High Tide On Canal Road

It happens like clockwork.

It rains. The tide is high. Canal Road floods.

It’s not unusual. It’s life on Saugatuck Shores.

But just imagine if this were a full — not a new — moon.

    Does this seem to be happening more often than say 30 years ago?

      Nope. This is normal.
      30 years ago same thing would happen. I had friends that used to live on Swallow Ln which is on the corner of Harbor and Canal Rd. We had to schedule visits around the mean high tides or heavy rain storms with high tide. The homeowners had to make sure to move their vehicles to higher ground.
      Actually, quite a few of the properties down there back in the late ’80s and early ’90s started raising part of their yards so they could park their vehicle higher up before they started jacking up the houses.

      YES! Not higher, but more often. In 20 years, we haven’t seen so many over-the-road high tides as in the last month or two.

        Oh really? I’m sorry, Gene I didn’t realize. Wow…
        I bet the storms have moved the sand around and silted up the bottom of the harbors. So now the water is higher during heavy rain storms and high tide cycles.

    Well…..actually, the New Moon can bring as high or higher tides as a Full Moon.

    My tide chart has this high tide at 8.63 feet, which is super, super high. A normal high is around 7 feet. Tomorrow ‘s “Spring Tide” is forecast to be even higher, then dropping by more than a foot on Tuesday. – Chris Woods

    I wonder if Westport’s OTHER canal road is flooded today. Canal Street, connecting the Kingshighway Bridge and the former Crossroads Hardware, used to flood easily.

      So did Richmondville Ave but they put in new drainage and it no longer turns into a lake.

    Residents of Saugatuck Shores you might need to dredge the canal and just past the new bridge to give yourselves a bit more buffer room. It has silted up over the past years. Now your road is flooded more often.
