“06880 On The Go”: Downtown Parking

“06880 On The Go” — the man-and-woman-in-the-street video series pioneered by spring intern Colin Morgeson — is back.

Andrew Brennan takes over this summer. A rising junior and classical studies major at Hamilton College, he writes for the campus newspaper The Spectator, and the campus magazine The Continental. The Pierrepont School graduate also plays on Hamilton’s ultimate frisbee team.

The other day, he headed downtown to gather some thoughts on Westport’s parking dilemma. Here’s what he found:

Common sense comments prevail. DPIC needs to reevaluate their entire approach and listen to the constituents and merchants who make downtown the special place it is.

I have openly outloud said it before and will say again.

If you are conscientious of the environment, cannot handle traffic well, do not have a license, and support public transportation, it is available, there are bike stations, and new sidewalks to walk on.

Parker Harding: repave, keep the cut through to help alleviate traffic and provide options for drivers to avoid and get around. Improve drainage by inspecting and rebuilding basins/pipes if needed. Keep as is, however, the trash compactor/recycling bin should be addressed because it’s constantly overflowing and unfortunately, is subject to flooding.

We have 400 units being built/coming in the next couple of years, people want to drive and/or own a car and like the independence, options should be provided and be fair to all with little to no obstructions or force.

The town is growing, taking away spots and the cut through was 2019, when population and enrollment was decreasing. Time for new thought and new plan!

Write to the RTM, write to your selectwomen, write to DPIC, write here! Be heard.
