“06880” Podcast: David Roth & Kerry Long

David Roth and Kerry Long are co-directors of Staples Players.

That’s our local high school drama troupe. But if you’ve ever been to a Players show — and if you haven’t, why not?! — you know it is anything but a high school production.

In addition to their spectacularly professional work, both David and Kerry are Staples graduates. The other day, we chatted on the Westport Library stage about Players’ 66-year past, present and future (don’t miss “Elf” this November!).

  1. Just watched your excellent (of course and always) interview with Dave and Kerry about the Staples Players.

When they were asked about the carryover effect that the Players have had on participant’s lives they only focused on the theatre related impact…which are monumental, but not everything.

This is certainly not a criticism of anyone, they overlooked the impact the experience had on members of the cast and crew in so many other life-skills. It is a character building experience across the boards. Participants learn team building, working past limited group experience and interfacing with people outside their comfort zones. It teaches poise, public speaking, self-assurance and reliance on new skills. It takes awkward adolescents and helps them to become polished and mature. One does not need to earn an Oscar, Tony or Emmy to have profited from the Staples Players stage and technical staff.
