What a great way to start the Memorial Day weekend!

The Beach Goes On

Living at the beach is a dream.

Until something like Hurricane Sandy turns it into a nightmare.

But Compo, Old Mill and other shoreline residents say it’s worth it. They’re used to challenges.

They adapt.

These owners are already back home.

These owners are already back home…

They’re raising their homes to FEMA standards. They’re gaining safety (and maybe a garage underneath).

Plus — this is Sandy’s dark cloud/silver lining — they now enjoy fantastic new views.

...and so are these.

…and so are these.

Some homes are not fixable. In their place, owners build stronger houses.

Other homes are, or will soon be, up for sale. (Like Betsy and Dan Kahn’s — she provided these fantastic photos.)

Many residents have lived elsewhere for the past 9 months, or huddled in only part of their under-renovation house. The wait, they say, will be worth it.

And beach life will be better than ever.

Love Was In The Air

The story of last night’s Compo Beach wedding goes way beyond the fact that it took place on the hottest day of the year.

Edwina Wilson and Matt Love were the lucky (if broiling) couple. Both are longtime Westporters.

Edwina’s grandfather — the late Ed Kahn — was chairman of the Board of Finance, and an RTM moderator. He helped the town purchase Longshore (where — of course — the post-wedding reception was held). Edwina (who was named for Ed) is in veterinary school in California.

Both she and Matt (a Staples grad) worked at the Saugatuck Rowing Club. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in psychology.

So — one day soon — they will be Dr. and Dr. Love.

There was lots going on this afternoon at Wakeman Town Farm.

The Family Fun Day included food, meet-the-animals, talk-to-farmers — and of course a pie-eating contest.

This Might Be The Greatest “06880” Photo Ever

There are many ways to sum up our 4th of July holiday feelings — why we’re so grateful to live in the United States, especially in a town like Westport.

But this photo expresses our appreciation far greater than any words:

Betsy P. Kahn took it from her Compo neighborhood window. It’s her favorite view — and why not?

The idyllic snapshot of life at the beach could have been taken last week (as it was) — or 50 years ago. Hence the vintage editing — perfect for a day when we look back on our past.

Happy 4th of July weekend, Betsy! Happy Independence Day holiday, Westport! Here’s to  237 more, America!
