Oh My 06880 — Photo Challenge #21

Yet again, I’m impressed by the sharp eyes (and memories) of “06880” readers. It took only a few minutes for Andy Yemma to nail last week’s photo challenge: the old, rusted Westport Rotary Club sign on Wilton Road, near Exit 41.

Wendy Cusick and Amy Ancel followed quickly. To see the photo and all guesses and comments, click here.

This is a holiday weekend, so here’s an easy one. If you think you know where in Westport this is, click “Comments.” And add a story about it, if you wish.

    Hi,

If I have announcements and press releases and event notices for a new nonprofit based herein Westport can I send them to you?

  6. Happy to look at anything you have. However, there must be a VERY strong hook/angle, beyond simply “new nonprofit based in Westport.” I don’t run press releases or event notices; I look for the story behind the story. Not having been in Westport since 1972, I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s part of a sign for a plaza. 🙂

    The Library!

  15. New viewing plaza at Staples.

  16. Greens Farms Plaza!

  17. Nail Plaza

  18. Sandy Soennichsen

At the construction entrance to the Plaza Hotel being built on Baron’s South, and only catering to Westporters.

  19. I thought this was an easy one! Andrea Cross has the only correct answer so far: “Arnold Bernhard Plaza,” which is the name of the upper parking lot for the Westport Library. You can see the sign right as you drive in (assuming you survive all the axle-jolting hills, now that the landfill has settled a bit).

  20. Never considered a parking lot as a plaza. I see, though, that he has an actual library named after him in Hamden.

Arnold Bernhard was the founder of ValueLine and a generous contributor to the library capital campaign in the 1980s. His son followed suit in 1998 by naming the audiovisual center for his mother.

  22. My father was the Chair of that capital campaign, and, using his Madison Avenue advertising background, found creative ‘naming opportunities’ for the ‘new’ Library…Arnold Bernhard Plaza among them…
