Photo Challenge #175

Once upon a time, there was open space in Westport.

Gradually, throughout the first 70 or so years of the 20th century, it disappeared. Farmland gave way to houses. Trees were cut down to make roads. Fortunately, a few spots were preserved as, well, “preserves.”

These days, it’s hard to find undeveloped land anywhere in town.

But not impossible.

There are 10 or 12 acres on Clapboard Hill, between South Morningside and South Turkey Hill. It’s called the Kowalsky property. And though from time to time you’ll see “For Sale” signs there, it’s still a throwback to an earlier Westport.

The property — specifically, a curious-looking tree stump in the middle of it — was the subject of last week’s photo challenge. Hailey Nusbaum, Susan Ellis, Elaine Marino, Wendy Cusick, Andrew Colabella, Judith Brown and Shirlee Gordon all correctly identified it. (Wendy, of course, added important background details.) Click here to see the photo, and all the guesses.

As for this week’s photo challenge: Yeah, we know it’s a men’s room.

But where? The answer will astonish you. (NOTE: Photographer Alan Phillips is pretty sure that the women’s room looks similarly nice. Without, of course, the urinals.)

I have never been in this men’s room but I am going to guess that it is located inside a large high-end women’s fashion store on Main Street. (After all, you did say we would be astonished!)

Compo Beach Restrooms! Tried it out yesterday 🙂
There is also a great cold water bottle filling station across from the Men’s room door.

Now Dan …. how would I know?! 😉

  6. These are indeed the new restrooms at Compo Beach — next to Joey’s. They are a spectacular improvement over the (very) old ones. Apparently they’ve gotten good use — and great reports — already.

Compo Beach, new men’s room. Much brighter, seems smaller. Perhaps the women’s room was enlarged?

  9. Thank you Parks and Rec – great improvement!

THE COMPO BEACH SOUTHSIDE MENS BATHROOMS!!! FINALLY! In all their clean and fresh paint and grout smell, with new drains and better ventilation.

This should’ve been done over a decade ago! And the complaints I made to P&R even as a town employee seasonally for 9 years, it finally happened.

    • Thanks, Andrew. But not really “southside” — that’s where the NEW bathrooms are going to go, right?

      • Andrew Colabella

Ah just saw this, southside will be new building and facilities and these are east beach, my navigation skills are fried along with everything else from studying budgetary process 😂

    It’s the new Compo bathrooms!
