Roundup: The Moth, Chamber Festival, Adult Drivers …

The other day, Jill Johnson Mann was listening to Alison Stewart’s “All Of It” on WNYC.

A request went out for callers to share unique 60-second New York stories, for a “Moth” segment.

Jill — the multi-talented writer/Triple Threat Academy co-director — quickly rehearsed a story.

She timed it, pulled into a parking lot, and called in. She told the screener her story — it took “59.9 seconds,” Jill said — and soon was on the air.

“With no pen or paper, I prayed for speed-talking and memory skills, while my heart raced,” she says.

She nailed it.

Click here to listen (it starts at 14:20).

(Jill says, “Thank you Mahfuz, the star of the story. His name and phone number are still in our scrapbook from that era.” After hearing her tale, you’ll know why.)

The Westport Orchestra Chamber Festival — where the Staples High School, and Bedford and Coleytown Middle School chamber orchestras all come together — was always special.

But COVID canceled the event. It had not happened again — until Tuesday night.

That made it extra special — particularly for the seniors, the only “veterans.”

The last time they performed in the Chamber Festival, they were in 6th grade.

Roundup: Duke Ellington’s Jazz, Paul Newman’s Apartment, Marcy Sansolo’s Toy Drive …

Jazz lovers packed the Westport Library last night, for a tribute to Duke Ellington.

Roger Kaufman’s Old School Review brought together the Smithsonian Museum’s Dr. John Edward Hasse, an Ellington expert; the New York All Star Big Band, and vocalist Audrey Martells.

It was a powerful evening, filling the Trefz Forum with all that jazz.

Marcy Sansolo’s “What Up Westport” Facebook page is fun, quirky and popular.

Marcy has created a great community there. And part of celebrating the town is giving back.

Recently, Marcy invited Westporters to show up at the Imperial Avenue parking lot on a Saturday morning, with gifts for kids who need them.

Plenty did.

Marcy calls it a “social experiment.” I call it “one more reason to appreciate this town, and the very generous people in it.”

Bottoms Up! Craig Melvin Tees Off On Colorectal Cancer

Craig Melvin has accomplished a lot in 45 years.

The “Today” show anchor and co-host has covered political conventions and presidential inaugurations. He has interviewed Bill Clinton, Joe Biden, Nikki Haley, John Kerry, Mike Pompeo and Condeleezza Rice. He has reported on mass shootings and police shootings. He has covered 6 Super Bowls, and 5 Olympics — including the most recent, in Paris.

But, the Westport resident says, nothing in his professional life compares with the honor and satisfaction he feels from the Bottoms Up Invitational.

That’s the 2-day entertainment and golf event he and his wife, Fox Sports NFL and NASCAR reporter Lindsay Czarniak, organize and host each year.

Craig Melvin and Lindsay Czarniak (right) with “Today” colleagues Carson Daly and Dylan Dreyer. at last year’s Bottoms Up Invitational.

This year’s 3rd annual concert/tournament/and more is set for this Sunday and Monday (September 15-16).

It’s dedicated to Craig’s brother, Lawrence Meadows. He died 3 years ago, less than 3 years after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer. He was 43 years old.

How great is the Bottoms Up Invitational?

Sunday night (6 p.m., Total Mortgage Arena, Bridgeport) features Branford Marsalis, Kristian Bush (Sugarland), Emerson Hart (Tonic), Drew Copeland (Sister Hazel), Edwin McCain (singer, songwriter and guitarist), and Javier Colon (“The Voice”), plus Ray Boudreaux, Eric Paslay, Chris Barron, Perston Pohl, Dan Tyminski, Sean Mackin, Patrick Davis and Lauren Jenkins.

There’s a full concert, plus dinner, an open bar, celebrity mingling, a live auction, and an after-party.

Great music, at Bottoms Up.

That’s just the warm-up.

On Monday (Brooklawn Country Club, Fairfield), golfers spend a day on the course, with a group of celebrities.

They include — in addition to all the performers — Westport actor Stephanie Szostak, Willie Geist, Hilton Carter, Debbe Dunning, Corey Miller, Rutledge Wood, Tyrone Corbin, Alex English, Jimmy Roberts and Dylan Dreyer.

Plus, of course, Craig Melvin and Lindsay Czarniak.

All proceeds go to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance. The non-profit advocates for screening, helps patients navigate treatment, and funds research. Craig is a proud board member.

In its first 2 years, Bottoms Up has raised over $2.1 million.

Raising awareness of colorectal cancer is not easy. “People don’t like to talk about colons, rectums, or blood in their stool,” Craig says.

But it’s the second most common cause of cancer deaths for men and women are combined. It’s expected to cause over 53,000 deaths this year alone.

(I should note here that “Bottoms Up” may be the best name ever for a colorectal fundraiser that also involves an open bar.)

When his brother died, Craig did a couple of segments on “Today.” But he and his wife wanted to do more.

A South Carolina native, Craig knew of Darius Rucker’s “Monday After The Masters” celebrity pro-am golf tournament. Hosted by Hootie & the Blowfish in Myrtle Beach following the annual golf event, it raises millions of dollars for children’s educational programs, and the state’s junior golf program.

“It’s a great idea. I ripped it off,” Craig admits.

The same people who run Rucker’s show do this one.

It’s a win-win, on so many levels. Everyone has a ton of fun — including the post-party karaoke, when “people who think they can sing, actually try to.”

It’s a reunion of sorts for Craig. Plenty of family members attend. This year, for the first time, his brother’s 2 children will speak.

Craig Melvin, Lindsay Czarniak and their children, in their Westport home. (Photo courtesy of WestportMoms)

It even gives an economic boost to Bridgeport. “We wanted to keep this local,” Craig notes. “This is a great venue, and we’re giving back to the community.”

The community is sure giving back to Craig, and the Colorectal Cancer Alliance.

“I’m amazed at the generosity of friends, strangers, and corporations large and small,” Craig says.

Impressively, nearly everyone who signed on the first year returned last year. Now they’re back for the third event.

The concert, reception and golf outing is more important than anything he’s done on the air, Craig says.

“I know I couldn’t do this without my professional career,” he says.

“But when I’m dead and gone, people won’t talk about a 7:30 a.m. segment I did on the ‘Today’ show.

“I hope they’ll talk about what kind of dad I’ve been, what kind of husband and brother, and what I’ve done with my life.”

And if they drink a toast to Craig Melvin, they’re sure to say: “Bottom’s Up!”

Roundup: Parker Harding Petition, Chris Paul & Lindsay Czarniak, Verso Vinyl …

A petition signed by 64 electors has been submitted to the Town Clerk, and Westport Representative Town Meeting moderator Jeff Wieser.

The petitioners — 3 times as many as required — say:

In the interest of having a full and transparent public discussion on the Downtown Plan Implementation Committee’s  goals, process and proposed plan for Parker Harding, we request that the RTM add to its September 5, 2023 agenda the following item:

A review of the DPIC’s goals, process and proposed plan for Parker Harding, to be led by the lead petitioner, with an invitation to the Chair of the DPIC to present if desired, with time reserved for RTM member and public comments following the review.

Petition organizer John McCarthy says, “This is not a step we wanted to take. But we do so to make sure the voices of concerned citizens and impacted merchants are heard.

“The RTM is the public body which most fully represents all the people in town. Letting that body hear, first hand, how people feel about the plan is vital at this stage, before it is set in stone and presented as a yes/no decision to Planning & Zoning, the Board of Finance and ultimately the RTM.

“Following the last DPIC meeting,  which included constructive comments from more than 30 members of the public that attended, the DPIC has decided to ignore all of those comments and is pushing ahead with the original plan, which is to spend $6 million, remove over 40 parking spaces and get rid of the vital cut- through road in Parker Harding. We can do better than this.”

The RTM petition follows one on Change.org, opposing the proposed elimination by the DPIC of the Parker Harding Plaza cut-through lane from Main Street to the Post Road, and the reduction of 44 parking spaces.

That petition was signed by over 1,000 residents.

Chris Paul appears (virtually) at the Westport Library tonight (Tuesday, June 27, 8 p.m.).

The basketball star discusses his life, and new memoir, with journalist, FOX Sports anchor and Westport resident Lindsay Czarniak.

The event will be livestreamed and recorded as part of her podcast, “Lunch with Lindsay.”

After the conversation, members of the audience can ask questions. Autographed copies of Paul’s “61” book will be on sale.

Czarniak tells “06880”: “Human connections are so important. I’m so excited for the audience to get a chance to see and interact with Chris Paul because his story is so impactful and he relates it so well. He is still one of the biggest names in the NBA and he has so much to share.

“I read his book cover to cover. There were so many different layers. He has so much perspective. To be able to talk to him with an audience of kids and adults will be powerful. The fact that he is starting over with a brand new team — one of the strongest in the NBA — makes this even more interesting.”

Paul’s fans are one target audience. So, she says, are anyone interested in hearing a story that goes “way beyond the basketball court. I laughed and cried reading his book because he related his experiences in such a masterful way.”

Interestingly, Czarniak was about to interview Paul for her podcast, when she learned he had been traded to the Golden State Warriors 90 minutes earlier.

“Seeing him still processing the whole thing was pretty cool,” she says.

Joan Harper died peacefully at The Greens at Cannondale in Wilton last week, surrounded by her family. She was 92.

The Bridgeport native worked in retail before landing a job as a secretary at Sikorsky Aircraft. She met her husband Jim there.

They moved to Westport in 1960, and raised their children here. Once they were grown, Joan worked as an administrative assistant at Hall-Brooke Hospital.

Joan was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles, and watched old black and white movies. She was an excellent cook, specializing in Hungarian dishes.

She is survived by her son Jim (Karen) of Oxford; daughter Susan Kowalsky (Daryle) of Westport; grandchildren Harley and Barrett Kowalsky, and Jessica and Caitlin Giorgio (Stefano); great-grandson, Hudson Giorgio, and brother Richard Donnelly of Stratford. She was predeceased by her husband, and sister Barbara Fritz.

The family thanks The Greens at Cannondale for their kindness, compassion and care, and her caregiver and friend Marjorie Reid for her love and support.

Chris Paul’s Next Shot: Westport Library

Chris Paul’s next appearance is at the Westport Library.

The basketball (and State Farm) star will discuss his life — and his new memoir “61: Life Lessons from Papa, On and Off the Court,” an ode to his grandfather and family — with journalist, FOX Sports anchor and Westport resident Lindsay Czarniak.

The free event is set for June 27 (8 p.m.). Chris will join virtually, with Lindsay in person. The event will be livestreamed and recorded as part of her podcast, “Lunch with Lindsay.”

After the conversation, members of the audience will have the opportunity to ask Paul questions. Priority will go to children and teenagers at the Library. Copies of “61” will also be for sale.

Chris Paul

“I can’t wait for people to see this side of Chris Paul,” Lindsay says.

“I love uncovering the experiences, things, people that connect us all, and I’m excited to bring this podcast to life for a night and give kids in the community a chance to hear from someone they look up to.

“His play on the court speaks for itself. But I’m especially pumped because Chris’ story about his inspiration to be the best basketball player he can be is much broader than sports. It’s about the human connection and inspiration. I think we can all relate to that.”

The event is a partnership between the Library, Westport Weston Family YMCA, Y’s Men of Westport/Weston, and “06880.”

An All-America high school player in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, hPaul gained national attention when he made a run at the state high school scoring record, just 5 days after his grandfather died of a heart attack during a robbery at the service station he owned. Paul’s last attempt before coming out of the game was a free throw that he missed intentionally — ensuring he would finish with 61 points, the same age as his grandfather. It was 6 points shy of the state record.

Chris Paul will be in conversation with Lindsay Czarniak.

Paul starred at nearby Wake Forest University. He was the 4th overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets. He has enjoyed a great career with the Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder and now Phoenix Suns.

The 2006 NBA Rookie of the Year was the first player in league history to register 20,000 career points and 10,000 career assists, records since reached only by LeBron James. Paul is a 12-time All-Star. He won 2 Olympic gold medals with Team USA, in 2008 and 2012, and was named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.

Lindsay Czarniak is an award-winning sportscaster. She anchored SportsCenter for 6 years and has also served as a FOX NFL sideline reporter, CBS SRX racing host, and studio host for NBC’s Summer and Winter Olympic Games coverage.

Click here to register for a seat at the Library event. You can order “61” through the same link.

=======================================================

The world knows Lindsay Czarniak as a Fox Sports anchor and reporter.

Westporters know her as our neighbor.

Westport Weston Family YMCA members know her as a fellow cardio fitness class member. Instructor Ashlee Grieb is a longtime friend.

The other day, Lindsay posted a story to her 180,000 Instagram followers. She described how Ashlee introduced a song requested by Jane Laska, a fellow group member.

Jane came to the US from Ukraine years ago, as an exchange student. She fell in love with a man from Alabama, and married him. They live here now, where she’s raising a family.

But her own family, and many friends, remain in Ukraine.

Ashlee then played a song — “Good Evening, We Are From Ukraine” — as a way to support Jane. And she added her own choreography.

It was a special moment, for Ashlee and Jane.

It was special enough for Lindsay to post about it. It already has over 10,000 likes. Click below to see for yourself. (Hat tip: Julie Maciejewski)

In a town filled with volunteer opportunities, myTeamTriumph stands out.

The program pairs children, teens and adults with disabilities (“captains”) with volunteers (“angels”) who help them participate in triathlons and road races. In those events, everyone truly is a winner.

The next big event is the Westport Young Woman’s League’s Minute Man 10K and 5K Runs, and 5K Walk, on April 30.

MyTeamTriumph always looks for more captains (special needs athletes). They’re also short of angels (volunteer runners). This is their first time participating in the Minute Man.

They’re excited to provide an opportunity for people with special needs (and their families) to have increased visibility, and be involved in a great community event.

There is no cost. Angels can be any ability of runner or jogger.

Captains and angels can click here to sign up. MyTeamTriumph will take care of race registration.

In June, 22 Staples High School students will graduate with high honors. The distinction goes to those with a GPA in the top 4% of the graduating class.

Principal Stafford Thomas says, “This class is extremely talented. The most
astonishing aspect is that these students were involved in a number of
extracurricular activities and various aspects of school life which took a great deal of time, focus and concentration outside of the classroom as well.

We were lucky to have had them for 4 years, and we will no doubt hear about their next great achievements in the years to come.”

High honor graduates include: Emma Alcyone, Natalie Bandura, Gregory Beal, Zachary Bishop, Michael Brody, Oliver Clachko, Sabrina Didner, Erin Durkin, Matthew Genser, Alexandra Maskoff, Aidan Mermagen, Gabriella Messenger,

Roundup: Craig Melvin, Car Show, Circle Of Friends …

=================================================

Fathers Day is June 20. Which makes a perfect tie-in for Craig Melvin.

The NBC “Today” show anchor — and Westport resident — has just written a new book: Pops: Learning to Be a Son and a Father.

On Thursday, June 17 (7 p.m., in-person and via Zoom) he’ll discuss it — along with fatherhood, addiction and resiliency — in a Westport Library program. He’s got the perfect co-host too: his wife, Lindsay Czarniak. She’s a sportscaster and NFL sideline report for Fox Sports, after 6 years with ESPN.

Melvin calls his book more an investigation than a memoir. It’s an opportunity to better understand his father; to interrogate his family’s legacy of addiction and despair, but also transformation and redemption, and to explore the challenges facing all dads.

Pops also includes tales of the inspiring fathers Melvin has met reporting his “Dads Got This” series on “Today.”

Click here to register, either in-person or via Zoom. Copies of Pops are available for ordering and pickup at the library, or for shipping.

Speaking of Fathers Day: Here’s a great event for dads (and their kids) (and spouses).

Westport PAL is sponsoring a car show on June 20 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m., railroad station parking lot near Railroad Place and Franklin Street). In addition to cool cars, there’s food and raffle prizes.

Tickets are $15 each. But kids — that is, anyone under 12 — are free. Hey, this is the PAL: Even on Father’s Day, they’re all about the kids.

Circle of Friends is a great group. Young volunteers join children and adults with special needs in an array of social programs and weekly play dates.

On June 23 (Beth Israel Chabad, Norwalk, 6:30 p.m.), an evening of recognition will honor more than 150 teen volunteers.

Special honors go to Staples and Weston High School seniors Benjamin Clachko, Mushka Stone, Harley Bonn, Rebecca Ronai and Lina Singh, for their combined 3,000 “Friendship Hours.”

There’s no better place than at Homes with Hope’s “Stand-up for Comedy” fundraiser. Set for this Saturday (June 12, 8 p.m.), it’s a livestreamed event with 4 fantastic comedians — and for one of the best non-profits in Fairfield County.

See the link below for comedian details. Then click here for tickets.

And finally … Patrick Sky died last month. A folk singing/songwriting contemporary of Dave Van Ronk, Buffy Sainte-Marie and others in the Greenwich Village 1960’s scene, he never achieved their fame. But albums like “Songs That Made America Famous” remain cult classics. Of Irish and Native American ancestry, he mastered the very difficult uilleann pipes late in his career. Roundup: Vaccine, Joe Duffy, Wheels2U …

===============================================

Yesterday’s vaccine clinic in the Staples High School fieldhouse was a rousing success.

Over 500 educators from Westport, Weston and the Easton/Redding district received doses. The health professionals were on top of their game; our Community Emergence Response Team kept things running smoothly. Next Wednesday’s clinic should cover the first dose for the rest of the school staff who want it.

Speaking of the vaccine:

I was all set for my first dose at Stamford Hospital next Tuesday. But a pinched nerve in my back last week laid me up — and on prednisone.

I was warned to delay the vaccine until I’d been off it for a week. So yesterday — dreading the task — I went online for a new appointment.

The system was as agonizing as my back. Eventually I gave up and left voicemail on the VAMS system (877-918-2224). I was promised a call back.

My expectations were low. But sure enough, a few hours later a wonderful woman named Sierra called.

She won on top of her game. She was warm, efficient, even (dare I say it?) fun! She signed me up for Stamford’s Lord & Taylor parking lot March 20, and a 2nd does 4 weeks later.

Big props to Sierra, and the system. It’s not easy — but it works.

Today’s New York Times obituary of Joe Duffy notes that “his antiwar campaign for the United States Senate from Connecticut in 1970 galvanized a generation of campus liberals…. (He) later served as a cultural arbiter in the Carter and Clinton administrations and presided over two major universities.” He was 88.

It mentions one of his key supporters in his political campaigns — Westporter Paul Newman — and (though it does not note that she lived here too), his 1974 marriage to Anne Wexler. She ran his 1970 campaign, became an aide to President Carter, and then a prominent Washington political operative and lobbyist.

Positive Directions — Westport’s prevention and counseling center — is looking for a new executive director.

During COVID, the 49-year-old organization provided important mental health support to hundreds of residents. The prevention staff collaborated with town governments and other local partners, to help adolescents and families make healthy choices and decisions.

The search committee is looking for a leader with significant management experience and deep experience in the mental health. Resumes and cover letters are due by March 31 to: PositiveDirectionsEDSearch@gmail.com.

Don’t forget about Winfield Street Deli’s great “Giving Back” campaign. For every $20 check, the Post Road West coffee-and-more shop donates one meal to agencies that feed the needy.

Last year, they gave 6,000 meals. Their goal for 2021: 20,000. Stop by to help!

And finally … Bunny Wailer, the last surviving original member of the Wailers — died on Tuesday at a hospital in Jamaica. He was 73.

Bunny played percussion and harmonized. He may not have been as well known as his groupmates Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. But without Bunny, there would have been no Wailers.

Persona Of The Week: Lindsay Czarniak And Marysol Castro

This week’s “Persona Live Westport” interview featured Lindsay Czarniak of ESPN and Fox Sports talking about sports, media careers and motherhood with Marysol Castro, the first Latina PA announcer in Major League Baseball (New York Mets). Both are Westport residents. Click below to watch.

This coming Monday (March 2, 6 p.m., Westport Library Forum), the Persona Live interview features Westporter Darrin McMahon, Dartmouth professor of history and author of “Happiness: A History.” He and Persona founder Rob Simmelkjaer will discuss the origins of happiness as a concept, and how people have come to view happiness not just an possibility but an earthly entitlement — even an obligation.

This and all “Persona Live Westport” interviews are also available on the Persona interview app, currently available in beta for iPhones. You can download the app (iPhone only) here.

Podcasts A-Plenty

Today is Podcast Day at the Westport Library.

Chip Stephens

At noon, yours truly introduces “06880: The Podcast.” Once a month, I’ll chat with an intriguing Westporter. We’ll talk about life in this wild, wacky, wonderful place we call home. Today’s guest is Chip Stephens: native Westporter, longtime Planning and Zoning Commission member, civic volunteer, and great raconteur.

Then at 6 p.m., Lindsay Czarniak and Marysol Castro chat for the weekly Persona podcast.

Lindsay Czarniak

Czarniak was the first anchor to serve as solo host for ESPN’s SportsCenter. She’s now a studio host for Fox Sports’ NASCAR coverage, and a sideline reporter on NFL games.

Castro is the in-stadium voice of the New York Mets, the first Latina in that role for a Major League Baseball team. She has been a weather anchor on “Good Morning America,” and “The Early Show,” as well as a reporter on ESPN.

Marysol Castro

Both podcasts will be available later in a variety of formats, including the library website and its social media. The Persona app can be downloaded wherever you get your podcasts.

The public is invited to both events, at the Library Forum.
