[OPINION] 4 Days Later, Snow Hazards Abound

“06880” has been snowed under, by residents writing about the aftermath of Sunday’s weather.

Longtime Westport resident Jamie Walsh says:

Driving down Main Street this morning, free of parked cars and people, I could not believe the condition of sidewalks, crosswalks, and parking spaces downtown and elsewhere throughout town.

Many pedestrian areas remain uncleared or inadequately treated, creating hazardous conditions for residents, visitors, seniors, and anyone with mobility challenges.

Slippery crosswalks and snow-covered curb cuts force pedestrians into the street, while icy parking spaces increase the risk of falls the moment someone exits their vehicle.

Beyond the obvious safety risks, this represents a significant liability issue. When commonly used public walkways are not properly maintained, injuries become far more likely — and with them, potential claims against both property owners and the Town.

A single preventable fall can result in serious injury, costly medical bills, and legal exposure that far outweighs the effort required to clear these areas promptly.

Westport prides itself on being a walkable, welcoming downtown. That reputation depends on basic winter maintenance being treated as a priority, not an afterthought.

Timely snow removal and proper ice mitigation are not just matters of convenience — they are essential public safety responsibilities. Addressing these conditions promptly protects pedestrians, supports local businesses, and reduces unnecessary risk for everyone.

  1. Glad you spoke up, Jamie. There’s lots of areas that have been done great and other areas poorly, even not at all.
One awful area is the right turn lane onto cribari bridge is covered w piles of snow

  2. David J. Loffredo

Unacceptable. I blame the Tooker Administration.

Let me add to the list the lovely new sidewalks along Cross Highway. Driving down the road between Weston Rd and Bayberry, I only noticed one small section that may have been cleared. I thought when those were built, the town was taking responsibility for clearing them.

I think that this amount of snow and freezing weather hasn’t been seen since 20126 or earlier. Who exactly is in charge of what prob hasn’t been discussed in over a decade so no surprise it will take this conversation to get it done…hopefully, not a law suit!

  6. Nothing has been done as of 6:00pm this evening.

  7. I’m making a prediction. The DOJ will be finding the missing 1,179 votes at the Georgia election site! Also, Maxwell’s prison sentence will either get a pardon or more likely a commutation to time served. Trump was best friends with the serial rapist and abuser for ten years. Birds of a feather…….

  8. The snow levels deposited at this last storm are part of record levels and are made far worse and dangerous due to the long below 32 degree temperature which even is stopping melt times for weeks at a time. This should be ruled a dangerous and an emergency condition. Public works and streets departments should use loaders and dump trucks to remove the larger piles and haul them to dumping locations. The downtown areas should also be considered unsafe and damaging and be handled quickly!
The towns liability will be a major potential economic loss with the lack of normal melt off and this weekend’s additional storm snows pegged at 3-4 more inches!

  9. Looking for a bit of perspective, note that this storm produced the 7th-most one-day accumulation in the 78 years of records from Sikorsky Airport in Bridgeport. And, nationally, Westport is in far, far better shape than the vast majority of the other 21 ‘emergency’ states.
Perhaps, take a moment to count our blessings?!

  10. John, I agree. This was a tough storm. The big issue has been the extreme low in temperatures, allowing little to no melting of snow.

I do understand Jaime’s concerns, as safety is an issue. I know our Department of Public Works Employees, as well as our First Responders have been working hard, and doing their best.

I know our expectations are high in our community, right now, we need to be patient, and proceed with caution in areas that need “attention.”

Please, don’t Jog or Bike, the site lines everywhere are compromised.

  11. Good news as it seems Public Works opened up some of the curb cuts and crossings today that were creating hazardous conditions.
