It Takes A Village To Beautify A Town
Town officials perform tons of thankless tasks.
They read mind-numbing reports. They sit through mind-numbing meetings. They put up with a lot garbage.
Today, they had enough of that trash.
In the wee hours of Westport’s Green Day, RTM member Andrew Colabella and his friend Franco Zaffina — a 2003 Staples graduate — headed to Grace Salmon Park.
The popular pocket park off Imperial Avenue attracts tons of visitors. Sometimes, some forget (ahem) to pick up after themselves.
By 9 a.m. Westport Rotarians, residents of Gault Park and Marvin Road, Homes With Hope founder/RTM rep Jeff Wieser, Parks and Recreation director Jen Fava, 1st selectman Jim Marpe, assistant town attorney Eileen Lavigne Flug and the Westport Garden Club were there too.
Clad in gloves and boots, armed with trash pickers, and roaming the high tide line and marshlands, they filled over 25 garbage bags.
Among the loot: styrofoam cups, bottles, cigarette butts, and — mostly — dog droppings.
It took 2 hours to clean the entire park.
But Garden Club members were not done. They hauled out shovels and edgers. Magically, their green thumbs beautified the garden beds.
That’s just one of the many spots benefiting from today’s Green Day. All across town, other groups, families and individuals did their part to Make Westport Green Again.
Colabella could think of no better way to celebrate his 29th birthday.
“Westport is my home — along with 27,000 other residents,” he says.
“There’s about 34 square miles of land and water. We are responsible for every inch of our environment. Please clean up after yourselves — and your dog — and dispose of waste properly.
“There are garbage cans at every park. Don’t throw trash into the marsh, where animals live.”

Unsung Hero #39
When an alert “06880” reader recommends someone as an Unsung Hero, I pay attention.
When 2 alert readers make the same recommendation on the same day, I start writing.
Last week — the day before the snow — both Joelle Malec and Michael Ryan noticed the same thing. Joelle says:
I often walk around the Saugatuck River. I always think that some day I should bring bags and pick out the trash from our river’s banks.
Well, some day was today for this woman. On her own she’d filled half a dozen bags, because she couldn’t stand to run by the trash one more day!
I stopped, thanked her and hugged her for doing such a great thing.
She allowed me to take her picture, but did not want me to share her name for “06880”‘s Unsung Heroes.
She is my hero today!

Pics Of The Day #324
Most of us stayed inside today, waiting for the nor’easter.
It arrived. As of 7:30 pm, over 1500 Westport customers were without power. Including yours truly. With many trees down, this could be a long restoration.
Earlier today, when it was quieter — and prettier — Betsy P. Kahn roamed around town. Camera in hand, she captured these beautiful scenes:

Late Arrival
Today’s “nor’easter” took its time arriving.
There were flurries all morning. Kids loved their day off from school. They didn’t even have to shovel. (Of course, there wasn’t enough snow to go sledding either.)
This was the scene around noon, at Compo Beach:
A bit inland on Imperial Avenue, snow dusted Grace Salmon Park:
By mid-afternoon, the snow was real:
Here was Wakeman Field, next to Bedford Middle School — often the windiest spot in Westport:
Yet the winds were not as strong as forecast. The snow was not as heavy.
High winds and steady snow are still predicted, particularly from 5 to 7 p.m.
We shall see…
