Last week, Dave Matlow headed west.
Off Saugatuck Avenue, and on Saugatuck Shores, he revisited 4 houses he’d photographed between 10 and 21 years ago.
Here’s the latest edition of what he found: homes before demolition, and those that replaced them.

Burritts Landing North, September 2011 …

… and April 2026.

Harbor Road, April 2018 …

Less is more
Ugh.
I feel nostalgic looking at the sweet houses of yesteryear. Just my time.and age, I suppose. I love the simpler life. The larger mansions are of course, attractive. Why do we need much? Just me so don’t blast me. Westport of the 60s is not now and I get that. Rock on Westport of today. We no longer live there
They do look really large (the new ones) but they also look more interesting. I agree, I don’t need as big a space , but some growing families do now. Much has changed since Covid with many families needing space to work from home as well as separate bedroom spaces, now that much work can be done remotely. So if you have a number of children and don’t want them sharing bedrooms, you probably need more space for bedrooms, a guestroom, and at least one designated office space if not 2. Plus many families like to have a family room and a separate space for their kids to hang out with friends.
I think they look better and I also think we should respect what the owners want to buy and live in. I’ve lived here since the 50’s and have been horrified to see some beautiful unique and antique houses torn down but in these particular cases I don’t think we are losing anything worth preserving.
Gotta agree Jeff. By the way was the house you grew up in a Frazier Peters house?
