What Up Westport? Help Out Bridgeport!

One of the most thriving online communities — besides “06880,” of course –is What Up Westport.

That Facebook group is a meeting ground for questions, tip-trading and all-around help.

But What Up? reaches beyond our borders too.

Tomorrow — for the 3rd year in a row — the virtual community members sponsor a townwide collection of actual goods, for real people in true need.

Actually, it’s 3 different drives in one.

Puzzles, board games, arts and crafts, Legos, socks, picture frames, wallets — those are the gifts that will go to underprivileged, and often under-served, families in Bridgeport.

At the same time, there is a collection of non-perishable items for a food bank in desperate need, also in Bridgeport.

Diapers, baby shampoo, baby lotion and bottles will also be collected, for women in safe houses.

It’s a 3-fer — and a win-win-win.

The collection takes place Sunday (November 16) between 12 noon and 1:30 p.m. at the Westport Library upper parking lot, next to the Levitt Pavilion.

See you there!

Lots of gifts needed tomorrow.

  1. Jersey Mikes sub shops (in Westport, Fairfield, Wilton, Norwalk) are collecting coats for families in Bridgeport on 11/23 & 11/24 as well. Coats will be distributed by LifeBridge’s Community Closet. Each person who donates a coat will receive a free sub!

Thank you for posting, Dan! The toys Dan mentioned will go to the Ralphola Taylor Community Center Holiday Store in Bridgeport. We are collecting gifts for kids to give their moms, dads, and siblings. We are especially in need of gifts for moms and dads, such as ear buds, toiletry kits, perfume, jewelry ,etc. Kids earn points throughout the year then turn them in for play money, which they use to “buy” gifts for their family. For most of the children, these will be the only gifts they are able to give. The Westport Young Woman’s League is supplying gifts from a wish list for each of the 100 children at the Center. But we need the community’s help to stock the “store.” Thank you in advance for helping bring some magic to kids this holiday season.

  3. The phrase “What up?” is listed as “Urban slang.” Why, in the name of logic, would a Westport posting use that slogan?

    • Sir, in answer to your question. we at what up westport™ believe in one people, and eschew distinctions between urban and suburban. We gladly welcome you into our fold!

      • Though “one people” may be a fine belief, that one people should speak correct English because to do less, to speak Ebonics or Urban Slang is demeaning to that one people.

        • As are you, considering you don’t use the Queen’s English. I’m curious if you have as much irrational fear of Canadian or Australian English let alone American English.

The fact of the matter is there is no “correct” English, only you judging others by the way they speak.

          • That’s nonsense,Mr. Janssen…of course there is correct and there is incorrect English usage, as you learned in school.
To compare Ebonics and slang to Canadian(French) , Australian or any other “foreign” language is simply silly on it’s face; as silly, in fact, as claiming that there is no “correct” English speech…it does not have to be the “Queens English,” Mr. Janssen, but it should be the best we can each muster and, surely, neither Ebonics or urban slang reaches that threshhold.

            • Once again, you’ve made a hypocritical mockery of the language you claim to champion with your overuse of commas and run-on sentences. Perhaps it is you in need of an education, particularly in the fluid and evolving nature of language itself.

        • Peter Gambaccini

Man, why don’t you just simmer down? Good Lord.

          • Despite my grammatical insufficiency, Mr. Janssen, I have not fallen to the depth of Ebonic or urban slang usage.

  4. Dan- thank you for the plug. The out pouring of support, kindness and generosity was mind blowing. If it had only been 10 degrees warmer, it would have been perfect.

  5. Can you attach a link to the FB page What Up Westport. I searched for a page or group with that name and nothing exists. Is the exact group name What Up Westport”
