Curtain Falls On Farrow & Ball, Sweet Frog

Two more popular-but-apparently-not-enough Westport stores have closed.

Farrow & Ball has vacated its Compo Acres spot, near Trader Joe’s. The UK-based paint-and-paper crafts shop’s website now directs customers to Greenwich, or one of the Ring’s End locations.

A year ago, Farrow & Ball’s intriguing window invited a peek inside.

Meanwhile, Sweet Frog has served its last frozen yogurt in the Fresh Market shopping center. The nearest Connecticut location is now Guilford.

Sweet Frog follows Peach Wave and Pinkberry out the Westport door. None of those national chains could cut it here.

So what’s the last frozen yogurt place left?

Top This – an independently owned (aka “mom and pop”) shop. It opened 8 years ago, when frozen yogurt stores were a new concept.

And Top This is downtown — just a few steps from Main Street, near the Post Road bridge.

One success story does not make a trend. On the other hand, they must be doing something right.

But Is It Art?

That’s the question an alert — and concerned — “06880” reader wants us all to answer.

She writes:

Some pieces of art hanging in Sweet Frog are part of the youth arts forum. I understand that art is a form of expression, but I also understand that many pieces of art show touchy topics. I wonder how Westport parents feel about this piece of art hanging in a local frozen yogurt store. I find it inappropriate.

She asked. You answer. Let’s crowd-source this one.

Is it appropriate for a frozen yogurt store? If yes, why? If not, why not? And if not, where else would be appropriate?

Sweet Frog Hops Into Town

Sweet Frog is Westport’s newest entrant in the self-serve, all-natural, pick-your-flavors-and-add-your-toppings yogurt bar wars. (They say they have a “secret ingredient,” though. They call it “fun.”)

Sweet Frog hopes to open tomorrow (Friday), just down from Fresh Market in the space previously occupied by Xenia Mediterranean restaurant.

Sweet FrogThe Virginia-based franchise prides itself on giving back to the community — particularly through youth sports, clubs and arts.

Even before opening, they bought an ad in the Westport Soccer Association‘s program book for the March 16-17 tournament. And threw in 2 free frozen yogurts for a year to the tourney prize list.

Then they said that for anyone bringing in the ad from the program book, 25% of their purchase will be donated to the WSA.

I assume Sweet Frog has a pretty good product — after all, they’re wildly successful in other places.

But I do know for sure that they’ve “kick”-started their presence in Westport in a big, friendly way.
