Westport is many things to many people. For those with disabilities — physical or intellectual — it’s a place with possibilities and opportunities.
And challenges.
Stacie Curran and Sharuna Mahesh have been active in the local disabilities community — and the larger Westport community — for years. They are strong advocates for the educational, recreational and social needs of people of all ages.
The other day at the Westport Library, we talked about their work, and our town. What do we do well here, for people with mobility or cognitive differences? What needs work? What are the resources? What else is needed? What are the success stories, and what are the misconceptions and myths?
Click below for our conversation. It’s insightful, fascinating — and very important.

Amazing Stacie and Sharuna! Brava!! Thank you for all you do for this community! You are true Heroes xo
Sharuna and Stacie are true treasures in this town! Families in Westport have their support and our kids feel celebrated for what makes them stand out. It is REMARKABLE to see how their combined mission in creating social and employment opportunities for people with challenges/disabilities has so positively impacted our community. Expanding these efforts to meet current and future needs creates endless opportunities for community involvement and a brighter future for all Westporters!
Such incredible mothers and role models for all of us! Dylan Curran has been a legend and a good friend to so many of our kids over the years. His kindness and appreciation of life is clearly from being raised by such a caring family and truly loved by all that meet him. Keep up the great work!
These two women are doing amazing work! And a special thanks to Stacie for being my right hand on the Challenger baseball
team. She’s always tremendously busy but always makes time to help me create special experiences for the players. Great podcast, Dan—insightful questions and thoughtful answers!
Westport is SO lucky to have these two women, and others working together with them, tirelessly working to create incredible opportunities for adults with disabilities. The need for employment and social opportunities is indisputable, and they are making it all happen!!! I’m proud to be a part of a town that is supporting and embracing this progress. Not all heroes wear capes!
An amazing interview! Stacie and Sharuna answered Dan’s thoughtful questions so effectively. If you’re a human being, please listen to this podcast!
