Staples senior Nellie Stagg has won a National Gold Medal for artwork.
Just 0.5 percent of the 140,000-plus entries in The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers contest — sponsored by Scholastic Inc — receive nationwide recognition. Nellie will be feted at Carnegie Hall in June, and her image of burka-clad women holding machine guns will be exhibited prominently.
This is no small honor. Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Joyce Carol Oates, Sylvia Plath and Robert Redford — all were recognized as teeenagers too.
Here’s a tip in tough economic times: Buy a Nellie Stagg print now. You’ll appreciate it, as it does the same.
Riveting work! The look of despair on these woman’s faces really grabs me. They don’t look like terrorists, they look like protective mothers under siege. Sadly it looks like a poster for 2nd amendment rights. Stirring piece, I like it!
I like the ending line–very clever. 🙂
That is quite a high caliber piece, right there.
