“We Need to Talk About Antisemitism.”
To address that fraught topic, several area groups will sponsor a conversation this Thursday (November 30, 7 p.m., The Conservative Synagogue).
Rabbis Jeremy Wiederhorn and Evan Schultz join Rabbi Diana Fersko, whose book “We Need to Talk About Antisemitism” was published this summer. They will discuss the recent rise in antisemitism, and how to address it.
Organizers include The Conservative Synagogue, Temple Israel, Congregation B’nai Israel, Jewish Federation of Greater Fairfield County, and the Jewish Book Council.

Speaking of Israel:
Lily Rimm — “06880”‘s great social media coordinator — and her Staples High School friend Audrey Bunan are planning at walk supporting “our brothers and sisters” in Israel , at the Staples track (Sunday, December 17, noon to 1:30 p.m.)
The base fee for donations is $18, though participants may give as much as they wish. The collection will be made at the event.
Funds will be given to United Hatzalah, whose network of more than 7,000 volunteer medics save thousands of lives each year across Israel, by providing immediate and free medical treatment.

Speaking still of Israel: The Coleman family — longtime Westporters — were downtown yesterday.
They handed out posters of kidnapped Israelis, and asked shoppers to “keep them in your heart.”
Andrew and Relly were joined by visiting daughter Sharon.
“We have so much to be thankful for,” Relly says.
“We were thinking about the hostages, and how each one is an entire world with an individual story of hope and trauma. We wanted to do something to help remind people of them as individual people.”
The response, Relly says, was “overwhelmingly positive and heartwarming.”

Most campaign signs were picked up soon after the election — as required by town regulations.
But a few still linger.

I’m sure the ones still standing were just overlooked.
But it’s been 20 days since the election. Perhaps it’s okay now — though it wasn’t, prior to voting — for citizens to take things into their own hands?

And finally … on this day in 1896, Richard Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra was performed for the first time.
It was decently known before 1968. But then …
Fun fact: When “2001: A Space Odyssey” was released, the future was 33 years away. Now, we’re 22 years — exactly 2/3 — away, on the other end.
(If you haven’t contributed to “06880” since 2001 — or more realistically 2009, when we first began — no problem! You can do so right now. Just click here. And thank you!)

There are not only remaining political yard signs, but others – probably illegal- all over town. Maybe we can outlaw them? From what I understand, political signs are permitted, but only a few “nonprofit” signs are allowed, and not on state property. They are getting worse and more unsightly by the day.
Obviously all the candidates running for office want us to know how much they care about our town while campaigning, to get our votes. Perhaps we should post photos, or keep a tally, of all the remaining signs so if/when these people run again we can know how they REALLY care about Westport?
Unfortunately🙏 Jews are very smart and also creative excellent businessmen in almost every sector and that leads to irrational jealousy. Hard reality to change.
Tom that is blatant stereotype. What is the source of information for your comments ? I know you mean well.
Personal observation. I was born in Manhattan grew up in Queens with Jewish families and competed with them in school scholarships and sports. I spent 10 years in the garment industry and I read the Bell Curve. It’s the culmination of all those factors plus I minored in Theology.
Feel better now?
Hi Tom-
After reading your post I was reminded of the first Law of Holes according to Will Rogers- “If you find yourself in a hole- stop digging!”
I would have said- “Fortunately some Jews are smart and good businessmen (also lawyers, doctors, teachers and accountants) but I would have added- some Jews are dumb and some are terrible businessmen (also lawyers, doctors, teachers and accountant)!”
I agree with you the problem is the irrational jealousy! But why would anyone be jealous of a group with a long history of persecutions, holocausts and pogroms for practicing a religion whose basic tenets are peace (Shalom), justice (Emunah) and healing the world (Tikkum Olam).
I could be jealous of Ilan Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet, Larry Ellison, The Walton Family, The Rockefeller Family, Jamie Dimond etc. All are very rich, smart and excellent businessmen- but I am not! Somehow in the good old USA we think they earned to!
But we live in a world where for too many reality is not what is actually happening- it is in the irrational beliefs of people who only want to see what they want to see.
“I Think We Need to Talk About Antisemitism” is the topic at TCS Thursday 11/30 at 7. It is open to semites, nonsemites and antisemites.
Hopefully, we can all learn something about how to live together without the irrational jealousy .
Jews are plumbers. carpenters. grout people. musicians. FYI most Christmas songs including White Christmas were written by Jews.
