David Squires had his last-ever Westport Pizzeria slice(s) today. After 51 years, the beloved restaurant closes tomorrow.

Soon, this was all that was left. But, David says, “After I took the photo, I ate the crumbs. RIP: Rest in Pizza.” (Photos/David Squires)
Wah! I’ll be in town next week, but not sure there is any reason to go downtown
Dave. Thanks for the pics!
Stopped in there yesterday for a slice and to wish Mel well. As I was sitting there I realized that five generations of the Eason family had eaten their pizza. That’s pretty cool.
Yes, that is very cool indeed.

Like most of us, I grew up with Westport Pizzeria – at almost 50 I have had more Westport Pizza than pizza from anywhere else and I moved in twenty years ago. When I would return for holidays, my first stop was always WP. Then they moved om 2014, and the pizza changed. I don’t know if it was intentional because of health concerns, but it was no longer the oily, hard to pick up slice with the tip bending down. They never seemed to have an accurate answer as to why. First, I was told it was the new ovens, then it was that the dough is sitting out longer, then ingredients changes. WP became THE pizzeria in Westport for generations because it was so good and different than the traditional dry firm crusted pizza you can find anywhere. I wish they just worked the recipe to accommodate any ingredients that were no longer available, or the ovens, or whatever “reason” they gave, if so I’m sure people would have been lining up to buy the place and keep it going if Mel wanted that. The pizza was still good, just not the same. The brothers and staff have always been the best and they will be missed very much and its sad that another Westport fixture is gone. They will be missed.
