“06880” Podcast: Christina Scherwin

Christina Scherwin is the chief operating officer at the Westport Weston Family YMCA.

She’s perfect for the role.

A 2-time Olympian in the javelin for her native Denmark, Christina competed in the 2004 and ’08 Olympics. She was a finalist at the 200t World Championships.

In 2002 she was inducted into the NCAA Hall of Fame. Christina has also served on the Danish Olympic Athlete and World Athletics Commissions.

The other day, Christina and I chatted at the Westport Library about her years as a competitive athlete, her work at the Y, and much more. Click here or below, for our wide-ranging conversation.

  1. There was an Au Pair from Denmark who worked in Westport around 1964 and now lives in California. Once in a while she comments on 06880, but I can’t remember her name. Help me out here old timers.

      • YES- Dan Woog is correct! I think I’m going to send her an e-mail now. I mean, let’s face it, the Danish people are wonderful. Denmark is a wonderful country, and have given more money to the Ukrainians in the last four years than any other country. ( Obviously, that’s per capital.) Thanks, Dan!

  2. Hannah Jensen? I seem to remember seeing occasional comments from her re certain articles.

  3. Christina is a rock star! Thanks for showcasing her!

  4. She seems extremely competent and happy. Excellent ingredients. A real live spear chucker. That’s impressive. Tip my 🎩 hat.

  5. So, why is she “perfect for the role”? How many Westport kids and adults compete in the javelin? When I was on the BJHS (now Bedford Middle School) track team in 1966-‘67, (I was co-captain) it was illegal for children to compete in the javelin. As it was explained to us at the time, this rule was passed in the wake of a child who was killed by a javelin that was thrown by another child in an interscholastic competition. Does this mean that the Westport YMCA will be moved to Denmark as retaliation for Trump’s hollow threat to annex Greenland? I think Matt Johnson would have a lot to say about this. If Christina wants to really accomplish something meaningful she should move the YMCA back to its original location at Bedford Square and return Camp Mahackeno to the indigenous tribes that originally inhabited it.
