Julia Marino Snowboards To Korea

The Winter Olympics just got a bit more interesting for Westport.

Westport resident Julia Marino will represent the US — and us — next month in PyeongChang. The 20-year-old nailed down one of 4 spots on the air and slopestyle snowboard team.

Julia has come on strong, medaling in 3 of the 5 Olympic qualifying meets. Her performance at the Toyota Grand Prix in California solidified her status — and confirmed her as a top contender in Korea.

Julia Marino, on NBC Sports.

Julia began snowboarding only 6 years ago. Her first national notice came in February 2016, at a World Cup stop at Fenway Park. Since then she’s won gold, silver and bronze at the X Games.

Julia’s parents — and a dozen other relatives and friends — will cheer her on in PyeongChang.

The rest of us will be watching very closely, half a world away.

Go Jules!!!! Watching her in big air is amazing, she flies.

She also comes out and plays softball with her dad’s friends. She’s a great athlete all around and a nice person too.

Here’s to her bringing back hardware.

  2. Awesome Julia!

Way to go Julia! Our whole family will be gathered around the TV here in Westport rooting like crazy for you. Elaine and John, what an amazing experience ahead for the whole family! So proud of the Julia we first met on the soccer fields a decade ago, an impressive athlete even way back then. Go Julia!

  4. This is great news. Could you fill us in on what her connection to Westport is?

    • Hah! My bad. She’s a Westport resident. I’ll update the story now to include that info, which I neglected the first time around. Thanks!

  5. Evan: Julia Marino is my daughter. My husband John and I moved to Westport with Julia when she was eight months old. We have lived on Sturges Highway for nearly 20 years.

Dan: Thank you so much for this!

    Elaine

    • Elaine- congratulations!!! Best wishes to Julia and may the whole family have a spectacular adventure!!!!

  6. I’ve been following Julia ever since she stormed onto the scene at Fenway in 2016 – Westport proud, go Julia!

We appreciate the kind wishes from our fellow Westporters. Thank you!

From what we understand, NBC will broadcast live from Pyeongchang. Julia will compete in two events: Big Air and Slopestyle. Due to the 14-hour time difference, Julia will compete in the mornings in South Korea, but East Coast residents (Eastern Standard Time) will watch the event in the evening:

    Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle Qualifications:
    In Korea: Feb 11 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. EST: Feb 10 8:00 pm – midnight

    Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle Final:
    In Korea: Feb 12 10:00 am – 11:45 am EST: Feb 11 8:00 pm – 9:45 pm

    Women’s Big Air Qualifications:
    In Korea: Feb 19 9:30 am – 12: 30 pm EST: Feb 18 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm

    Women’s Big Air Final:
    In Korea: Feb 23 9:45 am – 11:15 am EST: Feb 22 7:45 pm – 9:15 pm

Cut to the chase: If she makes the finals, plan to tune in to NBC on Sunday, February 11, at 8:00 pm and on Thursday, February 22, at 7:45 pm.

From what I understand, News12CT will show a feature about about Julia between 2:30 pm – 5:00 pm today.

We are so excited for Julia!!!! She is an amazing athlete and inspiration to all. I am still so thankful to her, John and Cece for taking time out of their vacation in Beaver Creek last year to have lunch with my family. My kids look up to her … especially my 12 year old daughter who loves snowboarding… Jules is an amazing role model! We are so excited to cheer her on!
