Westport Marine Killed In Nevada Mortar Blast

Westporter Roger Muchnick was one of 7 Marines killed Monday, when a mortar round accidentally exploded during training in Nevada. Several other Marines were also injured.

Muchnick — a 2008 graduate of Staples High School — had served 2 tours in Afghanistan.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Marines involved in Monday’s accident are part of the Second Marine Division based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

The newspaper said one Marine died at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, after being flown by helicopter from the accident site, Hawthorne Army Depot, 100 miles southeast of Reno.

Muchnick’s Facebook page was initially filled with encouraging comments, such as, “You’ll pull through.”

Today those comments turned to “Rest in Peace, brother.”

The members of the military are without question some of the greatest people to grace the planet. I am profoundly grateful for their service. It is an immeasurable tragedy when one is lost. My heartfelt sympathies go out to all his loved ones.

  7. I find it odd that this has not been verified yet…..

I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.”

  13. My condolences to the Muchnicks and all who knew him.

Does anyone know about anything being done in Roger’s memory? A service or even a fund for donations being set up?
