A picture of a rock as an “06880” Photo Challenge?
Sure. Particularly if it’s historic, and well known — at least, to some Westporters.
Last week’s image showed a typical New England flat-top stone. (Click here to see.)
But it was not random. The “tar rock” is found off Compo Road South, where signal fires were lit in 1777 to warn Danbury that the British were coming (after their landing at Compo Beach) — and call militia to fight.
Today, it sits on the property of — appropriately — 9 Tar Rock Road.
The rock is one of Westport’s most famous sites. It’s on a private road, so most residents never see it.
But Arthur Hayes, Morley Boyd, Pat Saviano, Andrew Colabella, Dave Eason and Bob Weingarten all knew where last week’s Photo Challenge was.
And — more importantly — what it means.
This week’s challenge involves classic cars. If you know where in Westport you’d see these, click “Comments” below.

Part of Rive Bistro’s larger collection of restored French classics,
occasionally rotated into the parking spaces.
The red one is a classic (‘60s) Citroën 2CV (“deux chevaux” (“two horses”)).
Its (way, way)pre-E.U. french tag is at least period correct (the “RL”) for the sixties,
and the “29” indicated that it was first registered in the Finistère Department of France
(the westernmost tip of France on the Brittany peninsula).
As far as the silver-blue Citroën DS on the right,
its enclosed headlights make it later, likely late ’60s or ’70s.
I do not recognize its tag as being French or period correct.
Always worth a drive-by to see what’s on display,
or of course for a river-side meal!
Rive Bistro. I knew the answer as we enjoy the food, the setting, and the cars. But please note that when I clicked on Comments, I could see my neighbors’ responses. Robin ( Robin Jaffee Frank)

Wow–thought I would be “first” with Rive Bistro—but appears they have a lot of great clients! After a lovely diner on the river.
