[OPINION] Compo Neighbors: Common Sense Needed For ADU Setback

Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) have been embraced by many Westporters. 

But in neighborhoods with dense housing — like Compo Beach — there can be unintended consequences.

David Johnson and Holly Jaffe live near the beach. They sent this letter — signed by 17 neighbors — to “06880.”

On Monday (October 27), the Planning & Zoning Commission needs to review a zoning permit issued last Friday by the Zoning Board of Appeals. It allows for an ADU on a postage stamp lot in the Compo Beach area.

[NOTE FROM “06880”: This item is not on Monday’s P&Z agenda. The November 3 meeting has been canceled. The Building Department may soon issue a building permit, for work to begin.]

It claims to adhere to the new regulation that an ADU be set back 10 feet from the primary dwelling.

According to Westport regulations, there should be no obstruction in the setback. Stairs and other means of egress are allowed.

However, they may only be 20% of the setback. The stairs and compressor platforms intrude over 5 feet into the 10-foot setback.

That is over 50% of the setback.

Were this to be allowed it would set a disturbing precedent for the entire town, not only the densely populated Compo Beach area.

Setbacks in our town are there for reasons: To ensure public safety.

To preserve health and welfare

To maintain neighborhood character, by creating open space between buildings and property lines

These regulations help provide adequate light and air, prevent overcrowding, facilitate public services, and protect against fire and other dangers.

This particular 26-foot high ADU “tower” affects at least 7 houses on Norwalk Avenue. And 7 houses on Westport Avenue.

Eighteen neighbors have signed petitions against this zoning permit. More are coming.

We wholeheartedly believe in the intent of the new ADU legislation, to provide alternative housing options for a myriad of folks in town here.

Please don’t misunderstand. But it can’t be the Wild West. It’s got to be soberly and appropriately reviewed, using common sense.

We hope that in their last meeting prior to the election, the Planning & Zoning Commission will consider the unexpected impact of this regulation.

Roundup: Election, Trash, Hoops …

A small crowd gathered at Toquet Hall last night, for the League of Women Voters’ “Meet the Board of Education Candidates” night.

The 8 BOE hopefuls answered questions ranging from the life experiences that define them, and their motivation to run, to how the Westport school would be different 4 years from now, if they’re elected.

Speaking still of the election: Here is an update on the Voter CheckList website, which allows users to access early voting records in real time.

Residents who wish to use it must contact the Registrar of Voters’ office, to get a login and password. Email dgreenberg@westportct.gov or msignore@westportct.gov.

The site shows that through yesterday — the first 3 days of early voting — 2.86% of eligible Westport voters have cast ballots.

The breakdown:

  • Democrats: 322 of 7,954 eligible voters (4.05%)
  • Republicans: 76 of 3,338 eligible voters (2.28%)
  • Unaffiliated: 144 of 7,582 eligible voters (1.90%)

Last Sunday’s season-opening group-focused town cleanup was a resounding success.

Assumption Youth Group and St. Francis Youth Group, in collaboration with SCA-Crowley, spearheaded the effort.

The teenagers and parents focused on the Greens Farms corridor along I-95, from Hillspoint Road to Compo Road South.

They measured the amount of waste collected with a digital scale. The result: 135 pounds.

The 3rd annual “Hoops for Heart” event — held last weekend at the Westport Weston Family YMCA — was special.

It raised nearly $79,000 for research into single ventricle (half a heart) syndrome.

Community support was outstanding. There were 12 teams, with nearly all the players from Westport. Over 150 people attended.

Extra special: Staples High School captains Sam Clachko and Dhilan Lowman played.

Sure, their team won.

But their presence there — as role models for young boys and girls — and their “big hearts” (for those born with half a heart) made a great day even better. (Hat tip: Britt Melsheimer)

Westport Police made 3 custodial arrests between October 15 and 21.

A 54-year-old Bridgeport woman was charged with larceny, following a  shoplifting incident of goods valued at $510.56.

Two New Haven women, ages 45 and 29, were charged with larceny, following a shoplifting incident of goods valued at $607.

Westport Police also issued these citations:

Westport Library Verso advisory board member Sam Hendel spoke last week on “Capital, Creativity & the Future of Music Rights: at the Mondo Music Industry & Technology Conference in Brooklyn. He is the founder and managing partner of Chord Music, among other music ventures.

Other Mondo speakers included Henry Rollins and Nabil Ayers, a speaker at the Library’s VersoFest in April. Ayers also participated in the Library’s StoryFest last weekend.

Two other Verso advisory board members, Dick Wingate and Les Dinkin, also attended Mondo. Wingate spoke at the first conference, in 2015.

“Where We Stand”: Board Of Ed Candidates On Misperceptions

An informed electorate is the greatest bulwark of democracy.

Westporters understand this is a very important election. “06880” is doing our part, to help Westporters understand candidates’ perspectives on a variety of issues.

Once a week, between now and Election Day, we’ll ask the men and women running for 3 important boards — Selectmen/women, Planning & Zoning, and Education — one specific question.

We’ll print their responses verbatim.

This week’s question for the Board of Education is:

What are the biggest misperceptions you’ve heard about your candidacy for the Board of Education, and/or your prior service to the town?

Democratic Party-endorsed candidate Abby Tolan (incumbent) says:

The charge that the board rubber stamps our superintendent has come up a few times in this campaign.

The truth is, any board must operate in a civil and collaborative way in order to get things done. This board has done that. We ask questions of our superintendent and our administrators, and we work together to come to decisions and, sometimes, to compromise.  I am proud to have been part of that work.

The board must hire a superintendent whose vision and philosophy align with community needs, and evaluate his performance regularly.  The fact is, we agree with a lot of what Superintendent Scarice does.

Some candidates may be upset by making the high school phone-free during the day. Some might not be happy with the outcome of the soccer coaches’ contract non-renewals. Others are opposed to our social and emotional learning.

My work on the Board of Education and my candidacy have not been about my personal agenda, but have been about how I can advocate for every child in the Westport schools so they can achieve and thrive.

I am a former educator.  I am versed in special education, and I care deeply about the success of the whole child — academic, social, emotional and ethical.

As a Board of Education, we have important work to do. We must provide the opportunity for academic achievement to every child in a fiscally responsible way for the town. We will look at how artificial intelligence will impact teaching and learning.

We will continue to help address our children’s mental health in concert with families in a complex and changing world, and we will work with other town boards to make sure the quality of our facilities matches the quality of our education.

And, as happens every year, we must be nimble and able to pivot to address pressing issues that we couldn’t have anticipated. I would be honored to do this work on your behalf.

Robert Harrington (incumbent) was not endorsed for re-election by the Republican Town Committee. He is running as a write-in independent candidate. He says:

There are 2 big misconceptions about my candidacy: that I treat education like a business, and that I am always critical of our administration.

The first misconception likely comes from my professional background in finance and digital assets. Some people assume I see education through a corporate lens. In truth, my focus has always been on fairness, transparency, and doing what’s right for students, staff and families.

Fiscal discipline isn’t about cutting — it’s about respect: respect for the teachers and staff who make our schools great, and respect for taxpayers who expect accountability. We need to make sure that every dollar goes to the most effective areas — the classrooms, programs, and people that have the greatest impact on learning. My experience simply gives me the tools to ask tough, data-driven questions and ensure decisions are grounded in evidence and good judgment.

Over the past 4 years on the Board of Education, I’ve built a record of doing exactly that — asking hard questions, demanding clarity, and speaking up when something doesn’t sit right. That includes times when I’ve been openly critical of the superintendent and the board majority.

I voted against the 4% pay increase and early contract renewal for the superintendent — an increase higher than what was awarded to custodians and school nurses — because I strongly believed it was the wrong decision. It sent a terrible message to the employees who keep our schools running every day. This was the wrong year to make that award.

I’ve also been outspoken about the handling of the Staples soccer and tennis coach non-renewal hearings in 2025, where key process steps were missed. Unfortunately, the BOE turned its back on the former Staples soccer coaches.

It’s fair to make coaching changes — but it’s wrong to undermine the reputation of loyal, hardworking educators, employees, and community members in the process. Fairness and due process should apply to everyone.

In addition, I’ve been critical of several investigations related to the coaching situations and other serious matters, including bullying and antisemitism cases, where the process lacked consistency and where the so-called “safety plans” set up by the administration can sometimes appear to reward the bully while hurting those being bullied.

These are deeply important issues. When students and families feel that systems are protecting aggressors instead of victims, trust erodes and confidence in leadership declines. Every student deserves to feel safe, supported, and heard.

However, the second misconception — that I am always critical — is simply not true.

In most situations, I have been a strong supporter of our superintendent and administration. I’ve been one of the leading board members cheering on his forward-thinking and visionary strategic plan, and I’ve encouraged him, both publicly and privately, to take bold risks and lead with conviction.

The new cellphone ban and inclusion of AI in the district’s strategic plan are good examples of courageous policies I’ve fully supported. I also stood by him when parts of the community pushed back against the Equity Plan and social-emotional learning (SEL) in our schools.

I also backed the superintendent when he sought more resources for the facilities team, even when both Democratic and Republican board leaders would not. That kind of support doesn’t make headlines, but it reflects my belief in empowering leadership while maintaining accountability. When I see something wrong, I call it out. I won’t apologize for asking tough questions—but I also give credit where it’s due.

And finally, I’ve consistently put talent and leadership ahead of party loyalty. I’ve voted for Republicans, Democrats and unaffiliated candidates. I’m the only person in this election openly supporting both a Republican (my former running mate) and 2 unendorsed Democrats (Jodi and Stephen) alongside my own candidacy.

When my former party nominated two extreme candidates last election, I broke ranks and supported Jill Dillon, Lee Goldstein and Neil Phillips. I often disagree with Lee and Neil — but when it truly mattered, I put our school system ahead of politics. I paid a price for that decision when Republicans didn’t renominate me, but I have no regrets.

At its core, my candidacy is about integrity, independence, and putting students first. Westport deserves leaders who think critically, act fairly, and stand up for what’s right — no matter the politics.

Republican Party-endorsed candidates Dorie Hordon (incumbent), Michelle Hopson, Andy Frankel and Kaitlin Zucaro say:

The biggest misperception about our candidacy is the suggestion that this election is about partisan politics. It is not.

The issues in this campaign are hyper-local. This is about leadership, not party affiliation, and what is best for the students and taxpayers of Westport.

Each one of us – Dorie, Andy, Michelle and Kaitlin – is an independent thinker with distinct backgrounds and perspectives. Yet we share common values: the importance of respectful civil discourse, the need to listen to parents, and the responsibility to focus on issues that matter most. We want to improve our schools, prepare our students for the future, and ensure accountability in how decisions are made.

Few matters are as local as the direction and operation of a town’s schools. That’s why we were surprised to see the “Harris-Shackelford BOE 2025” campaign committee’s financial disclosures showing more than $31,000 in campaign contributions.

Even more surprising—as of October 10 nearly $25,000 of these donations came from lawyers at Susman Godfrey – Mr. Shackelford’s law firm – living in Houston, Austin, Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, New York and elsewhere.

These are individuals with no apparent connection to Westport schools. All told, excluding the candidates themselves and their spouses, less than $3,000 of their $31,000 came from Westport residents.

By contrast, contributions to our campaign have come from Westport residents who share our vision for improving our schools. In this digital age, running for local office does not require extravagant spending. Our entire budget so far is about $5,000, enough to cover lawn signs, community coffees and outreach materials.

Fiscal discipline is not just a talking point; it reflects how we operate. We are also deeply grateful to the parents and residents across town who have enthusiastically volunteered their time and energy in support of our efforts.

It is worth noting that Susman Godfrey, which reported revenues of more than $528 million in 2024 and profits of nearly $1.9 million per lawyer, is the same firm that represented the soccer coaches in their dispute with the school district over the non-renewal of contracts. The coaches, now claiming lack of due process, were represented by a Harvard-educated Susman Godfrey attorney who clerked for the US Supreme Court.

Our district is now defending against a frivolous lawsuit brought by another firm, consuming time and taxpayer resources. Having played a significant role in fueling that controversy, Mr. Shackelford now claims the Board should have a “partnership” with the superintendent and “mutual respect.”

Whatever the merits of their candidacy, lawyers in Texas, California and New York should not be funding or influencing the outcome of Westport’s Board of Education election. Is this what we want our local elections to become? Our schools and our children belong to this community.

We need a board that listens, respects, and collaborates and provides direction and oversight to the administration. We need a board that restores focus on academic excellence and the issues that matter most — and can actually get things done. That is why the 4 of us are running.

Early voting has begun.  Come out and vote.

Two Democrats will be on the ballot as petitioning candidates, having secured over 400 signatures. Jodi Harris and Stephen Shackelford say:

One of the biggest misperceptions we’ve heard about our candidacy is that this race is about replacing the superintendent.

It is not. This election is about leadership at the Board of Education, and the future of Westport schools. It’s about whether the BOE can govern confidently and proactively, working with our superintendent to overcome blind spots and protect our public schools.

Another major misperception has to do with “endorsed” candidates.

The Westport Democratic Town Committee endorsed 2 candidates for the Board of Education, highlighting their vetting process. In August, one of those candidates withdrew from the race. The other candidate, who is an appointee on the current board, has access to party-provided resources like funding, voter data and campaign coordination.

We did not receive the 72-member DTC endorsement, so we don’t have access to party resources. But we wouldn’t trade our route to the ballot for anything. We earned our spot by securing the handwritten, in-person signatures of more than 440 registered Westport Democrats. That grassroots effort represents real people valuing choice beyond party-appointed candidates, and it allowed us to hear directly from residents about their most pressing concerns.

This choice between party endorsements and grassroots-driven candidates is playing out across the entire race. While 5 candidates have been endorsed by official political committees (including 4 Republicans), the other 3 candidates for the BOE are challenging that system: the two of us, who petitioned our way into the race, and Robert Harrington, who is running as a write-in candidate after the Republican Town Committee shut him out. We believe Westport deserves a choice that places people over politics.

Another misperception is that protecting special education requires direct personal SpEd experience. While one of us has unique personal experience, the real issue is systemic. We’ve heard from many families about their enormous, costly challenges securing the services their children need.

Though some experiences are positive, this uneven access to support has festered for years. The board needs independent voices willing to challenge this status quo and its high costs to both families and taxpayers. We will be those voices.

This brings us back to the larger misperception: that this race is about one person, one event, or one group of stakeholders. It is not.

It is about whether the BOE has the strength, skills and independence to set direction, manage risk, and provide effective oversight. When boards lose confidence in their own role, they invite chaos. When they fail to lead, they leave the administration and community vulnerable to missteps.

Healthy debate is not dysfunction; it’s how good governance works. The real danger comes when boards avoid deliberation, shy away from transparency, or operate without clear priorities.

That vacuum leads to confusion and unnecessary conflict. It also creates an opening for louder, more ideological voices to dominate the conversation — voices that want to bring national culture wars into local classrooms, question professional educators, and erode support for public education itself.

Between us, we bring deep experience in law, communications, negotiation, strategic planning and community leadership. We are not running to dismantle the system, but to strengthen it — by restoring accountability, elevating standards of leadership, and ensuring decisions are made transparently.

This Friday (October 24, 7 p.m.), it’s baseball.

ESPN Films screens the E60 documentary, “Southpaw: The Life and Legacy of Jim Abbott,” about the life and career of the legendary pitcher.

And Abbott himself will be there.

Produced by Westporter Jeremy Schaap, it tells the story of the man who was born without a right hand yet rose to Major League Baseball stardom. Most impressively, he threw a no-hitter with the New York Yankees.

After the film, Abbott will be on our stage and in conversation with Schaap, ESPN senior feature producer Mike Farrell, and Westporter Dave Briggs. They’ll talk about life, overcoming adversity, and baseball.

The US national soccer team cruised into the knockout stage at the Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco yesterday, with a 5-2 win over China. It was the Americans’ second group win in 2 games.

Staples senior Natalie Chudowsky came on as a substitute in the 64th minute. She played the final 26 minutes.

“Seat At The Selectman’s Table”: Personalities, Not Policies

At noon yesterday, the 3 first selectman candidates sat on stage at the Westport Library, for a formal debate.

Six hours later, they returned. This time they sat at a table on the Trefz Forum floor — the same level as the audience.

This time they chatted about their lives in Westport, their families, their most difficult conversations and decisions, and their greatest accomplishments as husbands and fathers.

It was all about personalities, not policies.

Plus, each of them brought a dish to share, for dinner.

The event was the first-ever “Seat at the Selectman’s Table.”

Part of the Library’s Common Ground Initiative — which brings people together through careful, constructive dialogue — and organized and moderated by “06880”‘s Dan Woog — it offered a different perspective into the hearts and minds of the 3 men vying for Westport’s top spot.

Woog’s first question was why each candidate brought the dish they did.

Don O’Day said that his wife Toni is from Italy. He loved her parents’ eggplant parmigiana.

David Rosenwaks brought his favorite meats and cheeses from Gaetano’s (but no pork, as he was raised kosher).

Kevin Christie baked pumpkin bread, which he always enjoyed making with his mother.

From then on, the candidates answered questions picked from a bowl. They included:

What in your life are you most proud of? And least?

O’Day mentioned his family life, including 3 sons and 1 granddaughter. He regretted losing time with them through work, as they grew up.

Rosenwaks had his first child at 39, his second at 41. He spoke about the highs and lows of forging his own path, in finance and then music.

Christie is most proud of where his family is now, but rues not taking enough time to look back and appreciate his life.

What was your most difficult conversation with someone?

For Rosenwaks, it was when his Israeli father asked if Rosenwaks’ wife — who was Presbyterian — would convert to Judaism. She said yes, but “it was hard.”

Christie mentioned how tough it is to fire someone in business. “You’re taking an opportunity and a life away. At times it is necessary, but difficult.”

O’Day agreed with Christie, and recalled the need to take away his father’s car keys — and independence. O’Day framed it in the context of “being around for your grandchildren.”

If you had to live anywhere outside Westport, where would it be?

None of the candidates want to leave. But Christie and O’Day would return to New York City. Rosenwaks might head to France, where he lived while studying (and went to soccer camp as a teenager).

What is Westport’s hidden gem?

For Rosenwaks, it’s Burying Hill Beach. Christie loves watching great sunsets over his garden — though he has little time to enjoy them this fall, while campaigning. O’Day favors Longshore Sailing School, where all 3 of his sons worked while in high school.

Who do you most admire in Westport — not for their accomplishments, but the way they carry themselves?

Christie cited his wife Gina, who not only commutes to New York, but serves as Coleytown PTA president and “helps make my campaign exist.”

O’Day said he could not run without his wife Toni’s support. She goes to all of his events — and tells him to ignore the backlash.

Rosenwaks hailed Miggs Burroughs, the graphic artist and photographer who helps the Arts Advisory Committee, and everyone else, no questions asked.

What is your proudest achievement as a husband and father?

Rosenwaks said it was spending time with his daughters, and supporting his wife during her acting career.

For Christie, it was the decision to step back from his professional career, to have time with his children.

O’Day recalled the day his son came to his office to talk about a personal problem. He added, “After 43 years of marriage, I’m still trying to do better with Toni.”

If you did not pursue the career you did, what path might your life have taken?

At age 10 in Vermont, Christie wanted to be a garbage man. When his family moved to Albany, different opportunities opened up.

O’Day had a summer job at Jones Beach. He thought about restaurant management while in college, but realized how long and difficult those hours are.

Rosenwaks first hoped to be a New York Mets centerfielder. He then wanted to be in music — and had an opportunity with Paul Shaffer – but his father urged him to go into finance.

Which 4 people — living or dead — would you invite to a dinner party?

O’Day: Robert F. Kennedy (“the father, not the son”), Jesus, Thomas Edison, George Washington.

Rosenwaks: Roberto Clemente, Jim Morrison, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen.

Christie: His mentor who died in September, his wife and children (“because having dinner together these days is rare”).

What were your discussions with your family about your decision to run? 

Christie’s wife was more excited at the start than he was. His family was very supportive — as they had been when he ran for the Board of Education.

O’Day’s oldest son was “all in.” The middle one thought it was a good idea, but wondered if O’Day really wanted to commit to the work. His youngest son was a “hard no” — but is now the campaign’s social media director. His wife was uncertain, but has become his biggest supporter.

Rosenwaks’ 9-year-old did not want him to win, worrying they would have less time together. His 7-year-old “fashionista” was thrilled; she thought she would get lots of “stuff” if he won. He has taught his children and their friends about the importance of elections.

Who has been the biggest influence on your character?

O’Day’s father — who did not finish college, but raised 6 children — would see someone misbehaving and say, “No class.” O’Day thinks about that whenever he sees someone acting badly.

Rosenwaks’ mother was 24 when he was born. He does not know how she was able to raise him at such a young age, but realized her impact when he won a pair of citizenship awards in elementary school.

Christie’s mother, a teacher, taught him the importance of dong the right thing. She stressed the need to treat others the way you want to be treated.

The final question: What do you most admire about the candidates you are running against?

Rosenwaks cited O’Day’s “even-handedness,” and called Christie “a good listener.”

Christie said that Rosenwaks was “fun to be around, kind and thoughtful.” He admires O’Day’s “dedication,” especially on the Long Lots School Building Committee, and respects the amount of time he dedicates to the town.

O’Day echoed Christie’s mention of Rosenwaks’ “magnetic personality, his ability to pivot, and how his eyes light up when talking about his daughters. He recalled how proud Christie was to introduce O’Day to his son, and concluded, “if you’re a good dad, you are a good person.”

Selectpersons Debate: Minor Differences, No Bombshells

There were no fireworks or personal attacks at today’s selectman’s debate.

David Rosenwaks, Kevin Christie and Don O’Day — the 3 candidates for first selectman — and Amy Wistreich and Andrea Moore, running mates of the latter two — agreed on the need for proactive planning and collaboration.

All cited their experience, in a variety of endeavors.

And all agreed on the need for a parking deck at the Baldwin lot.

The Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce event at the Westport Library drew a crowd of about 150. with more watching on livestream. They listened to calm, reasoned answers to questions from Chamber director Matthew Mandell.

Differences were in emphasis, not policy. O’Day and Moore — running on the Republican ticket — cited their managerial experience, both professionally and on 2 school building committees and as current 2nd selectwoman, respectively.

Democrats Christie and Wistreich noted their work sitting on 2 elected boards — Education and the Planning & Zoning Commission, respectively.

Rosenwaks cited his Independent Party endorsement, being beholden to neither party.

There was some daylight between them regarding Westport’s relationship with the state Department of Transportation’s involvement in the Post Road project, the Cribari Bridge and a new maintenance facility on the Sherwood Island Connector.

Christie noted the Democrats’ relationships with the governing party in Hartford. O’Day and Rosenwaks countered with their abilities to work across the aisle.

Both Rosenwaks and Wistreich said that on “Day 1,” their administrations would hold meetings with stakeholders in DOT projects.

All agreed that the $400 million-plus capital plan is not set in stone. O’Day was the only candidate to set priorities — Coleytown Elementary School and the Longshore clubhouse and Inn — while Wistreich floated the idea of a townwide facilities manager, to also oversee Board of Ed assets.

There was agreement on the need for some kind of development in Saugatuck — though not at the scale proposed by ROAN Ventures for the ill-fated Hamlet project — and the importance of meetings with the developer (who has options on the property),

Wistreich called it “a generational project that will transform this town forever. And Westport is not for sale.”

Moore agreed with her rival for second selectwoman. “This is such an emotional project. If we don’t talk, and get the grown-ups in the room together, we will continue to get nothing done.”

Rosenwaks cited Darien as an example of a public/private partnership that works for development, while O’Day said he preferred private development in Saugatuck.

In the area of state mandates for affordable housing, all agreed on the need for solutions. They praised State Representative Jonathan Steinberg for voting against HB 5002, which would have taken local control away from zoning near transportation hubs. They also hailed Westport’s Affordable Housing Fund (though, as Moore noted, its current $1.5 million will not go far).

Christie said, “We want more control — and credit for what we’re doing.”

The only applause in the 90-minute session came during a discussion of downtown parking, when Wistreich said, “It’s time to stop taking about Parker Harding, and do something.”

All the candidates had previously voiced support for a parking deck, and urged action by the Downtown Plan Implementation Committee. Christie advocated for businesses to be represented on that body. Moore noted that some had been on it yet not participated, but that Massimo Tullio, owner of Massi Co, has just been added.

The final questions were about the Community Gardens, and climate change.

O’Day said that Parks & Recreation director Erik Barbieri is working on a garden site, and that as first selectman he would support the director.

Christie said, “Amy and I would have brought everyone together, at the beginning. That would have saved a lot of time.”

As for sea rise, flood mitigation and other environmental concerns, O’Day noted, “You can’t manage what you can’t measure.” Data, he said, would lead to “action, and an embrace of science.”

Roundup: Early Voter Statistics, Shonda Rhimes & Craig Melvin, Yard Waste Hours …

Early voting began yesterday. That’s a recent innovation — in Connecticut, anyway.

But there’s something even newer, in this election.

For the first time, local candidates have access to a “Voter CheckList” website. In past elections, it’s been limited to state parties.

The website allows party officials and candidates to see — in real time — the names of everyone who has already voted, either early or by returning an absentee ballot.

Just as crucially, they can see who has not yet voted.

Here are yesterday’s statistics, as of 6 p.m.

  • Total votes so far: 237. That includes 175 in-person voters on Day 1, and 62 absentee ballots. That’s 1.25% of all eligible voters.
  • Voters so far include 145 Democrats, 32 Republicans and 59 unaffiliated. That total is 1 short of the 237 total — presumably because 1 voter is a member of another party.
  • Those who voted yesterday represent 1.82% of the 7,955 eligible Democratic voters, 0.96% of the 3,341 eligible Republican voters, and 0.78% of the 7,583 eligible unaffiliated voters.

Turnout is crucial. In past local elections, Westport’s turnout has been less than 50%.

If you don’t vote, you should not be allowed to complain.

If campaigns use the Voter CheckList tool, they can target their supporters from now through Election Day.

And urge them to vote.

StoryFest 2025 wound up with a storied event. The award-winning producer and Shondaland visionary chatted with the NBC “Today” anchor about the 10th anniversary of her best-selling memoir, “Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun, and Be Your Own Person.”

Tickets included a 10th-anniversary hardcover edition of  “Year of Yes,” with updates and new chapters.

It’s autumn.

Which means that Westport’s yard waste site needs extended Saturday hours.

They begin this week (October 25), from 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Regular hours return December 1.

Westport residents with valid proof of residency may dump up to six 30-gallon bags, or similar-sized containers full of leaves, without a fee at the facility (180 Bayberry Lane). Plastic bags are not allowed.

Any van, pickup, or tag-along trailer exceeding the 6-bag limit will be charged $40 per load. Any vehicle or trailer larger than a conventional pickup with a 4-foot-by-8-foot bed will be charged $90 per ton. Any vehicles with a 9-foot body or vehicles modified to significantly enlarge their factory design size will be charged $90 per ton.

Dump tickets may be purchased at Town Hall weekdays, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Longtime Westport resident Aldean Alice Duffy died Saturday peacefully at home Saturday, surrounded by family, after a long struggle with illness. She was 87.

“Deanie” graduated from Fairfield’s Roger Ludlowe High School in 1956. She married Thomas Duffy in 1958. They lived their 67 years of married life in Greens Farms.

She worked for the Southern Connecticut Telephone Company and in retail before pursuing a career with the Save The Children Foundation, where she spent decades assisting during catastrophes, and managing sponsorships and donations for children around the world.

Deanie enjoyed bowling, reading, playing cards, yard work, gardening, the beach, and time with her family at their cabin in Pea Brook, New York.

Deanie is survived by her husband; children Thomas (Tammy) of Hamilton, Colorado, Kimberly Atterbury of Marysville, Washington, Patrick (Kathrine) of Westport, and Kevin of Colorado Springs; grandchildren Melissa Soucy, Chad Duffy, Brittney Atterbury, Lindsey Atterbury, Austin Duffy, Hunter Duffy, Sadie Duffy and William Duffy-Young, and great-grandchildren Autumn and Mason Soucy.

Aldean was preceded in death by her brothers Vincent and Raymond Maliszewski, and son-in-law, Bruce Atterbury.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held this Friday (October 24, 11 a.m., St. Luke Church). Interment will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society or Save the Children.

“Where We Stand”: P&Z Candidates Look Ahead: Westport, 4 Years From Now

An informed electorate is the greatest bulwark of democracy.

Westporters understand this is a very important election. “06880” is doing our part, to help Westporters understand candidates’ perspectives on a variety of issues.

Once a week, between now and Election Day, we’re asking the men and women running for 3 important boards — Selectmen/women, Planning & Zoning, and Education — one specific question.

We’ll print their responses verbatim.

This week’s question for the Planning & Zoning Commission is:

If elected, how different will Westport look and feel at the end of your 4-year term? And how similar to today?

Michele Paquette is a candidate with endorsements from 3 organizations. She will be listed on the ballot under both the Republican Party and The Coalition for Westport. Additionally, she has earned the support of the Westport Alliance for Saugatuck. She says:

If elected, Westport will look and feel both thoughtfully evolved and reassuringly familiar by the end of my 4-year term.

I believe in progress that honors our past, development that reflects our values, and governance that listens before it decides. My goal is not to reinvent Westport, but to steward its growth with transparency and community at the center.

Let’s start with what will feel different. First and foremost, I will champion in-person forums and enhanced communication.  I will be one of 7, and seek for the Planning & Zoning Commission to make the residents feel heard and a partner in the process.

Second, Westport will begin to reflect a more balanced approach to development. I will advocate for appropriate growth that respects our town’s character while addressing real needs — reduce potential for additional congestion, maintain density, address affordable housing, environmental resilience, and economic vitality.

That means a resident focused, thoughtful update to our 10-year development plan, the zoning code to match it, and then I will follow it.  It means encouraging maintenance of our town character, adaptive reuse of existing buildings, thoughtfully evaluating development in wetlands and on the river while protecting open space. It means asking not just “what can we build?” but “what should we build — and why?”

You’ll also see a stronger alignment between planning and sustainability. I will push for zoning that supports green infrastructure and flood resilience. Westport’s natural beauty is one of its greatest assets, and we must plan with climate realities in mind. From coastal neighborhoods to inland woodlands, our policies must reflect long-term stewardship—not short-term convenience.

And finally, the tone of civic engagement will shift. I bring decades of experience in strategic leadership, stakeholder alignment, and courageous decision-making. I will foster a culture of respect, collaboration and accountability — both within the commission, and across town and state government. I will seek to help residents feel empowered, not sidelined. Disagreements will be met with dialogue, not division. We will lead with facts, listen with empathy, and act with purpose.

Now, what will remain the same? Westport’s character. Our shoreline sunsets, our vibrant arts scene, our cherished neighborhoods and schools—these will remain the heart of our town. The charm of downtown, the bustle of Compo Beach in summer, the quiet dignity of our historic districts—these will continue to define us. I will protect the essence of Westport while guiding it toward a future that is resilient, and forward-thinking.

Our commitment to excellence will also endure. Westport has long been a town of high standards — whether in education, public services or civic pride. I will uphold those standards.

In short, Westport will feel more intentional and more prepared for the future. But it will still feel like home. My leadership will be rooted in listening, learning, and leading with integrity. I’m not running to impose a vision — I’m running to elevate yours.

By the end of my term, I want residents to say: “We were heard. We were respected. And we helped shape the future of our town.”

That’s the Westport I believe in. That’s the Westport I will fight for.

The Democratic Party has endorsed Michael Cammeyer, Bre Injeski and Craig Schiavone. Schiavone is also running on the Coalition for Westport ticket, and has been endorsed by the Alliance for Westport. They say:

Four years from now, our town should remain a vibrant coastal community with the same charm and sense of belonging that make Westport such a great place to call home. Our team’s pragmatic and disciplined approach is essential to reconciling state mandates that push for dense development with our town’s commitment to thoughtful growth and environmental protection.

Our town’s interests are not advanced by P&Z commissioners acting as though the rights of private property owners to develop their land under state law can be ignored or undone by wishful thinking. Equally important, this conversation must include a realistic vision for what we strive to achieve, not only what we will protect against.

How Westport will look and feel different:

If elected, we will update Westport’s Plan of Conservation and Development to responsibly guide future development with a focus on sustainability, preservation, and right-sized growth.

By the end of our next term, our goal is to have worked collaboratively and effectively with the next first selectman’s office to advance projects that strengthen our town: re-paving downtown parking areas while preserving parking where we need it, modernizing our schools, lighting our fields (especially for our girls sports teams), approving a community garden, creating a fenced dog run, developing town-led, low-density affordable cottage clusters, implementing flood mitigation infrastructure, and establishing an updated town maintenance facility in an appropriate location.

Our team doesn’t just talk about keeping Westport vibrant; we deliver on it. If Democrats maintain our seats on the P&Z, we’ll keep championing policies that strengthen small businesses and community life, from the seasonal closure of Church Lane and expanded outdoor dining to second-floor retail and converting office space for medical uses. Each of these initiatives has been divided along party lines, and could be lost if Republicans take the majority on the P&Z.

Finally, we welcome the opportunity to work with a new administration to put Westport’s 5-Year Affordability Plan into action. With new leadership in the first selectman’s office, it’s not too late to create thoughtfully designed, low-density affordable housing, like the cottage clusters our team has already legalized through zoning reform.

We’ll keep using our planning and zoning tools to encourage housing options that diversify opportunity without overwhelming the town. By planning carefully, we can meet our state affordability goals while preserving Westport’s scale and beauty.

How Westport will stay the same:

We’ll protect the small-town feel, architectural variety, and open spaces that make Westport unique. The Saugatuck River will still be the heart of downtown. Compo Beach will still bring families together. Our neighborhoods will still have that distinct Westport mix of creativity, warmth, and pride.

Westport’s schools, arts, and community spirit are unmatched. We’ll continue to make land-use decisions that support them. That means incentivizing thoughtful density instead of massive 8-30g projects. Our record of supporting right-sized office-to-residential conversions and affordable housing for our vulnerable residents, and adaptive re-use of historic properties (like at 136 Riverside Avenue) exemplifies our commitment to smart affordable housing growth.

Just as important, we believe in transparency and public participation. We will continue to listen, work through subcommittees, and engage openly with all residents and applicants who come before us.

Our team reads every letter. We hear you. We listen. We care. We will always be honest about what the P&Z can and cannot control given state law, and we will never mislead you about the consequences of our decisions.

At the end of our 4-year term, we hope residents will feel that Westport doesn’t just look well-planned, but it feels well-planned. That traffic got a little better, local businesses a little stronger, and housing a little more inclusive, all without losing the beauty and balance that define us.

Although Sephora will replace Brooks Brothers at the “Elm & Main” shopping plaza downtown, the men’s clothiers is not leaving Westport.

The move will not come until late 2027 or early 2028, when Brooks Brothers’ lease expires. That gives them plenty of time to find a new location.

And, they assure customers, it will be somewhere in Westport.

FUN FACT: “Elm & Main” is the new (not very popular) name for what used to be called Brooks Corner, on Main Street at (duh) Elm.

But the name did not come from the store. It was developed — decades earlier — by the Brooks family. The commercial real estate company also owned the Westport News, whose offices took up much of the building.

Over the last 2 weekends — one rainy, one gorgeous — Representative Town Meeting (RTM) members volunteered for annual tulip planting.

This year, member Andrew Colabella donated 1,500 bulbs, to jump start fundraising for the Sons of the American Legion.

The multi-colored tulips come directly from the Netherlands.

This year they were planted along the entrance to Compo Beach, and at Grace Salmon Park (suggested by RTMer Nancy Kail).

That makes over 5,000 total tulip bulbs, thanks to the RTM.

Colabella thanks Colorblends in Bridgeport for their amazing inventory, Westport’s Parks & Recreation Department maintanance division for grass seed, SCA-Crowley for topsoil, and Sons of the American Legion treasurer Mark Shornick for handling funds.

After graduating from Staples High School in 2010, Raechel Alaimo worked at the Black Duck for 10 years.

She worked at a boutique salon too in Stamford, to put herself through hairdressing school.

She worked at a variety of salons, received advanced training, an spent the past couple of years at Effi’s Salon in Saugatuck.

Now she’s opened her own salon, Studio 111, as part of the Sola Salons suite at 495 Post Road East (between Autostrada and the former Humane Society).

She offers hair coloring, cutting, styling and keratin treatments. She will soon add Bellami extensions

Raechel and her clients appreciate that Sola Salons includes more than just hairstyling. The building includes professionals specializing in Botox, waxing, skin care, makeup, barbering, event styling and more.

“It’s a one-stop shop for a slew of services in a private environment, eliminating the chaos that can come with the standard salon atmosphere,” Raechel says.

The weather was great for walking this weekend.

Hundreds of Westporters (and others) turned out Saturday for the Walk ALS event, at Sherwood Island.

Fifty teams, with over 800 walkers, took to the state park paths. The total raised was over $180,000.

The New York Giants season is in full swing. Cam Skattebo is having a great season — especially last week.

But on May 24, the running back will have time to head to Westport.

He headlines a special youth football camp, sponsored by the Staples High School football program.

Former Staples High administrative assistant Lynette “Lyn” Birkmaier died Friday. She was 95, and lived in Trumbull.

The Illinois native spent 40 years in the school’s front office, including time as the principal’s assistant. She is survived by her son Gary (Lisa Laplante), grandson Karl Birkmaier, sister, Joyce and brother Paul.

“Where We Stand”: Selectman Candidates On 10-Year Capital Plan

An informed electorate is the greatest bulwark of democracy.

Westporters understand this is a very important election. “06880” is doing our part, to help Westporters understand candidates’ perspectives on a variety of issues.

Once a week, between now and Election Day, we’re asking the men and women running for 3 important boards — Selectmen/women, Planning & Zoning, and Education — one specific question.

We’ll print their responses verbatim.

The 10-year Capital Plan is lengthy, and expensive. What are your top 5 priorities – and why?

Republican Party-endorsed candidates Don O’Day and Andrea Moore say:

Westport’s current 10-year Capital Plan includes more than $400 million in proposed spending for town and school projects, not including interest on the debt. This is in addition to prior capital spending totaling $108 million, also excluding interest.

Despite this significant forecast, Westport recently received an exceptionally strong credit rating, reflecting the disciplined fiscal management of the administration, the Board of Finance, and RTM. This excellent rating helps lower our borrowing costs, allowing Westport to advance our Capital Plan efficiently and responsibly.

That said, the 10-year Capital Plan must and will be carefully re-evaluated when we take office in November.

Our Capital Priorities

We have identified 3 projects that are long overdue and will be prioritized:

1. Parker Harding Plaza – the current estimate is ~ $6 million.

The current estimate reflects a full redesign of the entire plaza and parking lot. Our immediate focus will be bringing the parking lot up to code. This will reduce the number of spaces in order to address safety and accessibility requirements. We will identify replacement parking spaces before proceeding with paving and steps to find these spaces are underway. A new parking structure in the Baldwin Lot will be an option if needed.

2. Longshore facilities – the current estimate is ~ $14 million (shed, Clubhouse, cart barn parking and surrounding area – more is planned)

The Longshore redevelopment includes our private/public partnership with the Inn at Longshore and Delamar. The first priority in the Longshore development plan is replacing the maintenance facility. While the exact size, location and specific design of the shed can be debated, the need to replace the shed is clear.

The Clubhouse at Longshore also requires immediate attention, as its current condition limits revenue potential and does not reflect the quality of one of Westport’s most valued recreational assets. Longshore is a centerpiece of Westport’s recreational offerings, and improving these facilities ensures safe, enjoyable experiences for residents of all ages.

3. Coleytown Elementary School – the current estimate is $85 million

CES is significantly overdue for replacement or major renovation. Recent roof leaks forced the closure of a kindergarten class, highlighting the urgency. Planning for CES must begin immediately, even as Long Lots and Stepping Stones construction proceeds. Westport must be able to advance multiple major projects simultaneously, and CES is too important to defer. Investing in the school safeguards the learning environment and future success of our children.

Other critical projects requiring full attention include a combined police, fire, and EMS facility, as well as flood resiliency and bridge projects.

Evaluating the Capital Plan

Once in office, we will work with the finance director, the Board of Finance, the RTM and project sponsors to review every line item in the Capital Plan. Each project will be assessed and prioritized as high, medium or low based on safety, urgency, operational need, cost escalation risk and community benefit.

This process will not be a one-time exercise. It will become part of a disciplined, transparent, annual capital forecast process to ensure Westport invests wisely and delivers results for residents. We will make every dollar of taxpayer investment count.

Looking Ahead

We must ensure that our taxes remain competitive compared to other towns in Connecticut.  It is a source of strength and adds to our property values.

By focusing on urgent needs, rigorously evaluating all projects, and maintaining transparency, we will ensure that Westport continues to thrive while managing its resources responsibly.

Independent Party-endorsed candidate David Rosenwaks says:

With more than 250 line-item capital requests presented in random order and spread over a decade, it’s difficult for all of us to grasp the logic, purpose, or prioritization behind this almost $500 million plan.

Quite frankly, I’m surprised by the lack of strategy, rationale and fiscal discipline. If we were to follow this plan as written, taxpayers could face up to a 20% increase in taxes solely due to capital expenditures. I’m perplexed by how we’ve moved from a fiscally responsible approach with stable tax rates to a proposal that would significantly burden our residents.

Westport is at an inflection point. We can continue managing from crisis to crisis, or we can pivot to a higher level of proactive planning and proficient management. I will lead with a different approach, one that produces results through vision, strategy, and disciplined execution. My thoughts and priorities are as follows:

1. Deliver a Strategic Plan

My first priority, as your first selectman, will be to launch a comprehensive, long-range strategic planning process for the town, one that aligns our initiatives, priorities and expenditures. My commitment is to have this plan completed by the end of Q1 2026.

This plan will guide our long-term tactics, including capital investments, and provide a framework for annual budget decisions. It will engage all major town bodies — the Board of Education, Board of Finance, Planning & Zoning Commission  — to assess critical issues, identify opportunities, and establish a shared vision built on clear strategic pillars. Throughout this process, residents will have full transparency and an active voice.

2. Performance and ROI

My second priority is to ensure every initiative is clearly defined, categorized, and measured for performance. We will apply proficiency and ROI metrics to make certain every tax dollar is spent wisely and delivers measurable results. My commitment is to uphold the highest standards of efficiency, effectiveness and accountability in every expenditure. This disciplined approach will allow us to evaluate initiatives and alternative approaches using clear, comparative data.

3. Informed Prioritization

With a solid strategic framework and clear performance metrics in place, we can make smart, deliberate choices about which initiatives are essential and which can wait. We will know what initiatives provide the most immediate, most cost-effective impact.  Your voice will guide these decisions — it’s about your voice, your town, your government and your choice.

4. Guiding Principles

Our guiding principles should set our strategic priorities; be straightforward and enduring:

  • Safety: Support police, fire, traffic and infrastructure to provide a secure environment for all residents.
  • Schools: Preserve our most valuable asset, our schools, both academically and structurally, avoiding crisis-driven repairs.
  • Smart and Sustainable Development: Support thoughtful growth that enhances our community’s architecture and heritage, while proactively addressing environmental concerns.
  • Parking Concerns: Support residents and merchants alike.
  • Essential and Recreational Services: Enhance the quality of life of all members of the community.

5. Leadership with Purpose

It would be easy to simply dictate a list of capital priorities; but that’s not effective leadership. My approach is strategic, inclusive, and purpose-driven. My commitment is action and results, guided by passion for this community and a shared purpose to make Westport stronger, more sustainable, and more connected.

What matters most are not the ideas I impose, but my ability to lead and unify our values, interests, and priorities. By hearing every voice, I will find our common ground. I will not seek differences, but rather areas where we can align and collaborate. It is not each of our ideologies against one another, it is all of us together protecting the quality of life, the essence of our town, and the value of our tax dollars.

The 10-Year Capital Plan is a management tool, not a substitute for a vision for Westport.

Right now, it’s a $500 million wish list of nearly 300 projects submitted by town departments, including 67 estimated to cost $1 million or more. Items range from $65,000 for a sewer pump station generator to $92.5 million for a combined police, fire and EMS headquarters.

The job of the Town’s CEO is not simply to manage the list in conjunction with the superintendent of schools. It’s to understand Westport’s needs and provide the leadership, vision and discipline to set priorities, and ask what’s missing.

As your selectmen, we will:

Lead the process. Use the forecast not as a to-do list, but as an opportunity to prioritize projects based on how they fit into a larger strategy for Westport. That means launching a full review of the forecast, collaborating with the Board of Finance, RTM, Board of Education and the public so that the order in which we tackle projects reflects what Westport needs, what we can afford, and ensures things are done properly, on time, and on budget.

Be fiscally responsible. The capital plan is funded by your tax dollars. We take that responsibility seriously and will spend wisely and only when necessary. That means no wasteful studies, and no $7 million maintenance facility in the middle of Longshore’s golf course.

Balance wants with needs. Westporters want the town to be more active, walkable and bikeable. They also want our recreational facilities and playing fields better maintained. Priorities like these aren’t fully reflected in the forecast today. We can change that.

We come to the selectmen’s office prepared for this. On the Board of Education’s Finance and Facilities Committee, I helped develop the criteria to prioritize our school district’s capital needs after witnessing the mold issues at Coleytown Middle School and Long Lots Elementary.

The BOE’s and superintendent’s focus has been on infrastructure: keeping our buildings dry and maintaining air quality by investing in the building envelope and mechanicals, and these are reflected in the forecast. We’ve seen what happens when those aren’t prioritized: costly renovations and new construction. That’s a lesson I’ll carry to Town Hall.

Our current roles on the Board of Education and Planning & Zoning Commission give us comprehensive insight into the areas that need the most attention. With this, plus what we have learned during our campaign in talking to Westporters, town staff, board and commission members, and local businesses, we’re prepared with a preliminary list of our investment priorities, focused on our infrastructure. They include:

  • Fixing the problems that have taken too long: including Parker Harding and downtown parking.
  • Schools: We’re committed to ensuring that Long Lots/Stepping Stones comes in on time and on budget, planning ahead for Coleytown Elementary, and maintaining our schools to extend their useful lives.
  • Efficiency: Ending the cycle of “study and shelve” spending by using local expertise to act
  • Sustainability: Flood resiliency, and preserving open space when considering projects, including a sensible solution for the Parks & Recreation Department maintenance facility that protects the golf course at Longshore.
  • Securing grants: Aggressively explore state and federal funding and resources to support projects while reducing taxpayer burdens.

Together we bring decades of experience in finance, corporate strategy, land use, and construction. We know how to manage risk, sequence and execute complex projects, and ask the right questions before the taxpayer foots the bill.

Fiscal responsibility isn’t just about cutting costs. It’s about making smart, transparent, and forward-looking decisions — informed by our community — that strengthen Westport and respect both taxpayers and tax dollars.
