Winslow Park is Westport’s — maybe Fairfield County’s — favorite dog park.
Before its most recent run though, it was other things: a sanitarium (for half a century) — and before that, one of the most elegant estates in town (here’s looking at you, State Senator Henry Richard Winslow, and your wife Mary).
Where not sure when, why or by whom a wrought iron fence was erected on the Compo Road North side of the property.
But it sure looks like it’s been there a while. It was the subject of last week’s Photo Challenge (click here to see).
Nearly every reader who responded nailed it: Marilyn Alger, Rachel Sara Halperin, Ed Simek, Morgan Eklund, Jonathan McClure, Seth Braunstein, Martha Witte, Lynn Untermeyer Miller and Clark Thiemann.
There were only a couple of errant guesses (Haskins Preserve, and Christ & Holy Trinity Church). Good ideas — but not the right fence.

Andrew is a Westporter. It’s his hometown. By definition no matter where he walks in town, he’s home. I think foregoing motor vehicles in favor of walking and/or traditional bicycles (no e-bikes) is not only smart, it’s sustainable. Fossil fuel is as Republican as that horrible man on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Winslow Park? Fairfield County’s favorite dog park?
Waveny and Taylor Farms, head and shoulders above Winslow. Nicer clientele too.

My aunt from Ohio spent a couple of weeks in the Westport Sanitarium around ‘62-‘63 as a sideline activity while she was visiting us. I won’t disclose the reason but let’s just say she was also recovering from a sore elbow. Personally, I think the Winslow grounds are much more useful as the doggie dump. But what was the matter with Westport in the late 60’s? Imagine using the center of town, specifically the back yard of the women’s club, as the town dump? Too many drug users and not enough pharmacists. Everybody was self-medicating.
While “The Dog Days of Summer” might make you think of panting dogs trying to stay cool (that’s what I think of), it is the time of year for “The Dog Star”. From Google: ‘The ancient Greeks and Romans associated the star with the intense, oppressive heat of late summer. Because the star rose alongside the Sun during this period, they termed the hot months the “dog days”.’
I had buddies at Staples whose girlfriends moonlighted in the K-9 corps. I preferred mine as pets. When I wanted a date all I needed was a box of Milk Bones and a silent whistle. That’s how I saved enough to pay for college.
