“06880” Podcast: Markus Marty

Markus Marty grew up in Switzerland. From age 4 on, he biked everywhere. He spent 15 years in New York, and rode somewhere every day of the year.

After moving to Westport in 2020, he was stunned to find biking here more difficult than New York.

The other day, Markus and I chatted onstage at the Westport Library. We talked about Bike Westport — the non-profit he helped found to make bicycling (and walking) better and safer all over town.

We discussed other quality of life issues too. I learned a lot, about both transportation and Markus.

  1. Love this idea. We should have bike paths on main roads and there should bike paths along the lovely coast!!

Such a fun and informative interview with Markus Marty. Thanks, Dan. Brings back all the nostalgic memories of my first bike trips when my dad taught me how to ride a bike, and his philosophy being: “when the road gets tough, just keep pedaling.”

And while we’re at it, how about a few more sidewalks.

  4. Marcus has some wonderful ideas. The big challenge we have have are narrow roads dating back to colonists and Revolutionary War.

The goal is pedestrian and biker safety, along with everyone following the rules of the road.

Gloria, as for sidewalks, I think the town and state has done a great job over the past 8 years fixing up old sidewalks and creating new ones.

It’s good to see the state and federal government providing towns with funding for studies and implementation of pedestrian and bicycle safety.

  5. The narrow bike lanes are full of debris forcing the riders into the car lane. Some uniformed cyclists disobey stop signs. Some ride side by side. Teach cyclists rules and manners. Ditto drivers.

  6. Would love to help with your idea Marcus – reach back.
