[OPINION] 4 Days Later, Snow Hazards Abound

“06880” has been snowed under, by residents writing about the aftermath of Sunday’s weather.

Longtime Westport resident Jamie Walsh says:

Driving down Main Street this morning, free of parked cars and people, I could not believe the condition of sidewalks, crosswalks, and parking spaces downtown and elsewhere throughout town.

Many pedestrian areas remain uncleared or inadequately treated, creating hazardous conditions for residents, visitors, seniors, and anyone with mobility challenges.

Slippery crosswalks and snow-covered curb cuts force pedestrians into the street, while icy parking spaces increase the risk of falls the moment someone exits their vehicle.

Beyond the obvious safety risks, this represents a significant liability issue. When commonly used public walkways are not properly maintained, injuries become far more likely — and with them, potential claims against both property owners and the Town.

A single preventable fall can result in serious injury, costly medical bills, and legal exposure that far outweighs the effort required to clear these areas promptly.

Westport prides itself on being a walkable, welcoming downtown. That reputation depends on basic winter maintenance being treated as a priority, not an afterthought.

Timely snow removal and proper ice mitigation are not just matters of convenience — they are essential public safety responsibilities. Addressing these conditions promptly protects pedestrians, supports local businesses, and reduces unnecessary risk for everyone.

Snow Day!

Some Westporters spent today digging out from yesterday’s 14-inch snowfall.

Some spent it walking outside, admiring the scenery.

Snow Alert! What To Know Beyond Buying Milk And Bread

Town officials are closely monitoring the major winter storm forecast.

It’s expected to begin Sunday morning (January 25), with hazardous conditions to continue into Monday.

Models indicate 12 to 18 inches of snowfall across southern New England. Wind gusts of 20 to 30 miles an hour may result in blowing snow and periods of near-zero visibility. The snow is expected to be light and powdery, so widespread power outages are not anticipated at this time.

Fire Chief Nick Marsan says, “This storm has the potential to significantly impact travel and daily activities. Now is the time for residents to prepare, complete errands early, and plan to stay off the roads once snowfall begins so emergency and public works crews can operate safely.”

Department of Human Resources director Elaine Daignault adds, “Extreme cold can be dangerous, especially for seniors, residents without reliable heat, and those facing hardship.

“Our team is ready to help connect residents with warming centers and other critical resources. Please check your furnaces now, and schedule fuel deliveries ahead of the storm. If you or someone you know needs assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out.”

Westport residents experiencing hardship due to cold weather can contact Human Services at 203-341-1050 now and tomorrow, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Westport warming centers include:

For shelter needs outside of warming center hours, or for overnight accommodations, call 211.

Public safety recommendations include:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel Sunday afternoon through Monday morning.
  • Allow Public Works crews space to clear roadways safely.
  • After the storm, clear a 3-foot radius around nearby fire hydrants.
  • Prepare for extended cold by checking heating systems and supplies.
  • Monitor official Westport channels for updates.

Winter Wonderland … Once More

One “06880” reader calls this “the most beautiful winter ever.”

Bingo!

We’ve had several wonderful (and non-overwhelming) snowfalls.

Yesterday’s was the most gorgeous of all.

And today it’s even prettier.

The snow still clings to trees and bushes. It glistens in the bright sunlight. It reminds us of how much beauty there is in the world.

I can’t recall a “day after” when readers continued to send such lovely images. But they keep coming. Here are a few more:

Another Wonderland

What a winter!

Westport has been blessed with a series of weekend snowfalls.

They’re light enough to not cause major disruptions.

But heavy enough to create beautiful scenes.

Today was another photographers’ delight.

All over town, residents were out snapping — and sending their shots to “06880.”

Here are some favorites.
