Good photo. I like the way the clouds emphasize the tree branches. But I have never understood those buildings. What is the point of having the ends rise up higher than the roof?
An attempt at Dutch architecture?
About 30 years ago, there was a big kerfuffle about these buildings. There were four decaying prefabs on the site. Tauck Tours, which owned it, came before the Zoning Board of Appeals, of which I was a member, with an application to construct a 40,000 SF building. Zoning regulations permitted a maximum of 10,000 SF. We turned them down, feeling that 40,000 SF would be too massive.
Immediately, there was an uproar on both sides. Leading citizens came before the ZBA stating how much the Taucks had contributed to Westport, and what wonderful citizens they were.
I even received a death threat!
Not too long after, Tauck submitted an application for four buildings of 10,000 SF each. It was voted in unanimously. And there they stand today, beautifully welcoming visitors and residents to Westport.
