Planning & Zoning Commission candidates take the Town Hall auditorium stage tomorrow (Wednesday, October 11, 7 p.m.). They’re followed by a double-header on Thursday, October 12: the Board of Education at 7 p.m., Board of Finance at 8:15.

An overflow crowd of 1,000 — including Governor Ned Lamont and Senator Richard Blumenthal, local officials and many clergy — packed Temple Israel last night, for a “We Stand With Israel” solidarity gathering.

Representatives from nearly 2 dozen area synagogues and other organizations hosted the event, which was organized in just 48 hours by the Jewish Federation of Greater Fairfield County.

Westporters Arthur and Lisa Hayes are in Paris this week.

On a boat in the Seine yesterday night, they saw from a distance that the Eiffel Tower was not lit in white, as usual. One half seemed to be dark; the other was very dark blue.

As they got closer, they all understood. The tour boat grew very quiet, as they passed by.

Il Pastaficio is Westport’s hottest new restaurant.

But it’s already drawing notice.

Owner/chef Federico Perandin will appear on Guy Fieri’s legendary “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” Food Network show. The episode airs this Friday (October 13, 9 p.m.).

The Black Duck was featured on the same show in 2009. People still talk about it.

Looks like that will be true too for our new Post Road authentic Italian place. Here’s to Il Pastaficio, and 2037!

WestportMoms’ Fall Festival returns for a 3rd autumn — with a great new venue.

The Compo Beach fields (across from the playground) are the site for this year’s event. It’s this Saturday (October 14), from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The day includes

Today is World Mental Health Day.

Westport’s own David Briggs will conduct an Instagram interview tonight (Tuesday, October 10, 7:30 p.m., @westportlibrary) with Rhone co-founder and CEO Nate Checketts. They’ll talk about how the men’s wellness brand — which opened on Main Street this summer — is committed to men’s mental health issues.

Longtime Westporter Marty Yellen offered a presentation on aging — and a cancer treatment update — at yesterday’s Y’s Women meeting.

Yellen was an engineer on the Hubble Space Telescope. He then earned a doctorate in medical biology engineering. He works now with Yale scientists, biologists and engineers on diseases that come with aging, researching techniques and treatments to alleviate them.

Yellen warned the large audience to stay away from beef (particularly grilling), processed meats that can stand at room temperature like salami, and animal fats. 

He suggested instead lamb, chicken, fish, plenty of fiber and vegetables, nuts, yogurt, beans — and most importantly, virgin olive oil rather than butter. 

Daily exercise daily — for example, 30 minutes of walking — is especially important. 

“You are your own doctor,” Yellen said. “Take care of your body, eat right, exercise daily — and don’t smoke!”

Speaking of health: The 29th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Fairfield County event is always a celebration of courage and hope

Over 5,000 participants will gather this Sunday (October 15, 9 a.m. to noon), at Sherwood Island State Park.

Over 3 decades, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’s 3- to 5-mile walks have  provided a supportive community for survivors, caregivers and families. The event funds breast cancer research, programs and services.

From Azerbaijan to Westport: Amina Figarova has moved from her upbringing behind the Iron Curtain to become a celebrated jazz pianist and composer.

Il Pastaficio Adds To Downtown Dining Flavor

The short stretch of Post Road between Myrtle Avenue and Main Street is chockablock with restaurants. Italian, Spanish, Thai, Mexican — it’s all there.

Around the corner on Church Lane, there’s American, Japanese and (soon) Israeli.

Is there room for one more — another Italian, at that?

Federico Perandin says, fervently: Sì!

For several months, diners have discovered — and loved — Il Pastaficio’s takeout menu. Whether ordering to-go or buying raw pasta and sauces (with step-by-step cooking instructions), they’ve embraced the spot in a former clothing store, across from Design Within Reach.

Now — building on the success of his first restaurant with the same name in Greenwich — the Padova native has add full service, in-house lunch and dinner.

News of the soft opening earlier this month spread quickly. Il Pastaficio has established itself as one more downtown dining destination.

Perandin attended 2 international hospitality management schools in his native country. In the 1990s he changed his professional path, and became a successful advertising executive.

But he never lost his passion for cooking. Each summer, he catered for the Ferrari racing team.

As he traveled throughout Italy for the advertising and communications firm he founded, he explored regional cuisines. He was fascinated by the art of pasta making.

In 2015 he, his wife and young son made a major move. They came to the US, and in 2018 he opened the small Il Pastaficio in Greenwich. (The name is a play on “pastificio,” Italian for a store that makes pasta.)

The flavorful dishes — all made on the premises (including sauces), “following traditional recipes, with no compromises,” he says — was an instant success. Customers appreciated the little touches, like organic flour imported from Italy.

Perandin began searching for space in Westport — a town, he thought, whose cosmopolitan, well-traveled residents would appreciate his approach. “People here know how to eat well,” he notes.

It took a while — and the pandemic did not help. But after looking at nearly 2 dozen different locations, he found the current one.

“It’s a mecca of culinary experiences,” he says. He appreciates the many nearby restaurants, including the traditional Italian spots.

“People love pasta,” Perandin explains. “I eat it every day.” His pasta contains no additives or preservatives, he says, so it is organic, artisanal, very flavorful — and light.

“I feel like I’m in Italy,” one diner told him. “That’s my goal,” Perandin replied.

The menu includes appetizers like homemade fresh potatoes fried gnocchi;  gourmet dishes like lemon linguine with Siberian Baerii caviar and black tea Alpine butter; lamb racks cooked with sous vide technique, creamy potato and red beets Parmanatier with roasted leeks, and roasted cauliflower in a mint and creamy goat cheese sauce.

Dinner: Wild boar handmade ravioli in a saffron sauce and hazelnut crumble. The black stripe in the ravioli is made with squid ink. 

Il Pastaficio also offers wine (Italian only, of course) and cocktails and desserts (pastries and gelato).

Dessert: Millefoglie with authentic Sicilian ricotta (imported from Italy) and mixed berries.

The décor is fresh and inviting. His chef and baker, Perandin says,  have both worked for Michelin-starred restaurants.

He plans monthly special regional dinners, and pasta-making classes (for individuals, parties and corporate team-building). Il Pastaficio also caters.

But that’s not all. Just outside the restaurant, a vending machine will soon sell fresh pasta — 24 hours a day.

Designed by an Italian company Perandin says it is the only one of its kind in the world.

“If you’re coming home late from the train station, even if our kitchen and takeout is closed, you can have fresh pasta.”

Roundup: Tax-Free Week, Pastaficio, Greenwalds …

The Westport Downtown Association reminds shoppers that Connecticut’s Sales Tax-Free week began yesterday. It runs through this Saturday (August 26).

Retail purchases of most clothing and footwear priced under $100 are exempt from Connecticut sales and use tax. The exemption applies to each eligible item under $100.f

Many retailers add their own discounts.

Westport firefighters responded to a structure fire on Compo Road South just before midnight yesterday.

All occupants were safely out of the house. Damage was limited to the exterior.

Mutual aid from Norwalk and Fairfield provided station coverage. Westport Police and Emergency Medical Service assisted.

The last unit cleared at 1:36 a.m. As fire companies were leaving, they were dispatched to I-95 northbound between Exits 17 and 18 for a motor vehicle crash involving a car and tractor-trailer, with injuries.

Less than 10 minutes after that call, additional companies responded to a second motor vehicle crash with injuries in the same vicinity. Westport EMS assisted at both incidents.

Pastificio has been closed for a couple of weeks.

A sign in its window on the Post Road store says: “We inform our kind customers that Il Pastificio will reopen on Sunday 20 [yesterday], temporarily as a pasta shop and not as a restaurant, until a date to be determined.”

We’re not sure if that means they’ll go back at some point to also serving as a restaurant — or if they’ll close at some point permanently.

Tommy Greenwald is a man of many talents. The 1979 Staples High School graduate is a noted advertising executive, playwright and young adult author.

He’s also known as the father of Charlie Greenwald — no slouch in the acting/comedy/writing departments either. (And himself a Staples grad, class of 2012.)

Father and son have now collaborated on a new book. They co-wrote “The Rescues: Finding Home,” a children’s book about rescue animals.

(“It’s appropriate for everyone who’s alive,” notes Tommy, in true marketing mode.)

They’ll be appearing at the Westport Library’s StoryFest in October. If you can’t wait that long, check them out at Brooklyn’s Books are Magic (September 9, noon to 1 p.m.), the Rye Book Festival (September 23, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or the Chappaqua Book Festival (September 30, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Frank Mastrone brought his very popular American Songbook show to the Levitt Pavilion last night.

Joining him were 2 other Broadway stars, both of whom performed — as he did — in “Phantom of the Opera.”

And both are Westporters: Staples High School graduate and classically trained opera singer Terry Eldh, and Dodie Pettit, aka one-half of Aztec Two-Step 2.0.

The evening was sponsored by Roger Leifer, as part of his “Sunday Series.” He threw a pre- and post-concert party for his tenants — a rare but welcome gesture by a commercial real estate landlord.
