We Are The Champions. And The Champions, Champions, Champions, Champions, Champions, Champions.

I don’t normally post “lineup” photos: people in a row, smiling at the camera.

And I hate running pictures where the heads are so small you can hardly see who’s who.

But it’s not every day a school has 7 state championship teams in one year.

So — in honor of today’s Town Hall reception for Staples High School’s field hockey, boys cross country, boys squash, boys tennis, girls tennis, boys volleyball, and baseball teams: Here you go!

Sorry — I did not get left-to-right IDs for everyone.

Congratulations to all! What a incredible achievement!

  2. Seven, holy cow! Is that a school record? I think we had unprecedented success at Staples our senior year—1970-71—with three state championships: soccer, girls’ track, and boys’ tennis. But obviously seven is far more impressive. Congrats to all the team members and coaches.

PS I think all of the state titles back in 1970-71 happened in the largest school category. I am certain that the (still) CT record of five consecutive state titles in soccer from 1969 through 1973 were all in the largest school category.

Congratulations to all. A remarkable achievement. I love that the picture is taken on the steps of Bedford Elementary. O.K. I know it is City Hall but……once upon a time……

    Congratulations Wreckers!

  5. Great story Dan. Congrats to our wonderful Staples Athletes!

What about the boys freshman rugby state champs?

    • Carl, I think that might be due to the fact that it was solely freshman competition (and also because I don’t think rugby is a varsity sport that the CIAC holds an official state tourney in. Actually, I don’t think squash is a sport that the CIAC holds an official state tourney in either, so maybe the frosh competition was the primary reason here).
