Roger Muchnick’s Memorial

The newest memorial on Veterans Green honors Lance Cpl. Roger Muchnick.

The display — across from Town Hall, in front of a plaque dedicated to Westporters killed in World War II — includes flowers, flags, candles, photos from Muchnick’s football career, and Staples Wreckers memorabilia.

The memorial was created by Alison and Greg Fisher. Monica and Bill Vaughn, Caroline Kelly and Amie Waiter added to it.

The Fishers also planted flowers for Roger by the Staples lacrosse field flagpole, and at Compo Beach.

Muchnick — a Marine who served 2 tours in Afghanistan, and died last Monday in a mortar accident in Nevada — will be honored this Friday (March 29) with a funeral service at St. Ann’s Church in Lenox, Massachusetts.

Westport Marine Killed In Nevada Mortar Blast

Westporter Roger Muchnick was one of 7 Marines killed Monday, when a mortar round accidentally exploded during training in Nevada. Several other Marines were also injured.

Muchnick — a 2008 graduate of Staples High School — had served 2 tours in Afghanistan.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Marines involved in Monday’s accident are part of the Second Marine Division based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

The newspaper said one Marine died at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, after being flown by helicopter from the accident site, Hawthorne Army Depot, 100 miles southeast of Reno.

Muchnick’s Facebook page was initially filled with encouraging comments, such as, “You’ll pull through.”

Today those comments turned to “Rest in Peace, brother.”
