was actually Mike the Mailman,” Michael said in his speech.

“It was honestly his example that kind of taught me it’s not what you do in life, but it’s how you do it,” Michael says.

Now that’s something to write home about.

Mark Mathias: Part Of The 1%

Westport Board of Education member/Mini Maker Faire co-founder/all-around good guy Mark Mathias does not consider himself part of the 1%.

But LinkedIn does.

Mark Mathias

The site just welcomed its 200 millionth member. So, Mark notes, he shares his distinction with 2 million others.

“I have no idea why I would be in this 1% designation,” he says.

But he does know one thing: “I’m going to shovel 100% of the snow at my house this weekend.”

Party On With Morris Jesup!

Although the Westport Library is closing at noon today — and tomorrow’s “Designers Under 30” event has been postponed — the gala “Great Gatsby Party” is on. Doors — hopefully all shoveled out — open at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

Morris Jesup — the library founder — is spending today getting his Roaring ’20s outfit ready. Here’s a start:

In other storm-related news, feel free to email interesting photos to “06880.” That will give you something to do, until the power goes out.

One more thought: Since when did blizzards start getting names? And if you had every name in the world to pick from, would you choose “Nemo”?
