History Museum Bricks: An “06880” Apology

Yesterday, in an “Opinion” piece, “06880” reader Jamie Walsh stated that in the process of creating a new walkway, the Westport Museum for History & Culture had eliminated the personalized bricks donated in a fundraising drive a decade or so ago.

In fact, the Museum kept all the bricks, and reinstalled them alongside a new path, beginning on Avery Place.

Personalized bricks line the new pathway.

The post has been removed.

“06880” apologizes to the Westport Museum for History & Culture, and invites readers to see the bricks — and exhibits — for themselves.

My comment stands. The town should not spend 100 million on a new Long Lots and buy this so- called museum. I believe owner will eventually cash in and auction off all the expensive pieces of history. I wouldn’t give a penny to this place and I talked to a former employee yesterday who gave me some insight to this place! It’s not what you think it is!

Here’s another idea. The town should open up a new Westport Historical Society and starve this place out of business!

Here’s another idea. Columbia, Maryland legally requires a payment every year of about $650 from every citizen who owns and resides in Columbia. It’s not part of your property tax. You basically get nothing for the payment except to use their swimming pools. This is actually legal. How about Westport doing the same thing to “ private museums” in town. How about a $75,000 dollar a year required payment for private museums? Every private museum would be treated the same way- no exceptions!

How about you focus on the town where YOU live and stop opining on what people who actually reside in Westport should do, think, have, elect, bill for, plan, etc?

Dan, this is Nancy in a new form. Please make it stop.

06880 did not write the story. the apology should come from the author of the opinion. everyone in 06880 makes mistakes and has faults.

  4. Corrections are a good thing- even though you (Dan) were not the one who made the incorrect claim. You set the record straight- and didn’t bury it where it would be hard to find. Kudos, Dan!

Dan is doing his best to ride two horses at the same time. The culture warriors that have hijacked the library and the WHS are lined up against the Westporters of true historical standing that are trying to keep their lunches down. I wish him the best but if there were a scoreboard I would say that the culture warriors are close to scoring a total defeat. We’ll see.

  6. This is better news and that path looks really nice. While we’re all in a better mood, I have a small request to make of the Museum: Although I don’t know what policy goal may have been satisfied by denying the Town of Westport’s recent request to access your archives (no explanation was offered) I would like to encourage you to revisit that decision. The preservation of our community’s historic resources is hard enough as it is. Let’s work together.

  7. Clearly, I made a mistake by not careful enough for the path on Avery and as I always own my mistakes, I extend my sincerest apologies to both the Westport Museum of History and Culture, the readers of 06880 and Dan Woog.

    • …by not carefully looking for the path…

Gloria, What a wonderful comment! Actually, I will make a New Year’s Resolution to not make any inflammatory comments about any topic! You will never read another one from me! Also, I’d like to point out that I have a motto, which I have stated a few times, “ Once a Westporter, always a Westporter.” I’m a Westporter. My father was born in 1918, in a farmhouse, on Old Road. We have the house named after my grandparents “The Backiel House” built in 1910. It’s from the Westport Historical Society. I could live in Nepal, but I’m still a Westporter!

Let us ALL be reminded that our words matter & when printed in a public forum, are memorialized forever, and stain our collective psyches like india ink on the fabric of our community.

If in the heat of a moment, we lose our respect for one another, let us endeavor to remember to respect our friend Dan, who provides us with this public bulletin board 24/7, 356 days a year, and relies upon our generosity to do so.

On this, we ALL can agree.

    Yours sincerely,
