Deer are a common sight in Westport. But what alert “06880” reader Johanna Rossi saw yesterday, just before dusk at St. Vincent’s Hospital on Long Lots Road, was not.
At first she thought a light was shining, reflecting on its antlers. But when she got out of her car, she realized something was stuck on them.
She has no idea what it was, or how it got there. But another deer tried unsuccessfully to help get it off. “So sad,” Johanna says.

We saw him after Halloween- we think he ran through a Halloween display. Poor thing!!
He’s been like this for MONTHS??!!
Oh I wish I hadn’t seen this. It’ll keep me awake all night, knowing he’s distressed and there’s nothing I can do.
He’ll be dropping his antlers pretty soon.
Oh, yes! You’re right of course! Thank you so much. That eases my mind.
Many years ago, when I still lived in Westport, I was house sitting for a friend of my mom’s for the weekend. On one of the days, I was sitting in her backyard eating lunch and reading a book when I saw a deer on the edge of the yard staring at me. I pretended to ignore it and it slowly came closer. At one point, I held out a piece of my sandwich and the deer came over and ate it out of my hand. The point here is, deer in Westport aren’t that afraid of humans. If you are patient, able to sit very still for a while, and be quiet, it’s possible that the deer will approach you and you might be able to grab that stuff off the antlers.
Halloween displays can hurt animals such as deer and birds.
