There’s no such thing as a free lunch.

But there are 5 free rides for anyone who downloads the Wheels2U app for the first time.

Those rides can be used to deliver you to the train station platform. Or to head downtown for the Senior Center, Farmers’ Market, or shopping (and that non-free lunch).

The Westport Transit District’s Wheels2U provides rides to and from anywhere in Westport, and the Saugatuck and Greens Farms train stations every weekday from 5:30 to 10:30 a.m., and 4 to 9:30 p.m. Your first 5 rides are free.

Wheels2U also goes between anywhere in Westport and downtown locations every Tuesday through Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Again: the first 5 rides are free.

Just download the Wheels2U app, available at the App Store and Google Play.
Book your ride 20 minutes in advance. Track the vehicle on the app (like Uber). Then enjoy the ride in an SUV.

Connecticut’s top Democrats — Governor Ned Lamont, Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Attorney General William Tong, and Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas — came to Rive Bistro on Sunday.

They joined nearly 100 Westport Wesporters, and the Democratic Town Commitee’s candidates in November elections, at the party’s annual summer social.

Singer/songwriter — and noted “Saturday Night Live” alum — Ana Gasteyer brings her jazz standards, Broadway classics and comic stories to the Westport Country Playhouse on August 8 (8 p.m.).

SNL fans remember Gasteyer’s characters from her 6-year run: middle school music teacher Bobbie Moughan-Culp, NPR radio host Margaret Jo, Lilith Fair poetess Cinder Calhoun, along with impressions of Martha Stewart, Celine Dion and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

It’s a musical August at Blau House & Gardens.

The gorgeous hideaway off Bayberry Lane joins with the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra for 3 “Music in the Garden” Sunday concerts. Each blends music, poetry and nature, in a serene woodland setting.

The series opens on August 3 with the Quantum Leap String Quartet, featuring composer Gwyneth Walker reading her adaption from the writings of Henry David Thoreau with her suite “Trails and Open Spaces.”

On August 17, the Harmonia V Woodwind Quintet fills the gardens with lyrical melodies.

The final event (August 31) showcases “So Sings the Garden,” a collaboration of poetry reading led by Westport poet laureate Donna Disch, with performances by soprano Maureen McKay, baritone Marcelo Guzzo, pianist Thomas Cuffari, and cellist Gunnar Sahlin.

Each evening includes an optional garden tour from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., with concerts beginning at 6. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic before the performances. Parking and shuttle service is provided at Coleytown Elementary School.

“Cheese Fries & Chili Dips” — Weston native Chris Fuller’s one-man “hilarious and heartfelt story of a pro golfer’s bipolar journey to wellness” — returns to the barn at the Westport Country Playhouse on August 22.

There’s a pre-show wine party at 6 p.m.. The show is at 7. It’s followed by a special post-performance discussion on “breaking the stigma,” with Yale University mental health specialists.

Kay McGhee Leary — a 1973 Staples High School graduate — died peacefully on Saturday in Jacksonville, Florida. She was 70.

In Westport she was involved in Girl Scouts, and the Staples band, orchestra and choir.

She earned a bachelor of science from Skidmore College, a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida — all in nursing.

She worked as a women’s health nurse practitioner, and served as a professor at Jacksonville University and the University of Florida – Jacksonville.

Kay loved history, travel and learning, along with bridge, book clubs, and involvement with the Women’s Giving Alliance and the PEO Sisterhood, DQ Chapter.

She is survived by her husband, Todd Leary, daughter Kay Lewis Hood, and sister Bonnie McGhee Strittmatter.

A celebration of life is set for Palms Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville Beach on August 1 (11 a.m.).

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a women’s health or education-focused charity in Kay’s honor, such as the Women’s Giving Alliance.

Roundup: Housing Bill Passes In Hartford, Vigil On The Green …

After a day-long debate, and several changes, an omnibus housing bill was adopted 84-67 yesterday, by the Connecticut House of Representatives.

CT Mirror reports that important changes made from last week’s version include an assurance that “litigation couldn’t be used as an enforcement tool, and adding in a process for towns to contest their assigned numbers.”

The legislation “also includes a proposal from Gov. Ned Lamont’s office that would offer towns easier pathways to moratoriums under 8-30g. The decades-old housing law offers developers court remedies if their affordable housing proposals are denied, unless it’s for a reason of health or safety.

“Towns can get moratoriums under the law by showing they’re making progress toward increasing their percentage of designated affordable housing and are exempt from the law if at least 10% of their housing stock is designated affordable.”

The bill now heads to the State Senate, for a vote.

More than 200 Westporters of all ages, and many faiths, gathered on Jesup Green yesterday evening.

The vigil was a show of solidarity with the Jewish community, following the murders of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim in Washington last week.

The interfaith event included remarks by Rabbis Jeremy Wiederhorn, Michael Friedman and Yehuda Kantor of Westport; Rev. Heather Sinclair of the United Methodist Church, and past Carl McCluster from Bridgeport, who was recently in Israel.

Congressman Jim Himes — who knew Sarah — called her a “shining light.” Senator Richard Blumenthal also spoke, as did 1st Selectwoman Jen Tooker. She assured the Jewish community that Westport is a safe place for all.

The Representative Town Meeting (RTM) Finance and Education Committees hold a joint meeting tonight (Wednesday, 7:15 p.m., Zoom).

Yesterday’s Roundup included news about a GoFundMe campaign for Joseph Oyebog.

Friends of the popular local tennis instructor, who opened a tennis academy in his native Cameroon that changed the lives of thousands of youngsters, were raising funds to medically evacuate him to the US, for treatment of life-threatening complications.

Joseph died last night, before he could be airlifted here.

Organizers say: “As we grieve this unimaginable loss, we also celebrate the powerful legacy he leaves behind. “For over 25 years, he poured his heart, soul, and every resource he had into building OTA. The tens of thousands of students he lifted up are a living testament to the impact one man can make.

“Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared, and supported Joseph on this journey. Your kindness meant the world to him; now, it means everything to those he leaves behind.

“We are keeping this campaign open to honor Joseph’s memory by covering remaining medical and funeral expenses, supporting his family during this difficult time, and ensuring the continued operation of the Oyebog Tennis Academy—his life’s work.

The Westport Transit District has reached a milestone: 100,000 rides.

Natalie Lloyd — a nanny who lives elsewhere and commutes to Westport, using Wheels2U to travel between the train station and her job — was the 100,000th rider.

She calls the service “the best thing ever. It’s reliable, reasonable and so worth it..

Wheels2U — the on-demand commuter and community shuttle service — recorded over 2,500 rides last month alone. That follows a recent switch to a new service operator; smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, and the launch of a downtown pilot program that expands midday service to the Senior Center, Farmers’ Market and Jesup Green (Tuesdays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.).

Riders book $2 rides through the Wheel2U app. Average wait times are about 10 minutes. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available.

Leave it to writers to come up with a catchy name for the Westport Writers’ Workshop’s annual fundraiser.

“Lit & Wit” is a night of comedy. The laughter is for a good cause: the organization’s outreach program, through which underserved populations participate in pro bono writing workshops.

Headliner for the June 4 event (7 p.m., Saugatuck Rowing Club) is Jane Condon  (“an upper crust Roseanne,” according to the Associated Press).

She’s joined by another dozen comics: Olivia Barbulescu, Christine Zalewski, Calder Stokes, Brad Bruckner, Alyssa Katz, Mat Orefice, Kim Berns, Craig Lottner, Ivy Eisenberg, Liz Austin, Aline Weiller, and John Bennett.

Wheels2U Adds Senior Center, Jesup Green And More

It’s a yearly ritual: the Board of Finance cuts funds for the Westport Transit District. And every year, the WTD appeals to the Representative Town Meeting for restoration.

This year, there’s a new twist.

Despite the possible loss of funding for Wheels2U, the WTD is adding new hours and destinations to the  curb-to-train station, on-demand commuter shuttle.

In addition to its normal operating hours (5:45 to 10:30 a.m., 4 to 9:30 p.m.), riders will now be able to go from anywhere in Westport to the Senior Center, Farmers’ Market and Jesup Green.

Rides begin at 9 a.m. and last through 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The fare is $2 per ride.

Users should book a ride 20 minutes before they would normally leave for their destination. Once the ride is booked, they will receive an estimated time of arrival, and can track the minivan (like Uber) on the Wheels2U app. Riders must be able to meet the minivan at the curb.

Wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available by request in the app. Riders requiring door-to-door assistance should continue using Westport’s services for the elderly and people with disabilities. Click here for details.

Though excited about the expansion, WTD co-director Peter Gold cautions that
funding for Wheels2U may end June 30. If the RTM does not restore funding, the one-year pilot program will end too.

Roundup: Mattress Recycling, Supper & Soul, Easter Eggs …

Americans discard 20 million mattresses and box springs annually. That’s 55,000 that land in incinerators and landfills each day.

But up to 90% of old mattresses can be recycled into carpet pads, exercise equipment cushions, bike seats, insulation, air filters and steel materials.

Sustainable Westport can help. They’ll host a free mattress/ box spring recycling event on Saturday, April 26 (8:30 to 11:30 a.m., Earthplace).

Dry and unsoiled mattresses and box springs are welcome. Please do not bring those that are damaged, wet, or contaminated (bed bugs, etc.).

If you can’t bring your mattress or box spring, Westport Boy Scout Troop 36 will provide a pickup service for a small donation. Click here to sign up.

Green River — the Creedence Clearwater Revival/John Fogerty tribute show — takes center stage at the Westport Library at 8 p.m.

Westport Transit Director Peter Gold writes: “Westport is in danger of losing the Wheels2U shuttle yet again.

“The Board of Finance once again voted at its March meeting to eliminate all funding for Wheels2U, the WTD’s door-to-train station on-demand commuter shuttle. This will effectively shut down the service as of June 30. (The door-to- door service for the elderly and persons with disabilities will not be affected.)

“The Finance and Transit Committees of the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) meet on April 21 and April 22, respectively, to make recommendations to the full RTM regarding the budget for Wheels2U.

“The full RTM meets May 2 to vote on restoring funding to keep the shuttle running for another year.

“Please send an email to the RTM (RTM-DL@Westportct.gov) urging the RTM to restore the budget and keep the shuttle alive.

“Wheels2U provided over 20,362 rides to and from Westport’s 2 train stations to more than 1,230 people since the start of the current fiscal year on July 1, 2024, with 2,590 rides to and from Westport’s train stations in March alone.

“Wheels2U supports Westport residents and businesses and aids economic development by providing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way for Westport commuters, reverse commuters and others to link their homes, their employers, and downtown to the train stations.

“It takes a vote of 70% of RTM members present and voting at a meeting to override the Board of Finance and restore the funding for Wheels2U. Every bit of support matters.”

1975 Staples High School graduate Naomi Schalit and her husband John Christe — co-founders of the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting — were inducted into the New England Newspaper Hall of Fame last month.

They were honored at the Portland event for their commitment to investigative journalism and public service.

Maine Governor Janet Mills attended the event, to show her support for Schalit and Christie. Speaking of the 1st Amendment, she said, “When it goes, we won’t even know that it’s gone because you won’t be there to report it.” (Hat tip: Douglass Davidoff)

Roundup: Downtown Traffic Solution, CNBC, Betty Lou …

Last weekend, the Westport Transit District rolled out a soution to holiday shopping traffic.

This weekend, Wheels2U — the  on-demand train station service — will operate once again.

Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday (December 20 -21), a Wheels2U vehicle will pick you up anywhere in Westport. It will take you downtown, then back home again when you’re through.

Stops are at Jesup Green opposite the Westport Book Shop, and Elm Street across from Serena & Lily.

Download the Wheels2U app, and book your ride 20 minutes before you want to leave. Rides are just $2 per passenger, open to all Westport residents and visitors. Children 12 and under must ride with an adult.

Last night’s Pic of the Day featured a daytime view of an intriguing creation on Bridge Street, just before the Cribari Bridge heading to Saugatuck.

It’s a miniature version of the historic span, complete with a candy cane street light and teddy bear.

The story noted that the tableau included holiday lights.

Early this morning, Mary Hanrahan sent a photo of the scene at night. It looks even cooler, all lit up.

The only down side is that drivers may now take their eyes off the road, just before the narrow bridge.

So slow down. Be safe. And enjoy the view!

Westporters learned a lot about investing — and sports, and politics — when  billionaire financier/former Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Lasry, and fellow TV personality Dave Briggs, chatted onstage at the Westport Library last month.

Yesterday, a national audience learned from the 2 Westporters too.

Their interview was featured on CNBC, when Lasry went on the business channel to discuss investing in college sports.

VFW Post 399 is a warm, welcoming place for any meeting. There are plenty of veterans-related events there — and many others with outside groups, that rent the Riverside Avenue facility (for a very modest sum).

The vibe was especially warm earlier this week. The VFW, American Legion and auxiliary enjoyed spicy chili, before their end-of-year meetings.

Today’s “Westport … Naturally” feature takes us to Grace Salmon Park.

The small riverside oasis on Imperial Avenue has many devoted users. Some were upset the other day, to see significant sections laid bare.

It’s all goodo. The work was part of the town’s Invasive Species Management Project. Run collaboratively by the Parks & Recreation and Conservation Departments, the goal is to remove invasives, to improve wetland health and biodiversity.

Grace Salmon Park looks a bit different these days. It’s more of a gem than ever.

Downtown parking has gotten “lots” of attention lately.

In meetings and online, Westporters have talked discussed the lack of spots, and/or the distance they walk from them.

This holiday season, the Westport Transit District has a solution.

Wheels2U — their on-demand train station service — will operate this weekend and next.

Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on December 14 -15 and 20 -21, Wheels2U will pick you up anywhere in Westport. They’ll take you downtown, then back home again when you’re through.

Club203 — Westport’s social organization for adults with disaiblities — celebrated the holidays last night at the VFW.

It was another great evening. And — as with all of the club’s events — many people and businesses made it rock.

Westport Police made 2 custodial arrests between December 4 and 11.

A 21-year-old Bronx man was charged with 2 counts of larceny, and 2 counts of conspiracy to commit larceny, following an investigation into 2 shoplifting incidents at Ulta Beauty in 2021. His bond was $100,000.

A 51-year-old Bronx man was arrested for identity theft, after a report from TD Bank of a suspect using fraudulent identifaction to obtain a debit card. He was released on $10,000 bond.

Police also issued these citations:

  • Traveling unreasonably fast: 13 citations
  • Failure to comply with state traffic commission regulations: 3
  • Operating a motor vehicle under suspension: 2
  • Operating an unregistered motor vehicle: 2
  • Failure to obey stop sign: 2
  • Failure to obey traffic control signals: 2
  • School zone violation: 1
  • Opoerating a motor vehicle without a license: 1
  • Failure to renew registration: 1
  • Failure to drive in the proper lane: 1

Westport’s holiday miracle — the less-than-a-week project that ensured the Cribari Bridge will be lit again this year — is nearly complete.

The Public Works and Fire Departments, plus AJ Penna & Sons Construction, Kevin Ancker of Riverside Mobil and a corps of volunteers, unboxed, strung and tested hundreds of bulbs last night, on the 135-year-old Saugatuck River span. The Police Department added logistical support.

The gala bridge lighting is set for 5 p.m. today (Monday). Everyone is invited.

Westport PAL — one of the lights’ sponsors — will have collection boxes for the toy drive they run, with the Westport Police Department. Unwrapped toys can be dropped off at the bridge, and the Bridge at Saugatuck restaurant.

Wheels2U — Westport Transit District’s on-demand transit program offering $2 shared rides between any Westport address and the town’s 2 train stations — has announced new upgrades.

They include:
● More comfortable vehicles. The new fleet of minivans (many of them wheelchair-accessible) provides a smoother, quieter ride than previous vehicles.
● A “greener” ride. The new vehicles are significantly more fuel-efficient as well.
● Longer hours. Morning service has been expanded by half an hour, from 5:45 to 10:30 a.m. Evening service is 4 to 9:30 p.m. weekdays.
● Improved booking. Users can request rides starting at 5:30 a.m. for a pickup as early as 5:45, and as early as 3:45 p.m. for a 4:00 pickup. They can request rides as late as 10:30 a.m. or 9:30 p.m. too.

The new vehicles are already in operation. They replace the entire old fleet.

Roundup: Pops Concert, Long Island Sound, Adopt A Kitten …

Westport’s great end-of-school-year/start-of-summer tradition — Staples High School’s Pops Concert at the Levitt Pavilion — is back!

This year’s show is Friday, June 7 (lawn opens at 6 p.m.; concert at 7; BYO chair; food trucks on site). The always sold-out event features the Staples Symphonic Orchestra and Band, Jazz Ensemble, Orphenians, Choralaires and other small group ensembles.

Once again, media personality David Pogue will serve as the warm, welcoming emcee.

Tickets are free, but a suggested donation of $15 per ticket is suggested to offset the production costs.

Tickets are available at staplesmusic.org beginning next Wednesday, May 29 at 9 a.m.: first-come, first-served! In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be performed in the Staples High School auditorium at 70 North Avenue, where tickets will be honored.

Of course, there are many ways to define “best.”

But if you’re looking at water quality alone, Save the Sound has an answer.

It’s Burying Hill Beach.

Their grades — based on 2023 date from 197 public and private beaches, in Connecticut and New York — gave an A+ to the small Greens Farms spot.

Compo Beach and Sherwood Island State Park both earned a B+.

Since they began in 2007, Westport Animal Shelter Advocates has watched with dismay as the number of abandoned animals her grows.

Recently, a little puppy was left in a shopping bag near the Volvo dealership.

WASA brought it up to date on vet care. After an adoption process involving an application, meet and greets and a home visit, it was adopted by a loving family.

On Wednesday, WASA was notified of 3 kittens abandoned in a box at the transfer station. They were kept safe there by long-time employee Bud Valiante.

WASA arrived quickly. The kittens were examined, vaccinated, treated for tick infestations, and are now in the care of a skilled and wonderful WASA volunteer.

They are about six weeks old, and doing very well

There are many important days on the Westport Rotary Club calendar.

But this past Tuesday was extra special. Members handed checks to Fairfield County charities they support.

Nearly 100 people attended the luncheon, at which 41 non-profits received a total of $200,000.

Over 4,000 teams from more than 50 countries competed in the recent Wharton Investment Competition, sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania.

Using an online stock market simulator, they learn about strategy building, teamwork, communication, risk, diversification, company and industry analysis, and many other aspects of investing.

Kings Highway Elementary School officially opened its Outdoor Learning Center yesterday.

Superintendent of schools Thomas Scarice joined principal Tracey Carbone, vice principals Catherine Carmona and Jame’el Lawrence, PTA presidents Denise Acampora and Arielle Leighton, and past PTA president Jeni Bianco, for the ceremony.

The Outdoor Learning Center will be used for activities like reading, morning meetings, writing, snack breaks and more.

Congratulations too to the recipients of a Westport Green Building Award for Achievement in Sustainable Design and Construction. It goes to a Saugatuck Shores home damaged by a tornado in 2020, and rebuilt for resilience and sustainability.

The project team includes lead Patricia Miller of Residential Design; Marc and Joseph Fuscaldo of Fuscaldo Builders, and smart home designer Barry Reiner of InnerSpace Electronics.

The award, given by the town and Sustainable Westport, recognizes residential and commercial projects that make significant contributions to sustainability, and Westport’s future as a net zero community.

This spring, the Westport Transit District updated its Wheels2U app. Users who downloaded it before March 26 need to update it. New riders are encouraged to download it now.

To thank everyone for downloading or updating, rides on Wheels2U are free for all riders next week (Monday through Friday, May 20-24). The normal $2 fare will be waived.

For underserved people with writing talent, finding resources is no laughing matter.

But “Lit & Wit” is. The comedy night fundraiser is a Westport Writers’ Workshop initiative to raise funds for pro bono writing workshops in underserved communities.

The brainchild of WWW writers Aline Weiller and Alyssa Katz, plus WEstport comedian Jerry Kuyper, it’s set for June 6  (7 p.m., Saugatuck Rowing Club).

Roundup: Gather ‘Round The Table, Dan Hurley, Scrabble …

Homes with Hope invites residents interested in helping young women in need of a supportive home to “Gather ‘Round the Table” on May 14 (11:30 a.m., The Inn at Longshore).

The theme of the non-profit’s annual event — “home as a place of healing” — inspires local designers and home stores to create and donate unique tablescapes. Attendees can purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win the table designs.

The luncheon benefits Project Return at Susie’s House, on Compo Road North. Plans have been approved for renovations, to better accommodate the needs of homeless women in Fairfield County.

Once completed, the unique program will offer a longer-term housing solution, in a nurturing and home-like environment.

Roundup: School Redistricting, Capital Spending, Riverside Avenue …

In 2018, the Board of Education broached the subject of redistricting.

It went nowhere.

Another attempt — the first in over a quarter century — has begun. It involves only the 5 elementary schools.

A demographer consultant presented the first scenarios Thursday night, at the BOE meeting.

The first phase, in the 2025-26 school year, would balance enrollment between Long Lots, Greens Farms and Saugatuck Elementary Schools.

Phase II (2026-27) would balance enrollment between Kings Highway and Coleytown Els.

Several big capital spending projects loom in Westport.

What are the rationales, goals and processes?

Town Hall and Westport Public Schools leaders share insights this Tuesday (March 26. 7 p.m., Westport Library), in a community conversation.

1st Selectwoman Jen Tooker and Superintendent of Schools Thomas Scarice will present their capital spending strategies and rationales. A panel of experts will discuss possible funding strategies, capital planning best practices, and the approval process for achieving capital spending goals. An audience Q-and-A session follows.

The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Westport, and the Westport Library’s Common Ground initiative.

Longshore is one of several large capital projects planned for the future.

In the 6 years since the Parkland High School shooting, Fred Guttenberg has become one of America’s most prominent anti-gun violence advocates.

On May 21 (noon), he’s the guest speaker at CT Against Gun Violence’s spring benefit luncheon. He’ll discuss his — and his fellow activists’ — efforts to turn pain into purpose, as well his book “Find the Helpers: What 9/11 and Parkland Taught Me about Recovery, Purpose and Hope.”

Since its founding in 1993, CAGV has lobbied effectively for some of the strongest gun laws in the country. ​

They were behind Connecticut’s 1993 assault weapons ban, the 3rd in the nation. Since Sandy Hook, they’ve  worked closely with the state legislature to enact universal background checks, an expanded assault weapons ban, and limits on large capacity magazines.​

What’s even more remarkable, says photographer Evan Chevrier, is that at the time he took the image, there were no other cars in front of or behind them.

At least that made driving away easy.
