Here’s A Poem For ’25: Hey, We Made It Out Alive!

With 2025 now almost finished
365 days diminished
Some goals achieved; some (sadly) dashed
Some bills came due; some checks were cashed
We’re older now by near a year
And closer to our end, I fear
Our thoughts turn this morning to “auld lang syne”
A phrase I’m sure that once was fine
Though what it means I have no clue
So let’s move on, and give our due
To folks in town who merit praise
(And probably too, a nice fat raise).

We say congrats to our selectmen
Led most ably by Christie (Kevin)
With help from Wistreich and O’Day
All chosen the electoral way
“Selectmen,” though, sounds anachronistic
It doesn’t take a seer or mystic
To divine that all of them ain’t male
But let’s not gnash our teeth, or wail
We only need to change one word
And presto: Hail, our new Select Board!

Sure, the year brings challenges new
Along with the ones old, tried and true
Like what to do with the bridge Cribari
A span that has been used to carry
Cars and light trucks — no eighteen-wheelers
Though now state pooh-bahs put out feelers
To build a replacement — wider, higher
An idea some locals fear is dire
The process may drag on for years
Cue agita, angst, frustration, fears.

And though the Hamlet plan is dead
Another may rise there soon, instead
Affordable housing? An 8-30g?
More retail? More restaurants? We wait to see
What some developer has up his sleeve
With a vision, a dream, in which to believe
For a sliver, a slice of old Saugatuck
Let’s hope we don’t say, “What the f—?”

To all board chairs: Goldstein and Dobin,
Lebowitz, Ezzes et al, we’re hopin’
That instead of blather, bitching, moaning
And meetings filled with speakers droning
That we all act like family: sisters and brothers
(And adults like adults: fathers and mothers)
Show civil discourse, speak with respect
Despite ideas we must reject
Let’s not be filled with bombast and bile
Come on, you guys! At least, try to smile!

To schools superintendent Tom Scarice
We wish you a year filled with peace
May classes proceed without buzzing phones
And hordes of kids busting teaches’ stones
With their pleas, “pretty please, are Air Pods fine?
I’ll be quiet, I promise. I won’t ever whine.”

Let’s shout to the rafters our thanks for the wonders
Of all our spectacular, great first responders
Police, EMS, and (for sure) firefighters
Whatever the need, they pull all-nighters
We hope too that Christmas was merry
For new parks director, Eric Barbieri
He’s taken over with insight and smarts
Its programs, its staff – all its many parts
He’s learned about every Rec cranny and nook
And – hosannas will ring! – he will give Hook’d the hook.

We cannot forget all our organizations
And volunteers who, with hard work and patience
Keep us warm and inspired, healthy and fed
Offering food pantries, hot meals, a bed
At the top of the list is the great Homes with Hope
But so many others groups help us to cope
Like VFW Post 3-Nine-Nine
Where everyone’s welcome to drink and to dine
And American Legion – that’s Post 63
Plus of course their great female auxiliary.

ABC gives young scholars A (Much) Better Chance
The Woman’s Club offers plenty of grants
Westport Pride (for the LGBTQ-plus crowd)
Westport10, for Black men, active and proud
Start-up Westport, our entrepreneurs’ hub
And for disabled adults, there’s the 203 Club
Town Farm, Farmers’ Market and (forget not) Earthplace
Fill the very important green-eco- town space
Along with Sustainable Westport, we add
If we’ve forgotten some others – well sorry, our bad.

The Playhouse has been here for (it’s true!) 90 years
Its shows and productions still draw (mostly) cheers
Huzzahs too to the Levitt, our favorite pavilion
For all those free evenings – Bravo! Thanks a million
A few yards away, ‘cross a shared parking lot
Stands a building that helps make Westport so hot
Our library is books, sure, but also much more
It’s concerts, it’s artwork, it’s programs galore
You can meet there and make things, and even record
Your own podcast or music – you’ll never be bored.

Let’s raise now our glasses, and toast all our teachers
Rabbis and imams, pastors and preachers
Custodians, paras, bus drivers and cooks
Tutors and tweeters (but not DC crooks)
Mommies and daddies and day care magicians
Dentists and vets and our favorite physicians
The heroes who gave us our “great generation”
And today’s servicemembers: our grand veneration
Young  people and teens: the hope for tomorrow
Though today we pass on a world brimming with sorrow.

We’re nearing the end of this holiday poem
Hailing the wonders that make our town “home”
So let’s cram in as many more as we can
Of all of these others, we are a huge fan:
Downtown merchants, like Savvy + Grace
Old Mill Grocery & Deli – we must save that place!
All of our realtors (like KMS Team)
The YMCA – livin’ the dream
Restaurants galore, like Pook’s Jeera Thai
The great Dylan Curran – we all love that guy.
And hey – thanks a lot to Westport’s other news source
The Journal (we check it daily, of course).

Now finally, a hat tip to all of our readers
Some just moved here; some are town leaders
Some comment often; most, never at all

Roundup: Big Beautiful Bill, Transfer Station …

The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” was touted as a way to relieve taxes.

However, according to DataHaven — a non-profit that collects data on “well-being, equity and quality of life” in Connecticut — it will have “unequal effects on American families, and will contribute to income and wealth inequality.”

They cite the Congressional Budget Office, which says the bill will increase after-tax earnings for households at the top of the income distribution, while negatively impacting households in the bottom fifth.

Weighing the positive effects of reduced taxes against the costs of reductions in Medicaid and SNAP, DataHaven says that statewide, “much of the tax relief from (the bill) will go to high-income households in southwest Connecticut.”

Taken as a whole, Westporters will reap $121 million in benefits from the bill, according to DataHaven.

The top 25% of households (based on income) will receive $73.5 million in benefits. The middle 50% will get $46.7 million, while the bottom 25% will see $789,000.

Meanwhile, just 2 towns over, Bridgeport — with a population 6 times ours — will see a total benefit of $60.3 million. Of that, $60.7 million will accrue to the top 25%, and $13.7 million to the middle 50%.

The bottom quarter of Bridgeport’s households, however, will lose $14.1 million, DataHaven says.

Berthold Nebel was one of Westport’s earliest artists.

Born in Switzerland in 1889, he came to the US with his parents when he was 1.

He was hired as noted sculptor James Earle Fraser’s studio assistant in Gramercy Park. Nebel moved to Westport in 1930, on the advice of Fraser, and bought a 9-acre piece of land on Roseville Road, with a farmhouse on it.

Nebel soon built an artist studio much like Fraser’s. He lived and worked there with his family, until his death in 1964.

Here, he worked on commissions that included 2 sets of bronze doors for the Museum of the American Indian, and the Museum of the National Geographic Society.

Among Nebel’s other works: a statue of Confederate General Joseph Wheeler for the rotunda of the US Capitol, and another of General John Sedgwick for the state Capitol in Hartford.

Now — as his family prepares to put the studio on the market — his granddaughter Maria Nebel White Keogh writes that the family has finally found a home for “Wrestlers,” Nebel’s Rodin-inspired sculpture created during World War I as his thesis at the Academy in Rome.

It’s being donated to the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme. Other important figurative works are displayed there too.

While the work is a donation, transporting and installing the work will cost up to $25,000.

Missing Muffet

Imagine looking at a social media post with a portrait painted decades ago, and the comment: “This is Muffet Shayon. Does anyone know her?” …

… and realizing she’s your sister.

And that for decades, your family had no idea where the painting was.

The other day Diana Shayon was stunned to see that image, and question, on Facebook’s “Westport Front Porch” page.

Local artist Peter Barlow had painted Diana when she was a 5-year-old Westport child, as well as her 3-year-old sister Muffet.

The Shayons had Diana’s portrait. But they never knew what happened to Muffet’s.

It ended up in an attic in the Pawcatuck home of Peter Barlow. The longtime Westport artist and photographer moved to the eastern Connecticut town a couple of decades ago. He died in August, at 95.

But Peter did not paint Muffet’s portrait.

It was the work of his mother, Dorothy Hope Smith. A portraitist specializing in children, she had a studio on Sylvan Road North.

Her most famous work was the illustration of the Gerber Baby. (Her model was a little Westport girl. Click here for Peter’s recounting of that tale, 10 years ago.)

Peter’s father, Perry Barlow, was an artist too: a prolific cover illustrator and cartoonist for The New Yorker.

Peter’s daughter, Dorrie Barlow Thomas, found Muffet’s painting while cleaning out her father’s home. Figuring it was a long shot, she posted a photo of the painting, and her query, on Facebook.

A friend saw it, and contacted Diana. The friend was right: It was Diana’s sister.

Diana went online. Eventually, she discovered Peter Barlow — and his grandmother, and daughter — through a story.

Diana contacted Dorrie. A few days later, they headed to her Stonington home, to pick up the painting.

Sadly, Muffet will never see it. She died 3 years ago.

But Diana is giving it to her niece — Muffet’s daughter.

Decades later, Muffet’s portrait has found a home.

Roundup: Revaluation Appeals, Photos Of The Year, Stop The Bleed …

The deadline to schedule an appointment to review new property assessments has been extended to Friday (December 26). The previous deadline was today.

Actual appeal applications to the Board of Assessment Appeals will be available after the Grand List is signed. They must be filed by February 20.

Two Staples High School graduates — both Pulitzer Prize winners — have 4 photos, in the New York Times‘ annual “Year in Photos” section.

Tyler Hicks (SHS ’88) contributed 3 images, all from Ukraine (February 9, May 18, October 8).

He describes this one (below): “A volunteer with the Platsdarm group collecting the remains of soldiers and civilians killed in the Ukraine war. The recovery of the dead was not always possible as fighting raged along the front, sometimes for weeks or months.”

It shows a mother tending to her 15-year-old son, who had stepped on a landmine while herding sheep. 

Lynsey says: “Many people think of war as the dangers during active combat, but there are so many casualties after a war finishes. These are the quiet stories that speak volumes about how war has tentacles everywhere.”

Westport Police made 1 custodial arrest between December 17 and 22.

A 34-year-old Stamford man was charged with larceny, payment card theft, 6 counts of stolen card theft, 12 counts of identity theft, and criminal impersonation, following investigation into a July 2923 report that credit cards and identity documents had been stolen from a wallet in an unlocked vehicle at Birchwood Country Club. He was unable to post $10,000 bond.

Police also issued these citations:

  • Traveling unreasonably fast: 3 citations
  • Operating a motor vehicle under suspension: 3
  • Failure to renew registration: 2
  • Texting while driving: 1
  • Operating an unregistered motor vehicle: 1
  • Falsification of markers: 1
  • Failure to insure a motor vehicle: 1
  • Operating a motor vehicle without minimum insurance: 1
  • Illegal display of a handicap plate: 1
  • Failure to comply with handicap parking regulations: 1
  • Tinted glass infraction: 1
  • Following too closely: 1
  • Failure to comply with state traffic commission regulations: 1

Question Box #13: Why Isn’t The Candlelight Concert Livestreamed?

Yesterday’s “06880” lead story told the tale of 2 sisters from Oklahoma — members of the Staples High School Classes of 1961 and ’63 — who returned to Westport this month, for the 85th annual Candlelight Concert. They sang the closing “Hallelujah Chorus” on the same stage they’d stood on more than 60 years earlier.

In the piece, Lucy Weberling wondered why the music department’s annual “gift to the town” is not livestreamed. Thousands of alumni — and grandparents, relatives and friends — across the country would watch. Many have asked the same question.

I put it to Steve Zimmerman, townwide coordinator of arts for the Westport Public Schools. His response provides an interesting look behind the scenes at Candlelight — and into other areas of modern life we may not always think about. Steve writes:

This question comes up often. The reality is that it is the cumulative impact of many complex factors, rather than any single challenge.

First, and foremost, while our concerts are free to the public, the district currently funds a significant amount each year in production costs to ensure a high-quality in-person experience. We can’t simply raise ticket prices or add a new budget line to add streaming.

Since the 75th anniversary, the scope of our program has changed. Candlelight now includes a wide range of student-led small ensembles that vary from year to year, from chamber groups such as the piano, violin and oboe trio, to the 16-member women’s a cappella ensemble, to a full rock band with multiple guitars, keyboards and drums. Each instrument has unique requirements to be miced and balanced.

And these groups appear both before and after the combined choir and orchestra of more than 200 students, which has its own challenges (particularly in amplifying the choir). With performers spread across the stage and hall, managing sound reinforcement for the live audience alone is already extremely complex.

Adding a livestream introduces a separate and substantial technical challenge. The audio mix that works well in the room does not translate cleanly to broadcast. To do this properly, we would need a second audio engineer and mixing console to create a dedicated livestream mix, along with many additional microphones. We would also need a producer to manage camera selection and transitions, as we did for both the 75th anniversary and COVID-era broadcasts.

Beyond production logistics and costs, licensing has become a significantly more complex hurdle over the past decade as streaming has expanded all over. Media consolidation and corporate buyouts have placed large catalogs of music, including works by relatively minor composers, under the control of major media conglomerates. As a result, rights decisions that were once straightforward are now handled by large corporate entities whose licensing models are designed around commercial streaming and revenue generation.

We currently pay approximately $1,500 annually for our School Music License, and maintain additional licenses with BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC to cover public performance and audio broadcast. Adding live video streaming would require an additional license, which we estimate would increase annual costs by at least $1,500.

Some works still fall outside these agreements and require individual permissions. In cases involving large rights holders such as Disney, works that originated with relatively minor composers are now owned by major corporations, which often requires extensive outreach to identify the correct contact, and can result in fees of up to $1,000 for a single short choral work.

Candlelight performances also include original compositions, such as the vignettes created this year. Some composers, particularly those who are mindful of their professional online presence, are not comfortable having these smaller works broadcast publicly under their name, which adds another layer of complexity.

The level of administrative effort needed to secure rights is currently not possible for teachers. More broadly, we are operating in an era when content owners are increasingly attentive to streaming and enforcement. I act cautiously to protect the district and town, particularly given our community’s strong ties to the arts and media industries and the scrutiny that can accompany questions of fair use. Things are changing, but slowly.

In short, while we would absolutely like to explore live streaming in the future, doing so responsibly would require additional staffing, equipment, licensing and budget. Our goal is to pursue this only if it can be done in a sustainable and high-quality way.

The livestream produced for our 75th anniversary was successful in part because it was a one-time expense and a much simpler production. Similarly, the COVID-era Candlelight broadcast was a significant production. and required nearly 2 years to fully absorb financially. Our current program structure and the unique nature of these events make routine livestreaming a far more demanding undertaking.

I appreciate the desire to experience Candlelight from afar and recognize that these challenges are not insurmountable. Over time, this may become more feasible financially and logistically.

Candlelight Concert: The Oklahoma Experience

Staples High School’s first Candlelight Concert was in 1941. 

Lucy Weberling took part in the 20th Candlelight, in 1960. But she’s never forgotten it. She was here in Westport for last weekend’s concert — the 85th.

It was a long journey. Lucy lives in Oklahoma. She writes: 

My Staples Class of 1961 was the first class to go all 3 years in the “new” building. (In 1958, the high school moved from Riverside Avenue — now Saugatuck Elementary School — to a campus of 6 unconnected buildings on North Avenue.)

Staples music director John Ohanian created the Candlelight Concert in 1941.

I was in choir, chorus, band and orchestra, under Mr. John Ohanian and George Weigle. I loved all the fantastic arts programs at Staples, and majored in music at Southern Methodist University in Dallas following high school.

My sister Janet Weberling (now Holly Redwood), also was active in the music programs in Staples. She want on to Northwestern University, in marketing.

About 10 years ago I got interested in livestreaming the Staples Candlelight service, and was successful. We sang along to the whole program. It was so uplifting and exciting — really adding to the holiday spirit.

Then they took it way, probably due to ASCAP/BMI issues. I know, because I owned a music venue for a while.

[NOTE: “06880” asked Stephen Zimmerman, the public schools’ town-wide arts coordinator, why Candlelight is not livestreamed. He said that while the music department would like to explore livestreaming in the future, doing so would require additional staffing, sound equipment, licensing and budgets. They will pursue it if, financially and logistically, it can be done in a sustainable, high-quality way.]

I still play music. I taught it in all levels in schools, play in bluegrass and other roots music groups, and jam with friends and other musicians.

I am on the board of bluegrass festivals, and lead yoga sessions at various bluegrass festivals nationally. I also sing in my Unitarian Universalist church choir here in Tulsa.

My sister also sings in the UU choir. Tulsa hosts the Woody Guthrie Center, the Bob Dylan Center, and Leon Russell’s Church Studio. We are all about music.

We have quite an important Native American culture too. There are 39 tribes here, and the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City.

As I get older, and want to experience some of what you might call my “bucket list” ( I don’t call it that), and because my son works for American Airlines, and I can fly either standby or a 20% discount, I thought: Why not go to the Staples concert?

I wrote to Staples, got names of teachers in the music department, and asked about assurance of tickets. (I probably bugged them a lot, but I didn’t want to make plane reservations unless I was sure to get tickets.)

My sister and I made our reservations, I got in touch with my friend Chris Burdette, who also sang in the Staples choir, and we made our plans.

We also wanted to see the holiday lights in New York City. I got in touch with family, and planned that for the day before the concert.

The trip went well. There was a gridlock alert. It was hugely packed. We could barely move. But we saw some lights, and the Rockefeller Center tree from afar.

When it came time for the Candlelight concert, it was so thrilling to enter into the building to a chamber music group welcoming us.

I hurried to find seats. We ended up in the front row — not the best, but the only ones available.

Tears came to my eyes as “Sing We Noel” began. It was almost holy.

The selections represented many other religions and ethnicities. That’s so important, and something I miss living in Oklahoma (although we do have a lot of Hispanic, Asian and Muslim heritage here).

The “Kije Suite,” “Bogoroditse Devo,” “Ogo ni fun Oluwa,” “Stille Nacht” — and then the magnificent “Gloria” by John Rutter – all were fantastic.

The Candlelight Vignettes — a super version of “Carol of the Bells,” “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” “Waltz of the Flowers,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Sleigh Ride”
(wow!), and … the “Hallelujah Chorus!”

I was thrilled to get up and sing along with the choir. Even though I was hoarse, and was with the sopranos.

This concert will live as one of my most favorite memories and experiences. I still am basking in the glory of the music program at Staples High School. You Westporters are so fortunate to get to send your kids to this marvelous school.

My sis and I were/are so lucky that, when our dad was transferred to the New York office of his company, MW Kellogg, that he chose Westport as our place to live.

I hope to come back again next year.  What a wonderful experience!

Artists Collective Exhibit: Sale With A Soul

On Tuesday, “06880” culture correspondent Robin Moyer Chung checked out the Artists Collective of Westport winter exhibit, at the Westport Country Playhouse barn. All works are 12″x12″ — and all are for sale. She reports:

This time of year is always stuffed with craft sales, pop-ups and gift guides. The Artists Collective’s is one of many.

Yet unlike many of these shopping events, this exhibit has a soul.

With a nod to consumerism, all of the paintings are portable, at one square foot, and at affordable price points.

The unintended and interesting consequence of this democracy is that it allowed me to consider the uniqueness and substance of each work, rather than thinking, gift-wise, of its size and practicality.

Which doesn’t mean I think all of them are great. I don’t. A couple of pricier ones feel as though the artist expects us to be grateful for the opportunity to own a toenail clipping from their body of work. Yeah, no.

But these don’t detract from those truly effective in their narrative and worth.

“Celebration” by Lynn U. Miller, with her studied and swirly swoops of ribbons and confetti, is so optimistic and energetic that I stepped in close to see the brushstrokes and markings.

Looking at Ken Runkel’s “Honey, Come Quick, There’s A Spider In the Tub!” I laughed out loud, both for its masterful, humorous nightmare of an arachnid, and because it was painted by a man — and we all know that men should be our protectors against all things spidery and rodent.

Virgina Zimmerman’s “Twilight – Mykonos, Greece” is a quiet, sturdy homage to a near-mythic island that now crawls with tourists. She somehow blends the island’s notorious color scheme — bright white and bright blue — into a serene palette.

,In “Sun Solstice,” Jennifer Wyman made the photo of a colorful dahlia on a sunny day into a sepia print, focusing not on the blossom’s beauty but on a drama and resoluteness belying its ephemerality.

There are other stories — one artist’s canvas honors her journey when 11 people in her life passed away within several months of each other. Another artist stumbled onto a local-sh store window displaying 2 dolls, compelling her to stop and photograph them because they were “so creepy.” (And it is. Was. Hopefully the dolls have been removed.)

Roundup: Organic Market, Religion, Police …

After 38 years of nourishing Westport, Organic Market owners Maggie and Charles Vosgueritchian are retiring.

But the Playhouse Square mainstay’s many fans should not worry. The new owners — chef Talin and her partner Mary — share the same values, and commitment to quality and wellness.

They will continue the Organic Market’s mission, while bringing fresh ideas to the new chapter.

“We’re honored to continue the legacy that Maggie and Charles built,” Talin and Mary say.

“Our goal is to preserve everything the community loves about The Organic Market, while expanding on its vision of healthy, sustainable living.”

The health food store and café specializes in organic groceries, fresh juices and homemade meals.

The Vosgueritchians — who are retiring — bought the business in 1987. The transition takes place January 2.

“We are deeply grateful for the support of our loyal customers, our wonderful staff, and the Westport community that has grown with us through the years,” Maggie says.

“It has been an honor to serve this town, and to share in so many moments of connection, nourishment and joy.”

She and Charles look forward to sharing memories with customers through the holidays.

In a dark time, the third annual event for Jewish women to celebrate Hanukkah together was, like the Festival of Lights itself, a warm, bright spot.

Over 70 women gathered at The Blondinit on Tuesday. Rabbi Shira Sklar led the candle lighting. A raffle of an Israeli wine tasting, donated by Blondinit owner Inda Sale, raised funds for Enosh, the largest mental health organization in Israel supporting the hostages, families and victims of the October 7 massacre.

The event — organized by Charlene Zeiberg, Carolyn Cohen and Stephanie Feingold — grew out of an anonymous post on social media 2 years ago, asking how to make connections with other Jewish women. The result was a Hanukkah gathering: a space to connect, find comfort, and share the hope of the holiday.

Green’s Farms Church celebrates the seasons of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany with a special artist’s reception this Friday (December 19, 6 to 7:30 p.m.).

The evening features “The Light Shines in the Darkness.” Katie Nelson Troyer’s paintings explore “illumination, movement, and the quiet power of spiritual encounter.”

The reception includes refreshments and live music from Katie and her husband Scott.
