Marc Hartog is deputy director of Westport Emergency Medical Services.
They’re one of our town’s most important — and often unrecognized — organizations.
You hope you never meet them. But when you do, they are there for you — 24/7/365.
The other day, when Marc joined me on our “06880” podcast, I learned some of what they do — and how, and why.
Much of it was eye-opening. All of it is fascinating.

Fascinating. I live in Lexington, Kentucky and our EMS is part of the fire department rather than the police department. I sent this podcast to my good friend who joined the fire department and has become a full-time EMT. WELL DONE Dan and Marc.
Very informative, very important information, Dan. Thank you!
An interesting podcast, helpful information. I am a proud Westporter since 1995. This is an amazing, generous town.
Thank you Dan and Marc

After email with Dan Wood, he suggested I change my e mail to Dan, to the comment section rather than his E mail, While Mark Hartog did a wonderful job on the EMS he is much younger than me and I have family history about the Westport EMS / Ambulance. The moderator was correct when he stated the first ambulance was operated out of a garage accross from the humane society on Main street, The Ambulance was operated by my Great Uncle Arthur Audley, He was first aid trained, When he received a call he would remove the grey overalls don the white overalls and take the call, When the ambulance returned, Arthur would call up to the house (located above the garage, on the hill, location was aproximatly across from Westport Fire Department). Arthurs daughters, Edna and Dott would come to the garage, clean the ambulance and make up the cot. The ambulance was later operated by the Fire department for a short time, the Ambulance was obtained and became a private ambulance service, Operated by Ed Audley (Ed Audley was a police officer assigned to second shift desk and reception) during the time Ed Audley worked the Police Department the service employed some other attendents, This included Bernie Stahursky, Bob Cunningham and several others, Myself (Dave Audley) after returning from the AirForce. Ed Audley along with my mother attended the first EMT program at Norwalk Hospital, I attended the second with a few Westport Police Officers. The Westport ambulance moved to the Town of Westport and became the Westport Volunteer EMS located at the Wesport police Department. The Director of the Westport Volunteer Ambulance was ED Audley, (The Same Ed Audley who operated the Westport Ambulance) My Mother Patricia Audley worked with the Westport Volunteer EMS for several years. I currenntly reside in North Carolina, but always loved the history of the town of westport, Hope you enjoy reading about my family and its connection to the Westport Ambulance / Volunteer EMS.
Dave Audley
Thanks, Dave. Enjoyed reading about the history of EMS.
Dave’s father, Harry Audley, was former Fire Chief of Westport. A family of true service to the community!
