I have home movies from the mid 1950s of crushing snow storms! We were on North Maple Avenue back then.
This winter is what I remember from my childhood in Westport back in the 60’s and 70’s. It got cold in October and remained cold until March and we often had snow throughout the season. If you got a new pair of ice skates or a sled from Santa you could probably use them the same day…a new bike not so much. When I was stationed at Griffiss AFB in Rome, NY they got around 184″ of snow annually and one day we had 42″ in a single day! I hope all the kids enjoy this increasingly rare winter weather.
We learned a new trick these last two storms.
We put tarps down on our gravel drive way before it snowed, it makes moving the snow much easier. Best part when you finish you lift the tarps and there is no ice.

For those around for a bit in Connecticut, we are so thankful for how much better the state – and certainly Westport as well- has gotten about snow removal. Still have nightmares about our drive to Okemo during the ‘78 blizzard. I guess a Chevy Nova w/o snow tires was probably not such a good idea after all.
Steve Emmett, I assume you are the same Steve Emmett I knew when I was an au pair in Westport 67-68? You knew my girl-friend better than me, Trees, she was from Holland, I was from Denmark. I remember fondly my time in Westport. I have lived in California for many years. Trees moved back to Holland after living in New York for some years, probably around 1973 or 74. I hear from her every Christmas and on my birthday. She never married but have been with the same guy for many years, no children. I was married but have been divorced for many years. I have one daughter and 2 granchildren the live in Pasadena. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I probably provided more info than you care to know, but as I wrote I have fond memories of Westport and all the nice and fun people I met there. Dan wrote a nice story about me some years ago.
