Capote, Warhol, Plath And Durrani

On Wednesday “06880” ran a story on Staples’ robotics team — 1st in the Northeast, now shooting for an international championship.

That was only part of Haris Durrani’s week.

Today the senior learned he’s earned a national portfolio gold medal in writing.

Out of 185,000 entries in the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers contest, only 16 qualified for gold.

Past winners include Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath and Joyce Carol Oates.

The honor is nice.  Even nicer, it carries a $10,000 scholarship.

Haris will be honored onstage — at Carnegie Hall — on May 31.

Unless, that is, he’s got a robotics competition elsewhere in the world.

National Honors For Nellie Stagg

Staples senior Nellie Stagg has won a National Gold Medal for artwork.

Just 0.5 percent of the 140,000-plus entries in The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers contest — sponsored by Scholastic Inc — receive nationwide recognition.  Nellie will be feted at Carnegie Hall in June, and her image of burka-clad women holding machine guns will be exhibited prominently.

This is no small honor.  Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Joyce Carol Oates, Sylvia Plath and Robert Redford — all were recognized as teeenagers too.

Here’s a tip in tough economic times:  Buy a Nellie Stagg print now.  You’ll appreciate it, as it does the same.
