James Comey, The Bible, The Buddha And Westport

Yesterday, James Comey joined 800 million other Instagram users.

Perhaps it was a coincidence — he may have finally gotten around to unpacking all those boxes, following the sale of his Greens Farms home and being fired as FBI director — but his first-ever post got a lot more attention than most people’s cats or restaurant meals.

Shortly after Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to (whoa!) the FBI, Comey — who snagged the pretty-obvious-but-apparently-untaken username “Comey” — posted a just-subtle-enough biblical verse: “But let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”

He illustrated it with a lovely photo of an ever-flowing stream.

It quickly racked up over 21,000 likes.

However, it was his 2nd — and so far, final — photo that makes this an “06880”-worthy story.

Two hours ago, Comey posted this shot:

It’s a scene every Westporter is familiar with — and loves.

So does Comey. His caption: “Beautiful Long Island Sound from Westport, CT. To paraphrase the Buddha — Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun; the moon; and the truth.”

It’s already gotten over 8,000 likes.

Many of his Instagram followers agree with his message.

But whatever your politics, “06880” readers agree: This “Comey” guy knows a beautiful sunset when he sees one.‬

WOW! On so many levels. Perhaps he misses Westport.

  2. Sharon Paulsen

    Love it!!!!

  3. I thought “06880” readers were vehemently anti-James Comey. Now he’s okay ’cause of the pic? Shallow waters.

    • Nancy, “06880” readers have lots of different opinions, about lots of different things. Like many of us, he is a complex person. His place in history won’t be clear until decades from now. I’m not sure how 2 comments from readers make it clear to you that he is “okay ’cause of the pic,” but then again you seldom make sense.

      • Dan, the idea that James Comey is now “okay” came from the gist of your post, not the 2 comments.

Your perspective is so smart & helpful, ie.., Leave it to an independent journalist, functioning as a blog like yourself, to say what most media should be saying.

Re what’s happening out of Washington, DC, It’s not possible to weigh and place it all determinatively yet, not for – as you said – decades.

Your blog gets better and better.

        Happy Holidays!

Sorry to spoil your ideas Nancy. By the way, you might think about the old saying, Don’t judge a book by its cover. There is another one my mother used to drill into us: “If you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all.”

      • Amen.

      • We always seem to misunderstand each other, Mary.
What I mean is “great players, better people”.

Perhaps Nancy’s idea of “nice” is unique to her?

        • Maybe if I had succumbed and used emoji in the past, I wouldn’t be considered “naughty”. Anyway, I stick by the opinion that the majority of past comments re Comey have been negative. I still believe he was only doing his job.

          • Eric William Buchroeder SHS '70

He may have been doing his job but in addition he encroached into Loretta Lynch’s job. The only rational explanation I can find is that she delegated her prosecutorial role to him instead of an assistant attorney general.. That makes Comey her victim.

    Amen on all counts counselor.

  6. The photos are beautiful and the accompanying quotes for each photo are even more so…Christmas is a beautiful time of year. (As is Channuka, Kwanza and any and all celebrations this month!)

  7. Mary Anne Liesner

    This is good.

  8. He is on Twitter also. It reads: “Formerly @FormerBu, past FBI Director, current husband and father, writing and speaking about ethical leadership, taller and funnier in person.” Has a book coming out in 2018.

Let’s hope that the beautiful sunset in Mr. Comey’s picture becomes a metaphor for the end of the pervasive corruption of “public servants” on both sides of the aisle in the USA.

    • Russell Gontar

Sorry, but the corruption on one side in particular is light years worse than the other. Guess which one.

      • Eric William Buchroeder SHS '70

Maybe, maybe not as all the facts have not yet come to light. A better guess would be that you missed the point of my comment in your zeal to turn anything neutral into a partisan statement. You’re far from alone in that regard.

        • Russell Gontar

You’re right about that all the facts have not come to light yet. But you were incorrect to suggest that there is pervasive corruption on “both sides”. Perhaps you also share DJT’s belief that there were “fine people” on both sides in Charlottesville. Perhaps you are the zealot.

          • Eric William Buchroeder SHS '70

When you can’t rebut change the point. It fools no one.

            • Russell Gontar

Okay. Here’s a little corruption for you. Why is it that Trump, Sessions, Kushner, Flynn, Paige, etc…failed to mention or lied about their Russia contacts and meetings? Refute that.

  10. Looking forward to James Comey’s book, and thinking the subtitle should read “damned if I did, damned if I didn’t do my job”.

    • Eric William Buchroeder SHS '70

Depending on your point of view, he either did a great job or failed at doing what his job is. A simple job description by his employer should resolve the issue. But wait!!!! Job descriptions and accountability for results only exist in the private sector. The “I” in FBI is where the job begins and ends, at least it did prior to Mr. Comey.

  11. It’s getting repetitious. This thread is closed to comments.
