Hawkes — who appears in the Staples yearbook only during freshman year, in 2008 — was on the Indian Tree golf course in Arvada. Witnesses saw 4 bolts of lightning and 2 men huddling under a tree during the fast-moving storm, which caught golfers by surprise.

A woman with lifeguard training applied CPR, but to no avail.

According to CBS Channel 4 in Denver, this was the 15th death in the US from lightning this year, but the 1st in Colorado.

Simply awful to read this! How fortunate others of us have been during such storms, myself included! So sorry for Peter and his family!

My deepest condolences to Peter’s family and friends. My kids knew him when they were children. I am very sad to hear about his passing.

Peter Hawkes played lacrosse on a team I coached, and was kind, quiet, and a total gentleman giant. I knew his father for years and admired him very much for his business skills, and was honored to coach Peter. I am shaken and sorry, as is my son Alex who played with Peter. A great young man. On the occasions when he triumphed on the field his grin of victory lit up the energy on the whole team, and made my life so much better.
