Friday Flashback #358

Some “Friday Flashback” scenes are jarring. They remind us of a Westport that once was, yet has changed forever.

Today’s images are timeless.

These postcards — part of Seth Schachter’s vast collection — are clear reminders of Westport’s past.

At the same time though, they are comfortably familiar.

Some things don’t change.

The Saugatuck River is one of them.

These are interesting views, “timeless” as you say, but not very recognizable, except for the tugboat picture. The first one, identified as Saugatuck is still unknown to me, but probably looking west from between the RR bridge and Bridge St. The clue is the estate which I don’t recognize. The second picture seems to be not a harbor but a view just south of the Post Road bridge looking east toward an early version of the Congregational Church on the east side of the Post Road. The third photo I think was taken from the Post Road Bridge looking north to the site where the original house known as the Gorham Island mansion was later moved there from further up Main Street (think Gorham Ave.) and now where the Plastic Yellow stands, unfortunately.

The photo of the RR bridge was taken before electrification in 1917 but after the railroad was 4-tracked in 1892.
