Forget the gym. Forget Dry January.
If you want to try something new for the new year, take the Westport Library’s Winter Reading Challenge.
It’s an annual tradition for young readers. This time the Library has included adults. There’s a regular reading challenge for them, plus a new one for families.
The Adult Winter Reading Challenge started on the first day of winter. It runs through January 31.
There are 10 categories. You can tackle all, one, or any number in between. The main goal is to enjoy reading.
There are only 2 rules:
- Each category can only be completed once.
- Each book counts for only one category.
Once you finish a book that fits a category, submit it through a form on the Library website.
You can track your progress on the Adult Winter Challenge leaderboard to see rankings, and the books that other people are reading.

Melanie K., Di C. and Jessica O. top the leaderboard today.
Dive deeper by joining the Westport Reading Challenge Facebook Group. Discuss books, share recommendations, and stay motivated throughout the challenge.
The Winter Reading Program for Families begins January 16, and runs through March 16. It’s open to children, and families of all ages.
The aim is simple: read anything, anytime, anywhere, as much as you like.
Reading is measured in minutes. Every minute spent reading counts toward your goal. Books, comics, magazines, poems, the back of a cereal box — read what you want, then tally your time for a chance to earn free books.

Register online starting January 16. You’ll get an activity sheet and 6 fox dot stickers from the Children’s Library. Use these color-coded stickers to contribute to a communal art piece.
Every 50 minutes spent reading will earn 6 more stickers.
Earn a book of your choice from the Library’s prize cart by reading a total of 500 minutes, or completing all 10 activities on your activity sheet.
Sign up on January 16. Then start reading — perhaps with a daily dose of “06880”?
