The Westport Police Department has added details about this morning’s bus accident at Weston Road and Cross Highway.
There was minor damage to both the bus and the car. Both drivers stopped.
The driver of the car spoke to the driver, then drove his child to Bedford Middle School.
He did not leave any information or paperwork at the scene. However, he followed up afterward by calling police headquarters.
So no, it’s not a “hit-and-run” as originally reported. However, by not following what the police call “proper procedures,” the driver caused a bit of alarm.
Thanks for the follow-up. Good reporting.
What about the kids on the bus who, presumably, unlike the driver’s son did NOT get to school on time as the driver waited for the police to arrive–which is the legal protocol?
Also, a “bit of alarm” is an understatement for any parent who got that email and whose kid takes that bus.
I’d like to know how it is possible that the people in charge sent out this immediate informational email with obviously incorrect information. Did the bus driver not notice he/she had a conversation with the driver? …or just happened to not mention it to the school and police officials who arrived at the scene?! Very weird.
Of course none of the children on the bus were wearing seatbelts because there aren’t any! Time to force the bus companies to invest in childrens’ safety instead of their own bottom line.
I agree about the seat belts. I’ve never understood why school busses don’t have them.
School busses don’t have seat belts because (a) school busses are already 40x safer than cars, (b) seat belts can’t be fit for the full range of 1st to 12th graders. Been studied extensively by NHTSA

Wilton has had lap-shoulder belts on all of their buses since 2012.
what kind of driver has a hit-and-run with a SCHOOL BUS?!
Drivers on their cell phones.
Just this morning on Roseville Rd a car drove past my children’s school bus after the Stop sign and arm were extended. This happens on a far more regular basis than it should! I couldn’t catch the license plate but I hope the bus driver did! As rushed as people seem to be in this town they need to slow down and respect our children’s safety.
You don’t understand. The sociopaths driving past a stopped school bus are off to do really important stuff. The children on the school bus are, well, just children. How important can they be?
