Friday Flashback #527

Christopher Maroc is a frequent Facebook poster.

He regularly offers photos of bygone Westport. The other day, he shared an intriguing map of Main Street, and environs.

It seems to be from the late 1970s or early 1980s — but readers could not give a definitive date.

Have at it, “06880” readers!

And to give the conversation an added boost: What was your favorite place, on the map below? And what’s the spot that most jogs an unexpected memory?

Well, the Laura Ashley store opened at 85 Main St. in 1979. So …

  2. Sissie Hornung”s C’est Gold…She was such a sweetheart..It was the 2nd precinct for those of us walking a beat on Main St. Coffee was always on.

  3. I’d say 1987 because of Aca Joe

  4. Certainly some time in the mid 80’s. My business was Quick Copy (#5) on the Post Road. Great memories. Thanks Dan for posting this.

yeah, definitely not late 70’s because Country Gal would’ve been near Selective Eye and next to Klein’s was a funky clothing store called Raj (I think that was the name). So fun to see Aspasia and World of Cheese (anyone remember their humongous Toblerone bar on display?!) and Sam Sloat!

So it has to be later than November 1976. My attorney brought an opportunity to me to purchase the building where Grostedes is located on the map. At that time it was occupied by Westport Food Market.

  9. The Ships restaurant. I think it fully opened in 1977. So, this map could be from the “late 70’s”. I worked there in 1978-1979 (mostly in the summer and spring break). It was a fun place to go to and work. I remember waiting on Paul Newman. Good memories. I also remember well Kleins and the Remarkable Book Shop.

  10. At the bottom of the map sketch there are stores listed with times open, day and dates. Sunday, December 11 and Sunday, December 18 occurred in 1977, 1983 and 1988. So best guess would be 1988 if “Judi Boisson didn’t open until 1986.”

Late 80s, perhaps early 90s. My memory starts around ’95 and by then TCBY was in the spot now occupied by Fred.

  12. I second Dave Eason about Cissie at C’est Gold. She treated everyone with such respect and friendliness whether you had a fortune to spend or could only afford a trinket. Early 1980’s, I’d guess, judging by the other names of stores.

  13. I was expecting to see Schaefer’s Sporting Goods at #6 as I thought they were around into the 90s. But, maybe not.

As for a great memory, I‘ll go with “Soup’s On”. A great place for lunch or dinner. I recall being in town in 1978 for an appointment while on a home leave from our assignment in Paris and we stopped for lunch with our daughter Kara, age 5 at the time. When the waitress asked for our orders, Kara asked if they had escargot. The waitress was more than a bit taken back with the request to the point that Kara thought she had said something wrong.

Of course, I thought was cool.
