Last weekend’s snowstorm reminded longtime residents of the Old Days.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a winter like this.
When we did, artist Al Willmott painted them.
In 1994, he was on the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge. Not much has changed (though the trolley was poetic license).

Nearly 2 decades earlier — in 1978 — he painted Railroad Place. It looks a bit different today — not the streetscape, but the businesses.

Looks like RR PLACE was 2 way traffic.
I remember in 1978, It snowed in the mountains of Cuba, so I can only imagine what Westport looked like. I happened to be in Jamaica and it hit 39 degrees.
Al and Helen Ann Willmott lived directly across the street from us on Loren Lane when I was in elementary school. Every winter in the late 50s and early 60s he would sculp gigantic animal sculptures after a big snow. Elephants, bears, rabbits, they were all a wonderful gift to dozens of neighborhood kids.
